Hey guys, I haven't been on since the national championship so if this was already posted please forgive.

I was talking to another graduate from NCC and a rumor has it that all of NCC defensive coaching staff has quit. Only defensive cond. Coach Wienke is left and it is said that he was demoted and coach thorne will hire another D-cond. before spring football practice as well as new segment/asst. coaches. Any news on this. Thanks

Shark,

You are partially correct on your information.  There will be a new D-Coordinator.  I can't share his name at this point but it is a great hire for the Cardinals I assure you.   Weinke will be staying on in a different capacity.

In light of the context set by CardinalAlum, I want to make sure to halt all the wild speculation and rumor on who the new D-Coordinator is...

No, I'm not the new D-Coordinator at NCC.

That's odd, how can it be a great hire if it isn't you?  ???

Ah... shucks...

But I'm quite sure we'll hear a myriad of reasons how that can be the case.   :P

Case not closed. The dates don't mean a thing. NPU has been in its present location since 1894, and yet how many Chicagoans are completely unaware of the school's existence? Quite a few, believe me.

(This is shaping up to be one of my all-time-favorite D3sports.com debates: Whether or not a man who has been dead for over two decades was aware of the existence of a future D3 school back when he was in his twenties. :D)
It's only a debate at all because you refuse to admit the facts. ::) There were no I, II, III divisions when Wheaton established their football program.... hopefully, as a HOFer, you are aware of these sorts of things. This means that anyone who aspired to be anyone had to be paying attention to Wheaton Football, since we were the best of the best of the best back in the early 1900s.

Incidentally, while we're at it.... Wheaton was founded in 1860, and Hope College in 1866. Thus, they clearly copied us too.  :P

And, most importantly, as usee pointed out, God made Orange and Blue complimentary colors to each other. Clearly that was because God knew that Wheaton would be founded and come up with the novel and ingenious idea of making their school colors orange and blue since the beginning of time. As God's favorite college before time even began, God decided to shine his favor upon the steps of Blanchard Hall and make Orange and Blue to be on opposite sides of the color wheel so that they would look so darn stunning with each other. This was so that each time a Wheaton player took the field/court, the glory of Orange and Blue would stupefy all Wheaton opponents immediately and that we would accomplish anything we set our minds to. He's foreknowing and insightful and gracious like that.  ;D 8) :D

And now I'm going to wait to be smitten... for real... :-X ;)

This has a lot more to do with the color scheme of bright blue and yellow than you care to admit!! :P :-\

Greg is right on this one. Papa Bear George Halas chose orange and blue because he was a student at U of I in Champaign, IL that has the orange and blue.  Perhaps Halas might have seen Wheaton's colors, but Wheaton College has nothing to do with the origin of the Bears current colors or name.
One might argue then, well home come not Maroon  because U of C was Maroon  and at one time in the Big 10?

On a sad note, there was a story in today's Tribune about some Guilford football players in trouble.  Hopefully that school can recover from this tragedy.

While we are on origins,  does anybody know what the original color/mascot of Elmhurst was?  They weren't always the Bluejays.   In fact we used this as one of our trivia questions during an EC fb broadcast.   The Elmhurst athletic teams were originally Goldenrod!  Yep,  Goldenrod in the 20's.  Not sure when Bluejays became their official Mascot, but thank god we aren't known today as the Elmhurst Goldenrods  :P

Could be much, much, much worse... "Cherubs" was actually one of the 10 finalists for the Wheaton College mascot change when it switched from the Crusaders to the Thunder.  I honestly believe that one was on the finalist list because students and alum code vote on nominations and many did just because it was so horrific.

I would have cut all ties with the school if that one went through.

Someone nominated the mascot "Fighting Bunnies" and it actually made it on to the list on the mascot nomination website. I thought it was so darn funny that I wrote a ridiculous piece on how it echoed the mission of Wheaton and sent it in. :D :D

Seeing how Carthage was the original Illinois State, I guess the ISU of now would have to have taken their colors from us, and then NCC took colors and logo from them.  Using Wheaton logic of course.  I guess you folks in Naperville should be thankfull.

I'm going to have to disagree with you , if you are thinking of the same guy that is rumored, I find it hard to believe that a former quarterback and quarterback coach, with no experience coaching defense will be better then what NCC already had. Wienkie had the #1 defense 2 of the last 3 years. From what I hear Wienkie had no desire to step down. I  am very unsure about this move as well as why all the defensive coaches left.

Quote from: usee on January 24, 2007, 11:39:20 AMso you don't think Halas was aware a local chicago school was playing a basketball exhibition at the 1904 Olympics? I actually think Halas' father and Jonathon Blanchard were close, childhood friends and they loved the color orange so much because it reminded them of the family trips they used to take together in the summers to FLorida where they would pick oranges and sit on the beach. they decided Orange would be a great color for sports teams because of its cheerfulness. Blanchard's mother was an interior designer and counseled them to choose a complimentary dark color to coordinate. An arguement ensued because Halas preferred Black to Blanchard's Navy. The rift resulted in a family feud of sorts such that Blanchard's family had to relocate to the West suburbs where he spent the rest of his childhood prior to founding Wheaton College in 1860 and dubbing its colors Orange and Blue. Halas pretended not to pay attention but paid off University of Illinois officials to make their colors Orange and Black when they began in 1867. When his son attended, he didn't know any better and stole the original wheaton colors for his upstart Decatur team after his graduation.

Those are the facts.

I need an Advil after reading that. ::)

As I've said before, I would've actually sent bribe money to Wheaton if it would've put "Cherubs" over the top in that contest.

The idea of the Wheaton Cherubs facing the Illinois Wesleyan Boy Beauties or the Elmhurst Goldenrods on the field of play is just so ... precious.

It's royal blue and gold, sir, and we don't much cotton to having our colors misidentified (as the NPU banner hanging in King Arena obnoxiously does; our colors are not the same as Augie's, my dear color-blind Wheatie friends). Mock the royal blue and gold, and eight million angry Swedes will ... oh, who are we kidding? Sweden's been neutral for so long that they don't scare anybody. Show me eight million angry Swedes, and I'll show you eight million sullen drunks grumbling into their aquavit glasses. :D

Did you get a good look at Capital WR's running free with nobody in sight?  You can disagree all you want.  This is a great move for the program.  Of course he had no desire to step down, who is ever happy about getting demoted?  He is staying with the program, so obviously there shouldn't be any issues within the staff.  As far as why the other coaches left, there could be any number of reasons.  Other than Schweigardt, the others are part time.   Part time coaches move around all of the time.  If you are Schweigardt, are you going to stay on as a d-3 DB coach or try to advance to something bigger?  And one other thing, the new D-Coordinator had previously been a head coach as well.  He knows the defensive side very well and will bring the pass defense out of the dark ages!
