You may see that the Driscoll boys bring the winning traditions they have had to Carthage and Elmhurst!!!!!

For the Elmhurst/Carthage game you will have to add seating in the end zones because so many kids are coming to that game from Driscoll and at our banquet we said they will have to sit between the two teams.  lol

My H.S. coaches kids played at Driscoll...the Franken boys, you know 'em?  The eldest graduated some time ago (prolly 2000-2001 went to Georgetown on a FB scholarship played TE) One of his younger was a QB I think...

The dad is a good coach.  He coaches in the public league and while we didn't win every game (Whitney Young is a Magnet School and only lets good Basketball players in apparently) he was one of the classiest and well prepared coaches in the city.  We only get about 30 kids a year out for Varisty football in a school of 2600...yikes

79jaybird- My son said that they report aug. 11th for football. I don't know if they actually start practice the 11th or just start team meetings for the weekend and practice on Monday the 13th.

August 11th?  Ok.  That is a little earlier than we (my years at EC) reported, but that's good.  Actually that 8/11 date is closer than most think.
Usually the first 1-3 days are filled with meetings, getting organized, building up some team chemistry/good karma with one another, physicals, and such.  Then they slowly work into full gear practice.  We used to call it "Shells" where you had your helmet on, shoulder pads/practice jersey, cleats, and shorts.

From an Elmhurst standpoint, I am glad they are taking the trip to Italy because Chris Kudyba needs to get some action- as well as the receivers and offense getting used to him back in the saddle.  LaFleur and Freund did a nice job, but they won't be the #1 guy come Benedictine.  This trip will allow Kudyba to get the familiar taste of "live action" back in his mouth and be ready for the Fall.

It will be nice for him to get some extra snaps in but half the team is not going and some that are are seniors and not playing next year. So I don't think it helps build to much chemistery yet.

Just noticed on the Carthage schedule in 2008 they play my son's second choice school.  Valparaiso.  Should be interesting since they could not believe he choose a D3 school over a D1AA.  Hope Carthage wins by a landslide!!!!!!!!!

Pat Coleman

Heh, if they didn't believe he chose Carthage over them, guess they need a reality check. Valpo is D-I football in name only. If that.

Comet, as someone who went on one of those European trips with IWU in 1996, I assure you that trip does wonders to chemistry.  Even though only half the team is going, that half is typically the first and second teams, not the third team scout teamers (though I somehow snuck in, not sure how).  If this is Elmhurst's first spring trip, I promise it won't be their last after the experience.  The '96 trip was our first trip, and that fall of '96 was a pretty fun year.  I think we could have competed for the title either way with the talent we had that year, but that trip most certainly went a long way to making sure we took care of business that year.

Ok, Mugsy and April and all the other Wheaties can now get their jabs in about us running it up against the Crusaders that year......... :D  :D
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

Guys,

These Eurpoean trips sound nice.  Are these just tours or do  the teams play football against European teams or other US teams?   Are these full contact?  What are the NCAA DIII rulings on summer games?  Just curious.

Carthage Fan,
I actually had the opportunity to end my football career with North Central's trip to Italy last year.  We had two weeks of full contact padded practice stateside, flew to Italy, toured for about a week, during that week had one padded practice (on a "field" that looked and felt like a slab of concrete), and played one game in Muggia, Italy against a conglomeration of teams.  Most of them were from the Trieste Mustangs, however, several of the players were from Croatia, and about 15 were Americans from a nearby U.S. Airforce base.  It was an unbelievable experience that I wouldn't trade for the world.

The spring trip Wesleyan took to Hamburg was amazing.  It was key to team chemistry, but in the end didn't help us vs. Mt. Union

OK I am new to DIII but I see where regs are OK for games out of the country but what about the full pad contact practice?

This is why these trips are only allowed once every three years. The full contact practices are certainly a necessity for teams playing one of these games, but they're an incredible advantage as well, which is why they're not allowed every year.

yah, it was great.. it was basically like Spring Ball that the DI schools participate in.   You get a chance to work out the kinks before your report in August.   It also helped that IWU had just built the Shirk Center.. they were both huge recruiting tools.. I think they peaked talent-wise in the mid-90s.

79jaybird

This IS Elmhurst first trip (anywhere) and the team is obviously very excited.
Devildog I think you outline it very well, that Spring Trips only unite and build up team chemistry.
The Elmhurst itinerary is the same as some of you have outlined.  They have had a bunch of full padded practices here at EC, they fly to Milan, Italy.  They spent 10-12 days touring and traveling to a bunch of Italian cities.  They have 1 full padded practice in Italy, prior to the game the following day.  Then they fly back to O'Hare the following morning.  Should be a great trip and I am anxious to hear about their experiences upon their return.
