Personally, I think this is a big week for Elmhurst.  This is a game that they should win and is a common opponent with IWU.  Could be a good early season predictor of where the 2 teams stand with respect to each other.  Should also be a good test of whomever is playing QB and if the Jays are making the next step of beating who they should beat.

Augie is a mystery at this point to me.  After they destroyed MacMurray it looked like they hadn't lost a step.  But the loss to BW is mysterious, especially in light of the Yellow Jackets loss to Marietta last week.  How Augie reacts after playing hot in week 1 and cold in week 2 and following a week off might point us in the direction this Vikings team is headed.

Comet 14

Both Public Schools where I live added players that upgraded there sports programs because the student wanted to play for that team. The parents moved less than two miles across the river for this perpose only.  There are ways around the boundary issue that makes it very easy for all schools to recruit if they choose. In both cases I am certain that the schools did no recruiting it's just that the student wanted to play for a better team in his sport than the one at his school.

Ah... thanks for snappin' me back into football.  I agree with your assessment on the heightened importance of these two games for Augie & Elmhurst.  I think we can get a better gauge for these 2 teams after this weekend.

I have a brother in-law that lives about 15 minutes from Olivet Michigan and the locals are very high on this years team so I am anxiouse to see the outcome of this weeks match-up. It should be a very good game.

We will also get a good read on Wheaton and NCC this weekend. Washington U may have a pretty good idea of who the better team is. We may be glorifying Wheaton next week .... I think it will be difficult for NCC to match Wheaton's 41 point if only because they managed only 38 points agaisnt Benedictine.

(CBS) WHEATON, Ill. A mumps outbreak at a suburban college was forcing students to take extra precautions Thursday night.

More than a half dozen students at the school have contracted mumps since last week. Several other cases were also being investigated.

Okay Vegas, how does this effect the line on the game?  Do the Dutchmen have a shot?

Wheaton hasn't played Benedictine, so comparing the fact that NCC scored 38 against Benedictine and Wheaton scored 48 against WashU is kinda "apples and oranges" comparison.

Comparing the result of NCC's game against WashU this weekend to Wheatons last weekend will have some different factors involved, Wheaton was at home and NCC will be on the road to name one.

Don't get me wrong... there might be some things we can learn from the result against common opponents.   But I'm not sure how strong a corelation there will be...

I don't think I'll be "glorifying Wheaton next week based on the outcome of the NCC/WashU game.  If for some reason NCC has a dogfight against WashU (which I strongly doubt), then I might feel just a bit more confident in Wheaton status as a contender.

After speaking with a number of students, my understand is that while this is serious and needs to be watched carefully, it was caught quickly and steps have been taken to limit the outbreak.  There was an initial spike in the number of cases, but I don't think it is out of control... nor have I heard anything about it affecting (or infecting  :P) any of the Wheaton football players.

From the Wheaton website:
QuoteTo date (September 20), we have 19 confirmed cases and five under investigation. Of these, twelve have returned to class after completing the required nine-day isolation period. These numbers are subject to change as the situation merits.

Awfully sorry to hear about this Mumps epidemic at Wheaton.  Hopefully everybody infected gets cured and the virus goes away.
I agree that Elmhurst and Augie have a big Saturday coming up, for 2 different reasons.  Elmhurst has their first long road trip in awhile, playing a middle team from a good conference.  IWU has already beat them,  and for positioning purposes,  EC wants to beat them also.  Elmhurst wants to stay on track developing the program into a mid to upper level team. This is one of those hurdles the Jays must jump to get to the likes of Wheaton/Augie/etc.
Augie's game to me is important for momentum heading into conference.  I think the Vikings will beat UWP, but losing to BW was a shocker.  Not so much the loss as how BW just shut down the Augie offense.
From an Elmhurst standpoint, I do wish Carthage would play this weekend, b/c now they can take this weekend off, rest up, get healthy, etc. and get ready for Elmhurst.

Of course they have a shot.  Hope has a terrific program.  I am confident that Wheaton will win, but anything can happen.  I don't think anyone would have said that CUW had a shot against North Central.  We know how that one worked out.  Hopefully that early season loss will help keep the CCIW focused the rest of the way.

This brings up an interesting question.  What's everyone's stance on using the bye week.  I know IWU and Carthage use it but do any other teams in the CCIW?  Is it a good thing to have a week to rest up before the CCIW or will it put your team "out of rhythm"  or cool down a win streak?  I'm curious to see what everyone thinks.

As a player, I liked it if we had injuries that needed to be attended to but disliked it if we had just come off a very successful nonconference game and were riding a high.

Augie normally uses a bye week just as they did this year. They play 2 non-conf games then a bye and then play the final 8 weekends of the year. I feel that it helps them otherwise they probably wouldn't have keep doing the schedule that way. I also like that they don't take the week off before conference play because it keeps them sharp to play their conference opener, instead of having a bye week right before it.  I think the bye week is a good thing overall, I don't know if 10 straight weeks of football is really healthy for anyone (IMO), but Wheaton and recently NCC have shown that 10 weeks in a row doesn't do much harm to the team later in the year.

I would agree it could be an advantage that Carthage has it's bye seperating the conference portion of their schedule from the 3 non-conference games. Even if they are riding high, after 3 games every player has some kind of ache that could use a little time healing. Coaches can take a long hard look at 3 games worth of execution to aid in fine tuning personnel packages and improve performance prior to the start of Conference games.

Wheaton should be able to handle Hope but looks like the Dutchmen have a seriouis DE who was just nasty to Depauw offense according to team of week stats.
by the way Pat how does an IC wide receiver out perform a WC receiver, who you featured on the cover of this week, for team of week honors.  or an offensive line who lost???

To the other discusion on $ I remember I was happy to get 9.5 % GSL's in 81-83 in MI then estatic to get 5% stafford loans when I finished up the last 2 years of my 7 yr. undergrad career at Wheaton.

Wheaton's Defense has impressed me this year and their offense is pretty stacked so I would say they are the team to beat this year.  But unfortunately Augie is not our regular season ending game.   I mean Ohio State and Michigan always play at the end of year usually for Big Ten Title so kinda un/anti climatic to have IWU at end. ;D
