Speaking of North Central, are they going to scrimmage anyone this year?  Someone had hoped last year that not scrimmaging wouldn't hurt the Cardinals against Concordia in the season opener and it appeared that it did, especially when you consider how North Central dominated in the playoff rematch between the teams.

Any word on any other scrimmages?

I have heard through the grapevine that North Central may be scrimmaging Olivette Nazarene University, an NAIA powerhouse.

How does the NAIA compare to D3?  I've always been under the assumption that the top d3 teams a far ahead of the top NAIA teams... would you, or would most people agree with that?

I was unaware that Olivet is a NAIA powerhouse.  If so, how long have they been so?  And who are other NAIA powerhouses?

NAIA schools that my son was recruited by thought they were more comparable to D2.  Really have no experience myself

there were stats on here last fall showing how D3 did against NAIA the final numbers. I think 2 schools from the WIAC traveled West and did very well, but I do not recall the final tally of D3 against NAIA, but I do seem to recall a D3 school beating a D1-AA

Olivet Nazarene was 4-7 in 2006, 6-6 in 2005.

McKendree (illinois) with former millikin HC Carl Poelker, ottawa univ (kansas) who used to be coached by current wabash HC chris creighton, malone in  ohio, georgetown college in kentucky (home of cincinatti bengals training camp) are a few more

Carthage Fan

I think UW Stout beat William Penn IA (5-6) 25-18 and UWSP beat Waldorf IA (1-8) 45-7.  Olivet is hardly an NAIA powerhouse.  The usual NAIA powerhouses are below:

Street & Smith's NAIA Top 10
1. Saint Francis (Ind.)
2. Sioux Falls (S.D.)
3. Carroll (Mont.)
4. Missouri Valley
5. Saint Xavier (Ill.)
6. Bethel (Tenn.)
7. Northwestern (Iowa)
8. Georgetown (Ky.)
9. St. Ambrose (Iowa)
10. Morningside (Iowa)

We have discussed on here before that many NAIA schools like to compare themselves to DII schools but most comparisons are not warranted.

I saw St. Francis, Ind. play last year. They were good but don't know if they can beat Mount. IMO and experience coaching against D2 and Naia, most of the NAIA schools compare to D3. The list put up by Carthage Fan is a good list of the top programs. They would be comparable to D1AA-Non-Scholarship like Drake,San Diego or Dayton. My son played at Aurora many years ago, when they were independent and they played agains Olivet Naz, Trinty, Taylor, Urbana and IMO they were not as good as the CCIW or D1AA-non-scholarship schools. IMO ,GVSU, last couple of years D2 champions would dominate the top NAIA schools.

They used to be, but they've falling in the rankings the past 5-7 years.  In the late 90's they were really good, I have a couple of friends go there to play football, one got hurt and I havn't heard from the other in a long time.  Its still a pretty good program though from what I've heard, the wins and losses just haven't been as impressive.

That is a smart move by Thorne and the coaching staff I think.  They are a tough team and it will be a tough scrimmage and that is really going to benifit the cardinals going into non-conference.

I've heard also that they will be scrimmaging the FIRST saturday of camp with only two fully padded practices. While ONU will finish their camp with the game. Should be a good feedback on the cardinals new 3-3-5 defense, again this is just what was rumored to me.

Sorry, I did not mean to hype Olivet up.  I just assumed that they were a powerhouse when I saw on their website that they were the NCCAA Victory Bowl champions in 2004 and 2005, as well as being the NAIA National Runners up in 1998.  I don't know how prestigious the Victory Bowl is, and I guess its been almost a decade since they've been successful in the playoffs, I was just going based off of reputation and what I saw on the website.  My apologies.

While it is a nice honor to be chosen for a pre-season award, offering congratulations without any accomplishment rings a little hollow. I hope these guys are all on this team at the end of the season.  :P
