I've been gone all day so I'm late with my response concerning UC Santa Cruz.  But, for those who are fans of the movie Pulp Fiction, you may remember after Vincent Vega (John Travolta) accidentally shoots Marvin in the face in the car and The Wolf (Harvey Keitel) and Jimmie (Quentin Tarantino) have to clean Vincent and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) up, Jimmie outfits Vincent with a stylish t-shirt sporting the logo of the UCSC Banana slugs.

Picture in the link.

Hey everyone!  Thanks for the warm welcome.  I look forward to contributing what little I can and learning all that I can from all of you.  Should be a lot of fun!

The Banana slugs reference brings me a ways (about this time last year, if I am not mistaken...) when there was a bunch of talk about goofy nicknames.  I think they were mentioned during that conversation too.  Can't remember what the start of that converstaion was, though...

Wow you guys are sharp!  I am impressed. I  leave to go do some errands today and I find that you all have responded with the correct school.  I knew it was in CA, and how fitting it is a D-3 school!  Perhaps they will be doing some "sluggin" this year in bball.

Not likely. The Banana Slugs were 8-15 last season, and that was about as good a record as they've had on the hardwood that I can ever remember. UCSC is a soccer school; the Banana Slugs are currently in the Sweet Sixteen in both the men's and women's D3 soccer tournaments.

The UCSC students themselves chose the Banana Slugs nickname and fought for it over the objections of the school's chancellor in 1986. The official school nickname at the time was the Sea Lions. The banana slug (Ariolimax columbianus to you biology majors) is a rather hideous-looking orangish-yellow slug that thrives amidst the redwoods of the West Coast (notably on the UCSC campus itself) and can grow up to ten inches long. As far as I know, UCSC is the only college or university in the United States to have a mollusk (or a hermaphroditic animal) for a mascot. In 1992 Sports Illustrated named the Banana Slugs the best college nickname in America.

They sell Banana Slugs apparel online in their campus store. UCSC Banana Slugs t-shirts are very popular; John Travolta's Vincent Vega character wore one in Pulp Fiction.

Evergreen State, an NAIA school in Olympia, WA is nicknamed the Geoducks (Pronounced Gooey-ducks). A Geoduck is a giant clam. Check out this mascot.

That ain't right.

So there's two institutions of higher learning in the U.S. that have mollusk mascots?

The more you know.  :D

Greg,

How about this one...Matt Groening is an Evergreen State alum!

From what I know of Evergreen State, the school should change its nickname from the Geoducks to the Granola Munchers, or perhaps the Tree Huggers. It's the perfect place to attend school if you like the smell of patchouli and have a suit like Woody Harrelson's that's made out of hemp.
