fyi... more on Tom Beck.  He was inducted in 2004 to the College Football Hall of Fame and holds a .724 all-time winning percentage as a coach.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_College_Football_Hall_of_Fame_inductees_(coaches)

I appear to be thinking of some other CCIW coach that went onto Notre Dame, because it wasn't Coach Beck.

Mugsy,

Millikin had a defensive coordinator around 1997-1998 that had played for Neibhur at wittenberg. I think he went on to be a graduate assistant or more at Notre Dame and is now coaching somewhere in the college ranks.

Yeah... but I'm almost 100% sure someone went onto Notre Dame during the late 1980's and it was more than just taking a GA or position coach role.  Now that I've said this... I guess I need to back up my recollection.  I'll get diggin' in the archives...

Getting closer...  ;D

This article has Tom Beck in South Bend!  Only as an inductee to the college football Hall of Fame.   :P :-[

http://www.collegefootball.org/news.php?id=432

Interestingly enough, the all time list of Notre Dame coaches lists a "Tom Beck" in 1991.  The year after Tom Becks last year as a head coach at Grand Valley State.  Hmm...  same Tom Beck or a different one?  The mystery continues...

He did spend one year as an assistant coach at NIU and another as an assistant with the Chicago Blitz (USFL).

Ah HA!!!!!!!

Just found this clip out on the ether:

QuoteWhen Beck left Grand Valley after the 1990 season to become an assistant at Notre Dame, Kelly got his chance to be the head man. He hired Dennis Fitzgerald, a former head coach at Kent State during the tumultous times at the school in the 1970s, as an assistant.

So my recollection wasn't completely accurate, but it wasn't completely bogus either.

I was pretty sure Beck was at ND but there was NO WAY I was backing you up! :P

There has been some talk about a possible trip, but for now Carthage has to fund the trip to Whittier, CA, which I am sure isnt cheap. I know that WIU has made the trip to Europe but I am not sure about any other CCIW teams.

How does fundraising work at Carthage.  Does the team fundraise for this or the school etc.  I was involved in a lot of fundraising for my son's private HS.

I know NPU is doing a ton of fundraising work through a new football alumni group, pretty sure they bought new unis for '07.  they also do a quite a bit of fundraising with the team sellig similar promotional cards or discount coupons.  Athletics are really changing at Foster and Kedzie

One more note regarding the outlandish baseball scores recently from a few pages ago:

QuoteRunning Up the Score Watch: As noted by readers including Matthew Freitas, Bridgewater (Mass.) State beat Newbury College 57-1 in baseball. Bridgewater coach Rick Smith kept his starting pitcher in five innings, though Bridgewater led 31-0 at the end of the third, and played only 17 of his 29 players despite the bench-clearing lead. That is some mighty bad sportsmanship on the part of the Bridgewater baseball staff. Poor sportsmanship does not occur in a vacuum -- usually it reflects lack of character -- so here's a question for the college's president, Dana Mohler-Faria: Does Bridgewater State teach character? The school's sports information office gets a round of boos for putting out a press release boasting about the score -- and waiting until the final sentence to note that Newbury is in its first season of varsity competition. The victor, not the vanquished, should be embarrassed about this game.

Interesting.

There was a rather extensive discussion of this in the Daily Dose.

I thought people were being a little harsh until I read all the facts, I cannot understand a coach who is up 57-1 would not have used every single guy on his roster (unless they were hurt, and even then  ;) )  If you're up big in the 4th quarter you clear the bench (middle of the third depending on the score) its a great time to get your young players some time. I know this is baseball, but how about a couple at-bats for the kid who might not get another chance until he can break into the lineup as a Junior or Senior?

Interesting story about a former player at Carthage, and a school in the typical CCIW recruiting area.  http://www.dailyherald.com/localsports/story.asp?id=308129  According to the Carthage website, Pettenuzo lettered in 78, 80 & 81, which would put him at Carthage when Coach Rucks was playing there.

Lakeshore I agree with you and I noticed it during this past Basketball Season.  With the additions of Paul Breneghan and Scott Pethtel I think NPU is laying the groundwork for success.    I think the wins will soon follow suit.  I will look forward to seeing their new uniforms this year.  I know the Vikings have VIKINGS on their helmets, but I would love to see North Park go back to the white helmets with royal blue face masks and N P U in royal blue again.  That was during the Coach Rucks era.  ;)

I just noticed that Wheaton has scheduled Millikin for our Homecoming next year...

http://www.wheaton.edu/Athletics/football/schedules.htm

How much does it say about Millikin's recent play that we chose the week we play them for Homecoming? Ouch... I still remember when that game was much anticipated for it's excitement. And us losing to them. (2001). That was also the last year they finished above 4-3. It's been a rough 5 years for them, huh?  :-\

It may not say anything. Homecoming is rarely set by the football coach. It's more often set by the alumni office.
