The Vikings controlled the game from start to finish. I don't have the stats, but they will be forthcoming on the North Park website.  The Vikings led 13-0 at the half and were up 27-0 late when Eureka managed their only score their only touchdown in unusual fashion.  North Park was ready to punt from about their own 25, but the snap went over the punter's head by a good 4 feet.  He chased it down to about the 2 yard line, hit a 20-yard punt on the run, and it looked like the ball was going to go out of bounds at about the 22.  Out of nowhere raced a Eureka player, who scooped up the ball and ran in for a touchdown.  The Vikings answered with a long drive for a TD with seconds remaining.

First-year player Shelby Wood started at QB with Justin Schwan at running back (not a typo).  Later on Schwan came in at QB and engineered a few nice drives.  Wood went back for other series and displayed a strong arm.  The Vikings' running game looked stronger than it has in the past, and kicker Jesse Reyes knocked through two field goals and four extra points -- when was the last time a Viking kicker had that kind of a day?

Eureka came to play and managed a few nice offensive series, but they were stopped many times by some timely Viking D.  The odd call of the game was in the 2nd quarter when the Red Devils were punting from about their 20, 4th and long, and they tried a fake which netted them 10 yards but turned the ball over.

RedmenFB44 and Washdupcard-

I'm another fellow FVC member and played from 1997-2000.  I played at Grayslake Community (the Rams).  We weren't really that great and yes, 79jaybird, it is like feast or famine in that conference.  Also, i believe CG is ranked #1 in 7A right now.

Sounds like IWU got beat pretty good. Any specifics on the game fightintitan?

Also, RedmenFB44, i know one of your wins came against GCHS your junior year because I missed the tackle in overtime.  I keep having to relive it over and over when i go home and see friends. >:(  Were you the ball carrier?  If so, that would be more than mildly upsetting.  Too bad we both played offense in college.

TitanBacker, from what I listened to the game it was one of those "the score didn't reflect the game" type of games.  I'm not saying IWU should have won, their offense didn't do much at all.  Only one of MSJ's td's, however, came off a sustained drive, which was the opening drive of the 2nd half.  Their 1st td came at the end of the first half off a halfback pass that put them inside the 5 then they scored.  The 3rd td was an INT return for a TD and the 4th was a special teams TD.  I think we fumbled a snap and they recovered and scored.  I might be wrong on that last TD as I wasn't listening very closely, but I do remember it was on special teams.  According to how the announcers described since I wasn't at the game, sounded like the D showed up decently well, but the O didn't do anything.

Heading to the Trinity-Redlands game here in San Antonio tonight.  Should be interesting as I haven't seen an SCAC game yet.  Trinity has been in the playoffs the last 5 years or so, but got upset last week by Texas Lutheran.  Interested to see some "Texas football."
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

fightintitan

devildog beat me to it.   I only caught the very end of the game, but like he said, sounded like we were hanging real tough for the first half and gave up a late TD to end the half, then three quick scores to start the second and any wind we had in our sails was dead and we just couldn't claw back into the game
Things are never as good as they seem and things are never as bad as they seem.

RedmenFB44

TitanBacker-

Yes I remember that game my Jr. year it was one of our very few wins that we celebrated like we had just won a championship. No I was not the running back that scored the winning TD in overtime. I scored a TD earlier in that game but I was out in overtime with nasty calf cramps. Maybe I will have to find that film and watch that game again. Didnt you guys have a really good season one year? Or maybe that was a year or two later.

Its nice to see some Fox Valley Alumni in here

Also... Congrats to the REDMEN and the other CCIW winners today!

devildog... could you do me a favor and tell me what you think of redlands in comparison to the CCIW top half teams? It'll help in my decision of the relative strength of this silly conference I find myself in now. :)

The WONC halftime was absolutely freeking ridiculous... who argues about the state of the cubs and potential managers during a d3college football game?

1) first half stats
2) general game anlysis
3) other CCIW scores from the day
4) current non-conference records and Pool C chances of the CCIW schools
5) ncc standings in the top 25
6) other important d3 games nationally today
7) halftime interview with a player or coach taped the day before
8 ) other recent Cards game results in other sports....
9) heck, even college or professional football game scores from the day....

there are so, sooooo many other options.

When the studio finally put it back to the poor guys at the game they tried to get a few stats in and just did have the time to do a good of a job as they wanted to, and made first half anaylsis comments during the beginning minutes of the second half.

Incidentally, the Cards scored again in the first half to close 28-0... and then they DID AN ONSIDE KICK ??? which they recovered. It was pretty funny, cause it was basically like they were practicing for future games before the first half even ended.... bust still... ouch... way to rub it in.   :P :D

The score is currently 35-0 NCC with like 10 left in the 3Q.

I'm sure usee will cover things between now and then.

But the summary:
Andy Studebaker is an absolute stud.  If he stays healthy, he will be the best DE in Wheaton history.  He was going against a 6'5" 290lb tackle and he was man-handling him.  One time it looked like a Reggie White bull-rush back into the QB.

Pete Ittersagen - amazing.

Defense over all great.

Jeremy Chupp stats make it look like he had a great game, but 2 of his TD's could/should have been interceptions.  Made some real poor decisions, IMO.  I wish Wheaton could run the ball just a bit more effectively.

