In my freshman year, in a JV game against Wheaton, I hit a Wheaton player at the whistle. Two Crusaders looked at me, and one said to the other "Let it go, God is on our side."  I swear that is true. And that's when I realized the NCC-Wheaton rivalry was more than just football.

That's impossible!  He's not on their side, he's coaching at Wesleyan, just ask him!    ;D

CardinalAlum, you've got the humor today.  With the "Sheldon Harris" bit and now this.  Very good stuff!

<bowing> Thank you, thank you.  Tell your friends!  8)

Mat,

When you try and not take things too serious, you tend to look at them in a humorous light.   :)

Ugh, finally made it back to the board.  Thanks Pat!! ;)

It sounds like the Norm Eash debate is almost ready to bubble over to the surface.  I'm sure devildog, fightintitan and I will have something to say about that in the coming weeks.

As for rivalries, when I played (2001-2004) the rivalry seemed to be always brewing between IWU and Augie.  No matter how good or bad each team was that year, I dont' think the score was more than a touchdown difference.  (As a side note, IWU went 0-4 against Augie in my stretch, which does hurt a little bit)

And yes, fightintitan, i have returned to the board and I do remember the JV national championship in 2001.  It will NEVER be duplicated!  8)

In football, North Central's big rival is Wheaton for local and political reasons that extend beyond the school.

And while this is definitely true in a long term historical sense for us, in football one of our biggest rivals is also definitely Augustana. It was probably hard to retain the intensity of the little brass bell game during the years that we just won it over and over and over...

It's interesting how rivalries can sorta translate from sport to sport. The football team has been an awesomely emphatic supporter of the basketball team during home games in recent years... so they get all riled up for the Augie basketball game... in some recent  years the crowd was definitely more crazy for this game than any other school. The fact that we've had some pretty fantastic games with Augie in recent years helps that perception.

Are you sure you don't mean that the Wesleyan fans think he's coaching for Wesleyan?  :P  :D

Redman04-- I know the Carthage website says the series (with Elmhurst) is 33-19-1.  The Elmhurst 2006 program has the series at 34-19-1... either way  I know Carthage leads the series.  The series was heavily in favor of Carthage in the late 60's and 70's (Art Keller's dominance), got tighter in the 80's when Tom Beck had the Bluejays at the top with Augie, but in the 90's and 2000's Carthage has gone on an 11-2 run and has bridged the gap considerably.
Talked to Coach Journell this morning.  Without naming names and positions, I can tell you that there are some changes and "shuffling of the cards" to accomodate for Kudyba's injury.

Elmhurst non-conference opponents are going to stay put for at least the next 4 years.  They have contracts with Benedictine, Chicago (another 4 years) and Olivet (2006 being game 1 of 4).
Going back in history, Elmhurst has played Concordia-Chicago, Aurora, Lake Forest (even after they left the CCIW), and Alma.

CardinalAlum-- as tempting as it is to chime in with some comments, given my position (as the EC play-by-play and Alumni Cabinet Member), I have to watch what I say and do.  :D

I said it before and will say it again, that coaches, administrators, and players walk a dangerous tightrope posting on this board.  I didn't start posting on the board until I was 2-3 years post-playing.  I liked and played for Coach Jones,  but we saw what happened when Coach started hanging out on this board.  The Bluejays had a poor season (in terms of wins) and Coach Jones was let go.

On a happier, brighter, and more "to the point" discussion,  I look forward to a successful weekend for the CCIW this week.

I know that in football when I played (2001-2004), we rivaled IWU because their coach at the time (I dont know if he is still there) would say terrible things about our program. He would say that we have terrible facilities (which is crazy we have one of if not the best) and that our coaches do not know how to coach and a recruit is wasting his time if he comes to Carthage. So every year we would try and get an extra little pop on someone at the end of a play, when we played IWU (legal of course  ;D) I dont know if that stands anymore with the Redmen but I would say the team we wanted to beat the most was IWU.

I played in college the same years.  Where did you play in high school?  I have a strange feeling i played you before college...

Jaybird- I assume the shuffling of the cards is on the offensive side of the ball. I thought the back-up QB's played pretty well filling in. I hope they don,t change things to much.

79jaybird

Comet14-- Yes.  The Elmhurst defense is pretty much set.... I mean all 11 starters are solid ballplayers.  The shuffling was on offense and (as you will see on Sat.)  there will be some names in different slots.  ;D

I can't wait for the game. If I remember I will stick my head in the booth and introduce myself. We sat right by the door for the home opener and I forgot.

TitanBacker-

I played at Crystal Lake Central High School from 1997-2000. We had a terrible team when I was there to say the least. I won 4 games in all of my 4 years of playing there (1 win fresh. year, 1 win soph., 2 wins Jr., and 0 wins my senior year). It doesnt help when Crystal Lake has 3 high schools and 3 teams but McHenry has 2 high schools but only 1 powerhouse team. Sorry a little high school rant.

GO REDMEN this weekend! Send that Cali team back to their warm weather hurting  :-X

I know this is a little late, but....FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!

Maybe you two (coach whatever your name is who can't keep your mouth shut and Card Alum) should meet at the bikeracks....say 3:15pm?  I'll bring the juice boxes and the orange slices.

During my NCC days, (late 90's)...we always had an extra special hatred of Augie, IWU, and Carthage.

Augie because we hadn't beaten them since Reagan

IWU because they had whooped us pretty badly a few years in a row

and Carthage because (now i'm just giving my opinion and the overall opinion of NCC players, lets not get into a chest pounding match...) they always seemed to take some cheap shots and play a little dirtier than others.  I have a game that i'm thinking of in '99 (i think) that I will go into more detail about should this discussion become heated.
