Man... it is so hard to pick the top 5, because there were so many that preceded my era (Coach Jeff Peltz, etc...) and I'm by no means the best to speak to this topic.

To those I forget to mention, please forgive the oversight, but here is my crack at top 4 DE's at Wheaton since the early 1980's:

Mugsy,

an obvious (and perhaps intentional) omission is Jeff Peltz, current DLine coach at wheaton. although i think i remember he was a 3-4 linebacker, he was in essence a defensive end. it was his record all the others were shooting for (sacks). he has to be in the conversation but its tough since their aren't many stats and only old fashioned film to support this. It would be interesting to see some statistics for some of the folks you mentioned to compare. I think you captured the names i remember as being a force at the DE spot. if you expand to DT a lot of other names come into this picture.

Umm... it was not an intentional omission... in fact I did mention him in my post.  I qualified my list based on the timeframe that I have any direct knowledge about Wheaton football.  Notice I listed my top 4 (which I don't like doing because I might overlook someone and I'm ranking guys I played with) since the early 1980's.

I specifically pointed out Coach Peltz as prior to my era, as I never saw him play, but I am perfectly aware he held every record that could be attributed to a d-line player.

I completely agree he would be in the discussion of top DE in Wheaton history, but I only have input and insight over the past 25 years.

When I get a spare moment, I'll try to cobble together the stats for various DE's over the years.  My dad did the stats for Wheaton for around 15 years, so I have archives of stats somewhere from 1980 to 1994 or so.

My last post was done half asleep and I see I made a mistake with the word I wanted to use, which could spawn some trouble.  :o
"I don't like Coach Journell or the Jays would do"  Should read.....  "I don't THINK Coach Journell or the Jays would do"

I think Coach Journell and Paul Krohn have been god sends for the program and think they have the program heading in the right direction.

I know he was more of an OLB than a DE, but Thane Ritchie was a beast to play against!

Mugsy,

Thanks for the insightful reply.  The only reason I didn't bring up Jeff Peltz either was because I was sticking to the guys you played with or saw as a coach or fan.

But maybe we should start saying at least a couple of bad things about Andy to keep his head from getting too big???  Just kiddin', I know that Coaches Swider, Peltz, and Sandberg won't let that happen.

Go Thunder!

Yeah, I'm thinking the coaching staff will do a good job keep his head on straight, plus his teammates will do so as well.

I'm really hoping he continues to grow and improve as a player, because it will be a ton of fun to watch.

No biggie... it was a verbose response and thus easy to skip over some of my drivel.

79,
I have not seen LaFleur play, but I have seen Ryan play, I think if he keeps up his good play, Kudyba could lose his job next year to Ryan Freund

Just to throw my 2 cents in about Studebaker, some of the other D-line guys that were mentioned had very good linebacking corps behind them.  Chip Parrish, Thane Ritchie, and Mugsy  ;) come to mind.  Although not a bad bunch, Studebaker has not had a stud linebacker to make his job easier.  That makes him impressive to me.  I guess only time will tell, but an excellent start so far.
