Not to take anything away from sedeska, but he was also a 22 or 23 year old freshman when he first got to Carthage. He had worked a few years after hs and came in as a grown man. Would he have been able to do the same as a true 18 year old freshman?? ::)

He may have come in stronger, but wasn't he away from football for a few years if he was a 22 or 23 year old freshman? I would think it might be a little harder...

I don't think age has as much to do with college athletics as it might high school (as far as being either a man or a boy) Look at the 19 year old DT from Louisville...I would say he's a man and a darn good FB player. Who is probably about to get selected in the top 20 of this years draft...:D

I think all washedupcard was trying to say is try and throw in reasons other than stats for some of your selections.  I don't always know who would make a great addition to the DB list because when I played against a D I rarely if ever blocked a DB, but I can tell you from personal experience some of the better DL's and LB's I played against.

Could next season get here any slower?

I see what your saying. The problem for that is that I graduated just a few years ago and could only tell you players that I've seen and played against since '00 which would leave a list the consisted of players from the past 7 years. I thought maybe I'd do a little research and throw another team out there...

What school?....hey its an open forum we're all just throwin names out there for debate no worries.

The '98 Cardinal D...was a great group.  I still believe that it was one of the top D's in the last 20 yrs of the CCIW.

washdup,

I know you're just stating a belief here, but that's a pretty strong statement when you consider there have been some very good (and several great) defensive teams in the CCIW over the past 20 (or so) years.  When you look at the defensive stats for the 98 Cards, they look pretty good over the course of a season, particularly for a 3-6 team.  That team gave up a total of 244 yards per game and 18.1 points per game.  However, when you look at the teams they played, there were some very weak programs on the schedule (IBC, U of Chicago in non-conf and North Park (2-7) and Elmhurst (3-6) in conf. )and the defense didn't fare very well vs the upper half of the conference.  Against Millikin, Augie, Wheaton and IWU (the top four teams in the CCIW that year), NCC gave up an average of 31.25 points per game.  Based on these stats and playing/watching CCIW teams over the past 25 years, I think it would be hard to make a case for that defense being in the top 10, let alone one of the best.

QuoteI remember a center at Augie, Jon Bothe, who was a beast and was voted Offensive MVP.

usee,

Bothe was a senior during the 88 season and, as you mentioned, he was a beast.  He came to Augie as a tight end, but was converted as a freshman and ended up starting for 4 years.  One interesting thing, he replaced Greg King, who was an All American and probably one of the best O lineman to play at Augie.  Both King and Bothe grew up in Amboy, IL and both were voted Offensive MOP of the CCIW following their senior year.

Augie6,

if you scroll back a few pages you will see the discussiion on the best position players since 1995 in the cciw. My list was hard to make and I am glad it was limited to 1995. if we went back into the 80s it would be mostly Augie players. I remember Greg King well as I do several other very large Augie OLineman from that stretch in the 80's. but to your point about defenses the thing i remember most was the dominant augie defenses of their championship years. Just a dominant stretch of talent and teamwork.

Something I've been talking with folks over on the OAC board concerning admissions of all the kids from National Signing Day.

Check out this article about Clemson:

And this is from the Big 10 comish replying to a Chicago Sun Times add:

Big issue in the scholarship divisions as always.

Should Schools lower thier academic standars to get recruits who don't make the grades?

I've been saying no all wekk over on the OAC...what do you all think?

I bet I have the best squat in school history maybe even conference.  I did reps with 9 and change.  Ask Big Coach and Johnny.

Weren't you also the bacon eating champion??  I remember you were  +9 pieces a plate!!!!  Remember Hitting the Waffle Houses on the way to Panama City Beach!!!!

Redmen04,
Its funny that you mention tons of bacon. Where the old Peg and Lou's once was there is now a bar called The Somers House. Every Monday night they have free bacon and $1 cans. This Monday they went through 20lbs of bacon (I only know because I work security there).  :D

Son of tailgater, is it true that tim "rookie" glidden also works there?? That kid has been around forever!! Ah peg and lous aka Bootleggers!! The good old days. If rookie does work there, ask him if axl is still around!!! ;)

Its a lot easier to give up 31 pts per game to the "top" programs when they are getting the ball on the opposing team's 30 yrd line.  Look at the Cards offensive (being used as both a noun and an adjective) stats for the same year.

I thought you knew the two went hand in hand.  The more bacon you eat the more you squat.  Secret of power lifters.

Titan Q

A few days ago someone forwarded a link to the Fenwick H.S. website to me.  On the frontpage it indicated that QB Brien Rooney has decided to attend Illinois Wesleyan.  The frontpage has since changed, but here is a link to the cached page.

I believe Rooney was the Chicago Catholic League "Offensive Player of the Year."  He was Special Mention all-state on the Chicago Tribune's team.

Brien's father, John (Class of 1984), is IWU's all-time leader in passing yardage (6576) and third all-time in TD's (55).  He won the CCIW's Art Keller Offensive Player of the Year award in 1984.

I've never seen Brien play, but this Brother Rice grad is always happy to see a Catholic Leaguer in the green and white.   I hope he has a great career as a Titan.

Titanwatcher

I have been away from my computer for a few days, so you beat me to the scoop on this Q. Played with his father as a kid and have heard nothing but great things about him. 4.5 speed and an acurate thrower. Nice pick up for the Titans.

Elmhurst is gearing up for a trip to Italy coming in May.  The Bluejays will tour a couple of Italian cities and then play a college football team from Italy.  I am most likely going to accompany them (just need to clear the schedule) and tape the broadcast overseas... then rebroadcast it on Elmhurst's station once we return to America.  Should be a fun trip.
