The great thing about the trip we took to Hamburg was that we flew out of O'hare on a Saturday and arrived in Hamburg on a Sunday.  We had a "pregame" walk through practice on that Sunday, then we played on Monday.  This got the game out of the way at the beginning of the trip so that we had the rest of the week to do the tourist stuff after already playing the game.  That way, there wasn't the long break between some full padded practice and the game.  Either way, it's a tremendous experience and can only help any team that takes advantage.  The chemistry you develop in a foreign country is so great because you have to rely on each other when pretty much none of us spoke German.  Also, the team then only has a two and a half month layoff between being in pads as opposed to a year layoff.  It's a great jump start.

Ok, Mugsy and April and all the other Wheaties can now get their jabs in about us running it up against the Crusaders that year......... :D  :D

There is nothing to debate. it is a fact that the team formerly known as Crusaders have taken their pound of flesh for that day many times over.  ;D :o 8) ;)

If you look at individual CCIW Series  I think you can find a **kicking by each team at least once.  Augie might be an exception with some series, but I know looking at Elmhurst through the years,  there have been games where they have kicked butt, and games where their butt's were kicked.
My HS football coach used to tell us, "You never want to rub it in, because there is a good chance that same team can beat you twice as bad the following year... be humble and win/lose with grace."

If I hadn't been in the first half of my sophomore year of high school in 1996, maybe I would. :P

Not that I particularly want to point this out or anything, but we got pretty beaten up in 2001 too. That was my first trip ever to Bloomington, and everything I did is now amusing in retrospect (I parked in this odd, odd, place, and amusingly, all I ever saw of the excellent Shirk Center facility were the restroom until at least two years later :D ). It was definitely not a fun trip, but it wasn't the worst trip I made to Bloomington either... That honor definitely goes to February 28th, 2004. :'(

79jaybird, My son did not go on the trip to Italy but he just talked to a couple friends who just got back last night and Elmhurst won 55-0 is what I think he said. The other team was made up of a lot of a hodge-podge of players some of had not even played before. Is this a normal scenario of what most teams experience? His friend said they had a blast just that the game wasn't much to write home about.

Comet 14,  Glad to hear the Bluejays trip to Italy was succesful, not speaking in terms of winning the game, more importantly the Jays get a chance to experience a foreign nation/culture and build up team karma together.  The game itself is just gravy to the life lasting experience they can always share together.

I am not a good one to ask about the makeup of teams in Europe,  I am sure there are others on this board that can give you a better glimpse of what the roster(s) of foreign players are comprised of.

I have noticed on the various boards that American FB Teams usually dominate vs. European Nations.  Glad the Jays continued this trend.

I noticed that Larry Johnsen retired after 20 seasons coaching football  at Augustana. congrats to him on a fine career. I wish I could say we will miss him.  ;)

Coach Johnsen was a great coach.  He will definitely be missed at Augie I'm sure.  I'm with Usee on this one( :-[), we won't be missing him either!

Hark!  Do I see CardinalAlum agreeing with USee a Wheaton backer???  :o
Larry Johnsen along with Bob Reade sure knew how to run a program and build up a great winning chemistry.  Does anybody know who Augie has to replace him?

Too bad Mugsy never got me one of those stickers like he said he would. :D :P

<Sigh> I knew that would come back to haunt me.  Not that I need my credibility and "my word" knock down another notch or so...

I now have yet another serious mission in front of me... Find ole' Wheaton helmet decals.

CardinalAlum--That will be our "little secret"  ;)

April- I guess I better shine and cherish the Wheaton Helmet I have in my basement.  I have full size helmets of EC, NC, NPU, CUC, WC, Ben, and Car.  I am still waiting from the coaches from MU, AC, and IWU to send me either their helmet/decals.
On the Wheaton helmet I have both the old Wheaton (cursive writing) and the new W  logos.  NC I have the old Cardinal head and the new NC interlock.  On the Elmhurst I have my numbers that I played with (ala Alabama) and the new Bluejay decal, and finally with NPU  I have the new Vikings  under coach Pethtel's regime.
