I remember that Elmhurst used to have a drainage sewer at the West end of the field!  If I remember right it was about the 10 yard line or so.

To the Green Weenies, I always hated everything about playing IWU especially at your field.  Part of this is the fact that you waxed us all four years I was there!  If I may what's with that Torch at your field?   ???

Haha!  No one ever liked that marching band music but i enjoyed it every year.  It was better than our band, that's for sure!  :P

Hmm, the torch...  The only way i can explain that change is it was instilled as a tradition to start the torch at the beginning of the game to symbolize a war (on the field).  I guess it sort of harkens back to the days of gladiators and TITANS.  It always kinda worried me to have a open gas line near the field but no problems yet (knock on wood).  fightintitan, DD29-Did i get it right or is there something i'm missing about the torch?

IWU may also be E-W, but it's been a while since I've been there.

IWU's field is a N-S field.  I remember that Elmhurst used to have a drainage sewer at the West end of the field!  If I remember right it was about the 10 yard line or so.

IWU's field is east-west.  I played there and can prove it.  Late afternoon games are sometimes a problem because of the sun setting in late fall.

Titanbacker,

My bad!  ;D  I guess it has been a while and at my old age I just didn't remember it like that!  :-[  + karma for you!

No problem.  It runs perpendicular to Route 51 or Main St. in Bloomington, which is North South.  Plus IWU's field is the fifth oldest in the nation and was at one time used as a baseball and football field.

Speaking of which, does anyone remember playing at North Park when their football field was an extension of the baseball field?  I remember there being a lip where the infield near second base rose up to meet the outfield grass.  It was at about the 35 yard line and made playing on a certain has mark pretty difficult!!  :o

I hate to admit that I played baseball against IWU there when the football field still was partly a baseball field!

There was nothing worse than being covered in sweat and landing in the dirt spots of those infields!

So you remember the Fred Young fieldhouse and all that, CardinalAlum?  Watch out, you may be dating yourself a bit  ;)

In my time at IWU, I actually never heard the story about the background of the torch.  I just assumed it was a tradition they had for a long time and just always did it.  Guess I never really questioned it.  As for the field, yes when I was there it was still used as the baseball field as well, which made for some interesting spacing.  The backstop was only a yard or two off the southwest corner of the endzone, so running those goalline fade patterns that IWU was always pretty well known for (Chris Basaillon, Ryan Tusek, etc.) were awfully difficult to the left side of the west end zone because you could put your receiver right into the fence.

Additionally, my freshman year, we still used Fred Young as our locker room.  We didn't move into Shirk until partway through my freshman season.  Yeah, it was old and had character and all, but it was straight outta Hoosiers (as opposed to Compton).  I've been in better high school locker rooms.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

:-[, Unfortunately, I do.  We used to change in a little tiny locker room off of the side of the fieldhouse.  It was miserable!

I still have scars from 1 of the 2 games I played on NPU's field.  It was brutal prior to their recent improvements.

I hear ya on the visitor locker room (if you want to call it that) at IWU.  That said North Central's wasn't exactly a palace either.  I swear the thermostat was set to 90 degrees to make the visiting team sluggish.  We used to dress for the game and then get out of the locker room asap.

When I was in college we'd dream of playing on grass.  It was concrete and tar and if we were lucky we'd have gravel to cushion the falls.
