Oh, things should be very interesting by that first week in October!

What I took from cardinaldad was that there seemed to be no satisfaction in NCC's first CCIW title (or tie for the title) in whatever years. That the players have worked as hard in the offseason as they did last year and the year before and year before. And as hard as they have at Wheaton, At Augie. At Elmhurst. At Carthage. At IWU. At NPU. At Millikin.

Every one is tied for first, and every team thinks they have a shot at finishing first.  Optimism everywhere. And soon, football everywhere.

Well, I always hate the end of summer. But, if there is a good thing about the end of summer is that it  brings the football season and some GREAT CCIW action. Good luck to all teams and hopefully you will have a relatively injury free season.
It's been interesting reading all of your posts for awhile. Interesting predictions, etc. I'm feeling better and better about NCC repeating. It is OBVIOUS that the players have been hitting the weight room and are serious about this season. I predict a very similar finish this year to what we had last year. I don't think any team will run the table. If one does, I'll have to pick NCC, of course. Each year, they get better!!!!!
Again, everyone have a great, safe season.

GO CARDS!!!

Cardinaldad,

So your logic is that because the NCC players were OBVIOUSLY hitting the weight room (showing they are serious about this season of course) they will repeat? Were there no Augie players working out this summer? no Wheaton players? Nobody from Carthage? For sure there couldn't have been any Elmhurst players working as hard as NCC. God forbid North Park players would take this season seriously.  :-*

Suppose for a minute that all the top teams worked out just as hard as every other team. Then what? NCC still the OBVIOUS choice?

I'd make mention of the fact that the NPU football team is simply following in the tradition of their schoolmates who play that other male fall sport in deploying multiple Scandinavians on the roster, but I learned my lesson yesterday about mentioning the "s" word in this room. :D

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.  As a fellow Swede, the chef and I go way back....

Old 40,  The Elmhurst scrimmage timeline is that they will practice from noon to 2 p.m. Then a scrimmage from 5 to 7 p.m. Jaybird I will also be there Friday taking some mental notes (short hand, ha ha). I watched practice Wed as we were moving my daughter in and I had some free time but it was a shell practice only and they did mostly drills. The team did look very into practice despite the heat. I am looking forward to watching the scrimmage I have concernes for both sides of the line and also running back.

True story:

My junior year at North Park, the most popular show on TV was The Muppet Show. The lounge in Burgh Hall was jam-packed every Monday night when The Muppet Show was on, and since this is North Park we're talking about, it was to be expected that everyone's favorite segment of the show was the one with the Swedish Chef.

North Park has a sister school in Sweden, and every spring a dozen or so Swedes from the sister school arrive at Foster & Kedzie to take classes at the Park and soak up some American culture and the Chicago experience. Since I didn't have a roommate at the time, I agreed to accept one of those incoming Swedes as my roommate for spring term. His name was Bengt Arvidsson.

It was the end of Bengt's first full day in America, and I told him to come downstairs with me to the lounge to watch The Muppet Show. He asked me in his heavily-accented English what The Muppet Show was. I just chuckled. I knew we were in for some fun.

The show comes on, and, naturally, when the Swedish Chef makes his appearance everyone in the lounge bursts into laughter. Except for Bengt. He just sits there with this puzzled look on his face, as though he's a ninth-grade algebra student in a room filled with Ph.D.s in lab coats who're making jokes about the zeta function of the Riemann hypothesis. Bengt is absolutely lost. It's every traveler's nightmare -- he's the clueless foreigner, and nobody's helping him out.

When the sketch is over, he finally screws up his courage and says in his distinctive Svensk lilt, "I don't understand, Greg ... what was so funny about that?"

"Well, uh, Bengt, he's called the Swedish Chef, and ... uh ... what you need to know is that that's what Swedish sounds like to American ears ... y'know, that sort of hurndy-burndy-furndy sound."

Now the look on Bengt's face is one of indignation. "That is not what Swedish sounds like!", he sputters.

