CardinalDad,  This year's Elmhurst Senior Class has been by far the most productive, successful, and beneficial for the program since the mid-80's.  While this is a product of the Senior's play on the field, I think you have to give credit to former HC and current AD Paul Krohn and current HC Tom Journell.   Today's Elmhurst FB Team "is not" without the hard efforts by both gentlemen.
Yes, we fell short in a few games (that I felt we could have won all but 1 game)  but assuming we take care of business Sat.  we finish with a winning record 3 of the last 4 seasons.  Like Bob Wiley's Book "Baby Steps" (which movie?  :P )  one must learn to stand up and walk, before he/she can run.
Truth be told though, if you can't start winning these close games in crunch time, then the program won't get to the 7, 8, 9+ win totals.

JB - I have been following the Elmhurst program for a while. I know they have been taking steps. IMO big steps. I really thought they would make some huge waves in the CCIW this year, despite losing a great senior class last year. I knew they had a good nucleous with this year's seniors. That is why  awhile ago, I posted that IMO this was a very disappointing year for Elmhurst. I expected a better year from them. It will be hard to reload losing 18 seniors, some of high caliber. In your opinion, how does it look for next year?

Check out the defense against the run since the loss to Wheaton:

OpponentRushesYardsAverage
Wheaton382476.5
Elmhurst36491.36
Millikin25431.72
Augustana321213.78
Illinois Wesleyan34351.03

That's scary good.  If NCC takes care of business on Saturday (and I don't see why they wouldn't), NCC faithful have really got to like their chances in a rematch against CUW.  This is a very different defense than the one CUW rushed for almost 350 yards against.

Great Stat!  Shuting down the run like that sure makes it a lot harder for your O.  What the happened against the Thunders?  WHat was NCC run D like before the Wheaton game?

I think a lot has to do with the personal NC had on the defense. I went to the home opener against CUW and the homecoming against Elmhurst. The defense I saw at Elmhurst was a complete different defense then what I saw at CUW. At the CUW game the defense looked not so sharp. In the Elmhurst game the d-line used #79 Yena (6'3 350) for short yardage, which plugged up the middle big time (NC has him listed as a OL, the defense must steal him for short yardage). The two ends looked a lot more comfortable and FAST. The linebackers had great reads, also adding the freshman Wenger to the starting line-up was a great decision. The D-Line with Imbordino and Hannon (who have played next to each other (inside) since my senior year three years ago), were very impressive against the blue jays. Bellazzini is always impressive and played a lot better than in the CUW game. I was also impressed with the freshman sulo.
I wish I could have seen the Wheaton game, but I am assured that the defense had made some changes since then. The defense I saw against Elmhurst was great and came a long way since the game I saw in week one. I am looking forward to a possible rematch between NC and WC. And Good-Luck to the Cards who are one game away from getting that monkey off their backs!!!!

Good luck to all the teams this weekend, a little extra to the Redmen.  Hopefully sunday will be a 2 team pick again for the CCIW.
We will always be REDMEN

Story on the front page of D3football.com all week. You should check in on occasion.

A simple "Sunday at 2pm ET." would have been fine.

It was simple. That's why I posted it on the front page. There's news on this site too, you know, not just a message board.

My bad
It's REDMEN not RED MEN

Dont worry Redman!,  I picked up on your Billy Madison Quote.  I would have probably responded the same way if I was in your shoes :)

JB - Having 18 seniors says alot about Elmhurst's football program. NCC has not had nearly that many. Coach Thorne has always said that he needs 20 seniors to be a successful program. 18 sounds like a lot. I'll have to look through the season's programs of all the teams to see how many seniors other CCIW teams have. Interesting...........

I counted 12 seniors on the NCC roster, which seemed low to me considering it was Thorne's second recruiting class. I would think that a decent program would have 20-25 seniors. I imagine a program like NCC or EC brings in about 60 freshmen each year and you want to keep 1/3 of them for all four years for leadership and continuity.

CCIW teams and players have been highlighted and reported on the front page. I think Pat and the people at d3sports.com have done a great job. At the start of the season, I thought Pat said he would have a lesser presence due to a new position he has taken. But I don't see that --- he's everywhere and on top of everything related to D3 Football.

Midwest,
He wasnt commenting about the highlighting and reporting of CCIW teams and players, he was asking about the selection show.  For whats its worth, I think the website has far exceeded most peoples expectations for yet another year and I see no reason for it to slow down

Like Bob Wiley's Book "Baby Steps" (which movie?  :P )  one must learn to stand up and walk, before he/she can run.

Not to be a stickler jaybird  ;), but the book Baby Steps in "What about Bob?" was by Dr. Leo Marvin. Bob Wiley was simply the beneficiary of Dr. Marvin's work, much to Dr. Marvin's chagrin by the way.

Dr. Marvin:  That patient I was telling you about earlier, Bob Wiley.  He committed suicide tonight.

Faye:  That's terrible.

Dr. Marvin:  Oh well, not going to let it ruin my vacation.

[As Bob is tied to the mast of a sailboat wearing an old style PFD (Personal Flotation Device)]  "Dr. Marvin, I'm sailing!!  I'm sailing Dr. Marvin!"

GREAT movie.

Good luck to IWU and all the others this weekend.  I would love to see IWU upset again, but I fear Studebaker will have a career day the way our O line is playing

I hope he has a career day, but I hope the Thunder aren't counting their chickens before they hatch.  Wheaton still needs a win to remain in consideration for the playoffs, especially since St. John's will take up a Pool C slot should they lose this weekend (not likely, but still a possible scenario).

Good point.  As a homer, I'd love to see IWU win.  Ijust have my doubts at McCully and after the momentum from a big Carthage beating.  Yet, I'd also love to watch 2 CCIW teams in the playoffs!

I really don't think that Wesleyan matches up very well up front.  I see Wheaton winning this one going away.

I agree with you on paper CardinalAlum.  However, historically there has been some bad blood between IWU and Wheaton in FB.  Intangibles can make a big difference.  Ruining someone's season can be quite satifying.  Just ask Mugsy about Wheaton defeating Carroll.