After seeing Zach Ullrich play... I have more confidence in him as QB.  Chupp's poor decisions on some throws work out fine against the Washinton U.'s, but will not against Augie, NCC, Carthage, etc...

Still another strong game to get ready for the conference schedule.

Mugsy,

right on cue....I agree on studabaker and iitersagen but more on them in a minute.

I could not disagree more strongly with your assessment of chupp/ullrich. I thought chupp was excellent today. he made plays. he did make 2 poor decisions (the int on the screen pass, and the ball that was tipped for a td). his other 4 td passes were all on the money. the corner route he through to the tight end for a td was an awesome throw. the td he threw to  kemper was on the money while he took a shot in the jaw. and the other corner route he threw to the te on the wheaton sideline was an awesome throw (and catch). i thought he had great command of the offense, made many plays with his feet as well and executed extremely well.  in my opinion chupp was the mvp today for wheaton's offense

Hey, April, I don't know what you're talking about. The Cubs are in contention and all. :)

studabaker is a special player in my view. we will see what he does over the course of the year but he was dominant today and last week v albion. we will see if he can maintain this level of play.

iittersagen is also a dominant player. he is really fast and aggressive. his int for a td was incredible.

the wheaton defense is really athletic and their speed is really impressive. they have a chance to be dominant. right now they did what they should have done against inferior opponents. we will see how they play on the road and against tough cciw opponents in the next few weeks.

congrats to all CCIW teams that posted victories today.  Looks like Wheaton, Carthage, and NC  are all off to and/or blitzed their way to big W's.
Very sloppy, turnover plagued game at Elmhurst today. Elmhurst came out a little "out of sync" which I had a feeling they might b/c of their bye week.  Must be tough the get psyched up for the season, play and win big in game 1, then have to wait 2 weeks for your second game.  Oh well.
Chicago opened up with a 10 point lead mostly due to turnovers and some inconsistent play (really from both teams).
Elmhurst made it 10-3 at the half.  Elmhurst scores 23 unanswered points and wins 23-10.  Totally different team, and mindset from EC in the second half.
I give a lot a credit to Chicago who came out firing and trying to upset the favored Jays.  The Maroons were sensing upset, and came out inspired.
Some big keys to the game,  John Scardullo, Brian Keaton, Patrick Ambriz and the EC defense came put the clamps on Rinklin (Chi's QB) in the 2nd half.
Other big key,  Elmhurst's special teams and in particular, their punting game.  Geoff Steele had some pivotal punts that helped with field position.  Especially when Elmhurst found themselves trailing 10-0.
Streaks/ streaks broken

Streaks-  Elmhurst runs their non-conference winning streak to 12 games.  Last loss was 2002 When Chicago beat EC 46-40
Elmhurst improves to 4-1 all time and 4 in a row against UC
Chicago's 6 game winning streak is snapped, and their 6 game streak of holding opponents to 10 pts or less is snapped.
On to the Wolverine state to take on the Comets next week.

Wow, had to leave after 3 quarters.  BU is horrible!  They finally were moving the ball against the 3rd or 4th stringers of NCC.  They had a chance to score early from the 1 and got stuffed twice.  I really like this frosh RB, Sulo.  Runs hard.  April, I agree with you on the onside kick  ???.  What was that?  They were up 28-0 with like 20-some seconds left in the half.  It made no sense, because if it fails they have a short field to try to get one in before the half.  Oh well.  I can't believe I picked Whittier.  I must have been half asleep making that pick.  Kniss was already out of the game midway thru the 3rd.  That might affect the bonus question!

Mugs, no I didn't play football at Wheaton.  The last time I had pads on was in 7th grade in Minneapolis!  My comment about rivalry was based on watching 25+ years of Wheaton football.  You're (probably) right about North Central, but the rivalry isn't always so apparent to the fans.  But given North Central's new competitiveness in football, I'm sure things will heat up.

If we started playing Taylor in football, I think that would quickly become a good series!

I was at the game.  The entire first half seemed pretty balanced.  Niether team could really throw the ball well, and MSJ's running game showed a little spark but not enough to put a full drive together.  MSJ reciever dropped a would-be 70-yard TD pass on the first play of the game, hit his hands and he was about 4 steps behind the defender.  IWU's defense was big and tough, and MSJ's defense straight dominated (as usual - check previous games).  Your assessment of the first TD before the end of the half is correct - halfback pass to Haggard and he was double covered, three guys jumped for the ball and he came down with it.  Then Lovell rushed in from like 5 yards out.

Second half was a new story.  MSJ's offense was hitting short passes and the running game was going for 5 yards at a time.  Lovell scored again at the end of that drive.  Then MSJ's defense and special teams took over with the interception returned and the blocked punt returned for touchdowns.  The fourth quarter featured IWU trying to put drives together only to be stifled by MSJ's D, and MSJ simply running the ball to get the game over with.

IWU's lone score happened when they handed the ball off to some big runningback, he was almost down after about a 5 yard run when somehow he slipped the linebackers tackle, our safety missed, and he ran for a long TD.  Other than that, IWU's offense really didn't seem to stand much of a chance.

We take a lot of pride in our defense at MSJ, but I will say that IWU's O was big, physical, and had what I thought was a talented QB.

Overall, a good game, and a great win for MSJ.
