This summer, met some of the young men from France that played against Illinois Wesleyan during their trip.  Awesome group of young men that represented their country well and expect the same was true of IWU.

The running back was a real jokester.

Didnt know he was the starting running back for the French team and I innocently asked what position he played.  His reply, "Im the holder for extra points and field goals."  I asked him why he had such a large bruise on his forehead and he came back with, "we run the fake field goal every down."

Think its important for the Elmhurst guys to take plenty of T shirts representing their schools program.  One of the best traditions in overseas football is the exchange on mementos following the game.  Give one of the Italians an Elmhurst tshirt and they will in turn give you an Italian tshirt.

This exchange is one of the best grassroots level politics over the big pond since we sent the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to Russia.

Jaybird, contrary to popular belief, the free long distance on your american cell phone seems to work over on the continet.  Was told I would be charged exaggerated fees for using my cell by others, got in a bind where I had to and the charges never appeared.  Made probably a dozen phone calls for about an hours worth of yak and not a charge from Cingular.  Would this accomodate a video feed?

MacLeod,  I will have to ask Elmhurst Station Manager if I could use a cell phone.  In 7 years I have never used a cell phone for broadcast, but if it works this way.. I would be open to trying it out.  I am familiar with the European's tradition of exchanging mementos after the game.  I played Soccer (uh, cough cough yes that "other" sport  :P) up to Freshman year of High School.  We played teams from Germany, Ireland, and Sweden.  We would always exchange team patches after the game.

I thought we had already established that Wheaton has won the bell so many times in recent years that we don't need to look at it to remember what it looks like. ;D

You can use the money you saved on glasses, usee, for some celebration root beer for next year! ;D

I think you've mixed up your informal CCIW nicknames there, chief. Wheaton folks answer to "the Wheaties"; Illinois Wesleyan is the home of "the Weenies".

Interesting Stat I read in the Chicago Tribune.  With Florida winning the Nat'l Championship last night, it is the first time ever that the National Championship Trophy in both football and basketball reside at the same school.  UF won last year's Basketball Championship and now Football.  Whatever those Gators are feasting on, must be working.
Not much new in football talk from Elmhurst. As I'm sure the others are doing the same, most of the coaches are busy "pounding the pavement" for recruits and promoting their respective programs.

"Wheaties"...   ARRGGHHH!!!  >:(
Look at it this way Mugsy, it could be worse, we could be a molding food product made from approximately 50% fat, 25% water, and 25% unidentifiable meat product. :D

Seriously though, Wheaties are the breakfast of Champions. Inherently this suggests suggests that if a team wants to be a champion, they have to try to eat us.... Given how much fiber is in Wheaties, that means that we still manage to pass right through them, for the most part. And given how unpalatable we are, some teams don't even bother to try to eat us. ??? :-X :D :D :D

Hey BrassBell, nice name.....did you notice the halftime score of the basketball game was almost the same as the final score of the football game? (29-19 vs 31-19---Gotta love it Baby!))

Anyway, if you ever care to see the bell again stop on by the football office at Wheaton. you can come anytime, this year, next, the year after, whenever really. It'll just be sitting there where it belongs.

OK ... "Wheaton folks answer to, or get upset by (while acknowledging that it's directed at them), 'the Wheaties'."

Consider the inelegant amendment above a courtesy gesture from one member of the Covie brotherhood to another. ;)

The Cardinals thought the same thing when we traveled to Italy this past summer.  In reality, hardly anyone got t-shirts in return.  Many of us (including myself) gave our t-shirts to the opposing team who, in turn, thanked us and then proceeded to walk off with the shirts!  We didn't mind much and laughed it off because they had t-shirts for sale for 10 Euros a piece, which most of us did end up buying, but don't be surprised if you don't get anything back.  We all had a wonderful time, and I'm sure you will too.

Was still nice to see those IWU shirts walking around.  Made it easier to approach a fellow footballer in a foreign land.  Must admit my position was unenviable as I played the role of the Italians in your scenario.  May have came off as an ugly American at times, but I do my best.  Hopefully you guys werent pitted against the Gladiatori.

Anybody who can't have a good time (and I don't mean in a dirty way) in Europe has some issues.  The beauty, history, and Architecture in (most of) Europe is breathtaking.  If I get a chance, I would love to accompany the Jays to Italy.  I am 50% Italian as it is.