After striking a thoughtful pose for a moment, he adds, "But it does sound a little like Norwegian."

Usee,
What, on Earth, is your problem?  Here is a guy posting the mere fact that he is excited about the start of the season and his team, and this is what you post back to him?  Tell me: was any reply to that post necessary to begin with?  I've seen many similar posts that you did not have a snappy retort to.  You state: "Suppose for a minute that all the top teams worked out just as hard as every other team. Then what? NCC still the OBVIOUS choice?"  Did Cardinaldad say anything about North Central being the obvious choice to win conference?  To me, it looks like he said; "I predict a very similar finish this year to what we had last year. I don't think any team will run the table."  What he said was obvious was "that the players have been hitting the weight room and are serious about this season."  Did he say anything about other teams not hitting the weight room?  I think not.  Did you not like the fact that he said if ANYONE were to run the conference, his obvious choice would be NCC?  (Imagine that, a dad believing in his son's team...hmmm).  This was a good-natured post with no personal attacks on anyone.  So what warrants such a condescending reply to a post like this?  Usee, I've read this board for 6 years now, 4 as a player and 2 as an alumnus, and from what I've seen, you've been a classy guy.  Your karma of 90 speaks for itself.  So why would you, all of the sudden, turn a complete 180 and blast this guy without any cause to do so?

New Tradition,

First of all a little prozac would be in order for you. I didn't attack anyone. Cardinaldad made a prediction and I (using his own words--"OBVIOUS" in all caps was his words, not mine) tried to flesh out his analysis behind his prediction. Its a pretty consistent theme with me U see. when someone makes a prediction on here its a lot more interesting to hear their logic and get into a football debate than to have them pound their chest and tell us they worked harder than everyone else. guys like cardinal alum will point to NCC's returning Oline and Sulo's success as a freshmen. in the kyle kniss debate we have pondered his adjustment from no playing time at a D1 school and how it translates to NCC. Others will say NCC has a good core of defensive playeers to go with some solid underclassmen. all good, valid debates.

when someone predicts their team will win a conference championship they should support it. They don't have to, but they should if they want people to engage in debate. in his post, his support is that his team is hitting the weight room and taking the season seriously. my post OBVIOUSLY was to draw out the fact that hard work is a constant to compete in this conference and you should have a little more back up than the serious approach of your team to support a claim to the conf title.

of course this is a chat room and we can all come on here and say "my team rules and yours drools" in then we won't have much of a board in my opinion (see IBC board). I come on here to debate the facts.  When that stops happening I for one will move on.

Thanks for that one Dr. Sager. As an old math major, it's been many years since I heard a reference to the Riemann hypothesis ...

That makes those posters pointing to another Kniss being annointed the starter look a little bit more "in the know"......

To lose a starter on the o-line is a big deal.  With both quarterbacks unproven and a running game that is a must to keep the defense honest this could be a problem.  Hopefully for the Naperville school someone is ready to step up.

I agree, I am all for analysis.  However, as an ardent reader of this board, I know that all of the analysis that you mentioned had been discussed, at length, in earlier posts.  There is no sense in coming on here and repeating things that others have already stated.  All Cardinaldad said was that it would be a tight finish and OBVIOUSLY he would have to pick North Central simply because he believes in his team.  I don't understand why you need to rip him up for supporting the Cardinals and believing in them.  New, proper analysis will come once the first scrimmages and games start to happen and we have something new to analyze.  And the Prozac comment was ultra classy, by the way.

Wow... I wasn't going to bring it up for fear of being mocked and made sport of - being a math major myself.  I wasn't sure how many other math geeks are out on the CCIW posts.

I found Dr. Sager's post highly entertaining, being of Swedish heritage and mathematics/computer science "geekdom".

And yes CardinalAlum, I know there are a plethora of ways to mock and make sport of me.

I'm not sure if it is "the best", but as college food goes, Wheaton has outstanding food service.

I looked up on the 2008 Princeton Review best college list.  Wheaton is actually #3 in best food service.  I would give you the link, but you have to register.
