What is a typical spring practice like at D3 if you are not allowed to practice in helmet and pads.  Is it just conditioning.

I would imagine these days someone that comes to one of the CCIW schools in thier mid-life (30's, 40's, 50's) is doing it purly for educational reasons (we have many in the continuing education programs at NCC weeking M.B.A's and M.A. in Education.  I'm guessing they aren't even thinking about trying out for a sport.

We almost had a guy who walked on at UIllinois think about trying out at NCC when he came back in his mid 20's to get an education certificate (he graduated with a degree in engineering at UI), but he didn't want to put his body through that.  (This was some years ago)

I mean that at some state schools with a lower cost of tuition some one could go back given thier eligibility and walk on to the football team (if my memory serves me correctly some Gulf War vet did that at south carolina in the near past), but thats alot of money to walk on at NCC, Elmhurst, or Wheaton, or IWU.  Plus many of those people that come back work a job while they are doing it and the classes meet in the evening when football practive would usually meet.

There are now NCAA restrictions in place that don't really lend to someone in their 30's or 40's participating in collegiate sports.  It is something like 10 semesters to complete you 4 years of eligibility after your first semester.

Someone like Mr. Sager or Pat will probably jump in here with the specific rule, but you have limited time with which to use your eligibility.  You no longer can comeback for advanced degrees or to complete you undergrad 10 years later and participate in sports.

Mugsy,

Unless that is a VERY recent change, not true.  If you are not enrolled, the clock is not ticking.  The ten semesters could be spread over 30 years.

But no matter who the oldest CCIW player turns out to be, he probably still LOOKS younger than Greg Oden! ;D

Oh come on Oden doesn't look a day over 35!   ;D

Don't you mean Robert Parrish?

I have it on good authority that Oden and the Chief are actually twins.

Note:  I'm only 23 and haven't had a chance to go through all of the aches and pains the "Old Guys" talk about.  ;D :D

Just wait you will.

I'm waiting for that first no pads cut block to hit me, then i think i'll know.  >:(

On a few other notes, IWU alums Tom Kudyba and Chris Hummel are listed on the Bloomington Extreme roster for this spring.  In addition, former IWU lineman Chris Reynolds is starting at center for the Springfield Stallions, who play in the same league as the Chicago Slaughter (mentioned a few pages back).

Yes it is alot of strength and conditioning. Its also a great time for skill positions to work on 7 on 7 and passing trees etc. Timing between QB and RB on hand offs and for returning offensive line to go over blocking schemes and stunt pick ups on passing downs. Lots of footwork.

Its great mental preperation and if guys keep at it over the summer it provides a real boost.  It also helps start getting back into shape after a winter of drinking beer and ordering pizza at 11pm (not that I ever did such a thing).

The rules continue to get tweaked here and there (used to be you couldn't use a ball in D-III spring practice), I wouldn't be surprised if some years from now they allow full contact, not that I advocate it or think it should be part of the DIII experience, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened

Ah yes, the Uncle Pete's midnight pizza run, sure miss those days!!  We were never allowed to use a ball or do anything "football specific".

Don't know if I'll be on this weekend, but just want to wish everybody a Happy Easter this weekend.  Don't eat too many Cadbury Eggs.  :P

There is no such thing as eating too many cadbury eggs...

If only I could find a rabbit that would provide me unlimited quantities of chocolate eggs...I'd be much fatter than I allready am

Been away for some time, but finally got a chance to catch up on my "Post Pattern" reading.

Welcome football2007 and your son to Carthage! If your experience as a parent  is half as wonderful as mine has been with Carthage and Coach Rucks (and his staff) then you'll be in for a great experience. For sure you need to get involved with the Carthage Football Parents Group (CFPG). A great way to meet other Red Men parents and involve yourself in social events/gatherings (tailgating, golf outing, parent flag football game etc...) while helping to raise additional financial funds which aid the Carthage football program. My wife and I have been in charge of football merchandise sales for the CFPG for the entire 4 years our son played. You will be mighty impressed with the quality and quantity of different items available which display your pride and support for Carthage football. Although our son will be graduating this spring, we intend to continue to be around and active for years to come with Carthage football. I can't think of a better way to spend a fall Saturday then watching DIII/CCIW football. In fact we plan to make the trip to Whittier, Calif.  in September. Congrats on your son selecting an outstanding College and best wishes to him as he begins a journey he'll never forget.

My dad tells me he had a conversation with Coach Swider. Coach said he was tired of being CCIW co-champions and plans to fix that. He said for the first time they were going to have spring ball at Wheaton this year. Is that possible? Wheaton doesn't or hasn't had a spring practice schedule up until now? I can hardly imagine that.

Tailgater

In response to football2007's question about The Carthage football team this year..... most has been said that is known. The defense will be solid as always with Coach Etter directing the troops. It will be good to have the leadership of Donovan Moore, Franco Shenault and Mike Powers back on the field after missing the entire 2006 season with injuries. Keep an eye on Moore from punt formation. This is something you have to see to believe. You never know if he intends to punt or not or which foot he may kick with. As long as he remains healthy I would predict there won't be a game where he doesn't pick up a first down on a fake punt.

The offense holds all the questions as to how successful Carthage can be this year. The entire interior line of 5 seniors who started all of the games the last 2 seasons (Glassman for 3 years & Vuturo for 4 years) will need to be replaced. There are a lot of bodies to work with, but little Varsity game experience. The 7 or 8 game JV schedule will prove beneficial as all those fighting for a job on the line have had some form of game experience. The backfield will be another big question. Carthage needs to find both a RB and FB to take the load off of QB O'Boyle. I'm not certain these replacements exist on the current roster so I am hopeful for some good recruits or transfers. Brennan O'Boyle will lead the "O" at QB and has done a fine job his first 2 seasons. Named team offensive MVP last season even though he missed the last 2 games with a knee injury. Scott Danly shows great promise as his back-up and is more than capable of leading the team when called upon. Bryan Bergman returns at TE and will most likely be a main target for O'Boyle.  I project him as a 1st team All-CCIW TE. There are always a number of good receivers, but Eric Haldeman will be the leader of the receiving core. He returns this year after missing most of last season with a thigh muscle injury.

That's about all I know. New Recruit info has kind of been vague depending who you talk to. I do know Carthage will be a force to deal with again this year and I see them continuing to battle as one of the upper tier teams in the CCIW.

Great information Tailgater.  Living in Michigan I have never seen Moore, but from the way that the Carthage faithful talk about him I'd sure like to see him play, especially from punt formation.
