I'm not making excuses for the incredibly stupid decisions that Rex makes sometimes, but Ron Turner doesn't do him a lot of favors with the play calling.

A prime example last night was when the Bears, trailing by five in the third quarter, had a second and one at about the Colt 35. Instead of giving it to Thomas Jones for the first down or using play-action to take a shot down field (with the option of running on third down if that fails), he puts Jones in motion out of the backfield, eliminating the play-action threat and essentially telling the Colts that a pass was coming. Guess what happens--sack!

Then I think Rex fumbled or was sacked on third down as well. How does a guy lose a gazillion straight games as a college head coach and then get an NFL coordinator job?

Ron Turner was actually a very successful coordinator w the bears before. remember erik kramer, marcus robinson, curtis conway and the rb from Ohio state (harris?). they were a top tier offense back then and kramer was a pro bowl player. he got the illinois job based on that. Turner is actually a very good offensive coordinator (his brother is Norv Turner--a good play caller in his own right). If the bears got rid of ron turner he would have multiple job offers very quickly. the problem is not the play calling.

Ron Turner is part of the problem. Just like it was stated above with the play he called on 2nd and 1. You dont run a play with your running back in motion out of the backfield. You have to run the ball or at least run a play action. Then the D-line knows that they have to pass and they can go all out on Rex (which they did and that lead to the stumble and bumbling of Rex). That killed a drive that was moving well for the Bears. Turner is not a very good offensive coor. He came from U of I. They haven't had a good program for years. We need a guy that comes from a quality program or has proven himself in the NFL. Turner had one good year with Kramer, Robinson, Conway and Harris but other than that nothing. This year the offense was ranked in the middle of the league so I would say the Bears were a great offensive team this year.

Usee, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. While it's certainly not the only problem (I've said Rex makes some incredibly stupid decisions), I definitely think it was a problem. Seventeen rushing attempts against the league's poorest (but, admittedly improved) run defense wasn't what I was looking for either.

Ron Turner is one of the better offensive coordinators in the league. you can disagree all you want but I think if you asked all the NFL coaches, he would be right up there in the rankings. The fact is the Bears offense is not nearly as mature (talent wise) as the Bears defense.

BTW, the stumbling bumbling rex was due to the fact he dropped the snap from center. it had nothing to do with the pass rush. 2nd and 1 is a down you can run a lot of different looks. usually it is a play action, take a shot type down. I think Ron Turner was "taking a shot" on that play. I think the pass rush had a lot more to do with the OLine getting whipped than it did the play call. Ron turner calls a good game. Its tough when you only get 48 plays in the whole game. keep in mind 16 of the 28 passes Rex threw were in the fourth quarter with Indy leading 22-17.

Next year you will see the Bears offense climb the rankings. they will be a top quartile offense I would bet.

Superfoot Wallace

Just as in pitching, when dealing with such a run laden offense, the loss of Cedric Benson eliminated the changeup to Thomas Jones.  Its not who throws hardest or fastest but who can change speeds.

Take one of the Colts running backs away, bench Bob Sanders and Dwight Freeney and the game doesnt look sooo disparate.

Nobody was hating on Rex when he was winning games with big plays in the beginning of the season.  He is short for a quarterback and takes chances.  Brett Favre looks a whole lot better too when he has two tight ends and can boot because the defense has to stud the ends.

Only faults that can be laid at Turners feet are not running the ball with Peterson booting Jones out ala Faulk-Holcombe once Benson went down, and mentoring Kelvin Hayden so well. snap!

Turner "taking a shot" you say? Yeah he took a shot alright and he shot a Bear in the heart. How many NFL owners or GM's do you know? Because you seem to have all this info that Turner would have "multiple job offers" from other NFL teams. The Bears need a new offensive coor. and a new QB. They are both hurting each other right now. So lets get rid of both. I know Rex wont go until after the 2007 season but we will all have to wait I guess. As for Ron, let him go and get someone who know situations in the NFL and has a resume.

I can promise you that I know enough to be confident in making the statements I made.  ;D

The problem is not the coaching.

Just be thankful the Bears don't have Matt Millen as a GM.  My poor Lions are NEVER going to catch a break.  :o

IMHO, Rex is a very unpolished quarterback thanks to his inexperience and plainly let Super Bowl jitters get to him.  Not staying under center and securing the football at the snap (twice) is pretty inexcusable, even in the rain.

I don't mean to be attacking you but in my opinion I think the Bears need a new QB and OC to get over that hump. I am still a little angry at the Bears because I was so jacked for this game and thought they were going to win it. I didn't mean to take it out on you Usee. Sorry about that. We are both Bears fans and that means we are on the same side  ;D

You hit the nail on the head with that 2nd and 1 play.  I nearly choked on my "soda" when it was 2nd and 1 then subsequently 3rd and the next village.
Why would you not try and pound it inside for a first down?  If the Colts were to stuff you on 2nd and 1, then you have 3rd and 1 or 2 and still makeable.
I personally, never liked Grossman either, but over the season I gave him some kudos for his heart, tenacity, and ultimately for helping us get to the Super Bowl.  But gosh, his throwing mechanics are way off.  Throwing off the back foot, some motion problems, etc.  these are things that you correct in high school, fine tune in college, and should not have in the NFL.    Oh well, the game is over and I'm focusing on 2007.  The next football I will be watching is in September when the CCIW opens up and EC is @ IBC.

Here's a nice story about former Bears WR Wendell Davis finishing up his degree at NPU.

I still remember that game where he simultaneously tore up both of his knees against the Eagles on that hideous artificial turf at the Vet in Philadelphia. That was one of the ugliest sights I've ever seen on a televised football game. Glad to see that he's moving forward in his life and doing well.

Now that national college signing day is over.  Anyone hearing words of "commitments" to play at the CCIW schools?  I know IWU puts their commitments up on their website, but I'm not sure when.
