Mr. Ypsi

While it would vary widely from program to program, it surely is not uncommon - their are no binding letters of intent in d3.  And Greg's comment about quality of returning starters is certainly apt - if NPU is really on the rise, they should hope that at least a few of those returning starters get beaten out of a starting job!

Greg, regarding 3-sport stars: I'll retract the 'ever' part if you'll retract the 'common as dirt' dig. ;)  3-sport athletes may have been more common back when Mr. Ypsi shared the Titan campus with mastodons (and the occasional hold-out dinosaur), but 3-sport all-conference selections have never been common.  And if anyone can find a match for Steve Laub's all-around excellence, I'm eager to hear it.

Talking about two-sport athletes, while I was at Wheaton Bart Moseman played both ways in football (DB and WR) and I'm pretty sure he was all-conf at both positions and all-american at one of them.  He also played a couple of years for the basketball team and was a solid player, though not all-american.  Bart wasn't a real physically imposing guy but I'd have to put him on the list of some of the better all-around athletes I knew.  He spent a month or two in training camp with the then-Houston Oilers.

Oh please, don't ever mention the name DeGeorge in association with North Central. He ran the NCC team like a junior high school coach - I'm sorry that's demeaning to junior high school coaches. The joke continued when Augie hired him as an assitant before he finally got out of coaching.

I remember when playing a few years under DeGeorge (the other two under Thorne)  that he would get so damn excited about all of Ryan Jordan's PUNTING records.   I don't think he ever understood that those were not good records to own,   such as

Wheaton vs. Wabash scrimmage on September 1 - at Wheaton.  Should be a great test for both squads...  2 Top 25 teams with high expectations & 4-5 All Americans.

I agree. although I am not sure how much the top 4-5 guys for each will play. it will be a great measuring stick.

Any of the Wabash faithful making the trip?

A little harsh don't you think?

Given the results he produced, probably not ...

Wow.  Wheaton and Wabash...anyone remember that Wheaton/Wabash mud bowl from the early 80s?  Or maybe I already mentioned this last year?

It has been mentioned a few times over the years, typically right around the time of the scrimmage.  My brother played in that game.  Quite the shootout...

Mugsy and Hiker Jim:

That must have been a dandy to watch.  This has been discussed in past years as well, however, a similar "weather bashed" game back about that time (actually late '70's) was the Wabash/Hope game played in a horrendous rainstorm and thunderstorm.  Game was delayed due to the latter for at least 45 minutes and at one point, the rain was so heavy, the weather dark/foggy, players couldn't see past 10 feet - very eerie....and, oh, the mud ::) :o.  Anyway, for sure, those games are great memories.  If you guys go to the W/W scrimmage, I hope you have a great time.  Hopefully see you in Sept. at Wheaton.

A bit...

I played under DeGeorge and he isn't an idiot and he didn't run NCC like a jr high program.

I think the problems with his defensive schemes is that they are way over complicated and instead of key and react there was way too much to think about.

I remember freshman year walking into a room vacated by the defense after a meeting and it looked like the white board was covered with scribbly lines and defensive movement, it was nuts.

He also had a young staff especially at OC and he really wanted our focus to be the running game.  I think we all agree that a more balanced attack would have been best considering the run first, second, and sometimes, third mentality, but we didn't loose to elmhurst or NP under DeGeorge that year so he couldn't have been the worst coach in the CCIW ;)

While the playing experience wasn't great under DeGeorge as far as wins and losses, it was still a generally good experience as a person and player IMHO.

most notable for wabash coach greg carlson chasing the referees off the field after a no call in the end zone on a final pass play that ended the game and the win for the Crusaders. A classic.

North Park's season preview is up:  http://www.northpark.edu/home/PDF/athletics/football/2007seasonpreview.pdf

does anyone recall the last time NPU had 17 returning starters? I think that is great. I really like what Scott Pehtel is doing on Foster Avenue. If he can keep bringing in good numbers and retain them, NPU will be surprising some people very quickly.

I am wondering in D3 how many players do not show up for camp and a coach thinks they are coming.  I noticed a player mentioned on the north park site as a new recruit that has changed his mind.

There are several of the new recruits that decided on NPU over Carthage & North Central for one reason or another.  Beating out conference rivals for recruits is another step in sustaining the turnaround of a program.

NPU will be turning a lot of heads this year. They have a bunch of quilty players coming in to camp this year. I know a few of the guys and they are some pretty good players. In fact i could be suiting up in those new Viking uni's this fall ;). Middle Linebacker from College of Dupage Ramon Lacey 8). Just Watch #33 its looking like a good fit.

Oh Brother!   :o ::)  I thought I had seen it all, but North Park players pounding their chest in the pre-season is a first!
