What if they just played Ittersagen at Safety and had 6 down lineman and 4 linebackers...  He could probably cover the two deep halves and flats, right??

FormerCard, he is not Ditka.   ;D

Great point...if i could give karma, I would

I agree with Tailgater on this one.  Let's not forget Kevin Burris in this category (4 Year All-Conference player if I am not mistaken).  Carthage used to be able and line up with teams knowing they were the play was going and they still would have success.  Now with what I am hearing from Carthage faithful is correct switching to the spread offense this will only lower their rushing totals.  And for a team whose strength is their defense, passing all day and not eating up the clock will only make this defense uneffective.  I mean look at Augie's defense the last few years because of how much their offense has been able to eat up the clock and pound it down people's throats their defense has shined.

Thoughts and prayers go out to C.J. Finn, tough break for a great kid.

People do tend to forget how good Burris was.  In those days (the start of the Rucks era) we had half the the talent of most teams we played.  Our offense at the time was pretty tricky to figure out..... Triple option right, triple option left.  That's it, but as coach Boone said (from Remember The Titans).... The Option is like Novocain; just give it time and it works!  And some how we managed to put together 3 consecutive winning seasons on sure toughness rather than talent, Burris was a big part of that.  Personally I think that those are the years were Carthage got it's unfair rep of being a dirty team.

Tailgater, I am an eternal optimist!   ;)

Carthage Fan, I kinda thought that was case. Nothing wrong with projecting positive mental attitude toward our team. I'm hoping and expect this group of talented young men to develop quickly and put my concern to rest. As Mugsy stated, I was curious what you might know or might have seen during the scrimmage that I was missing.

I have short term memory issues and know you posted earlier that you are new to this Board this year. I assume you have a freshmen son on the Carthage roster. Who & what position does he play so I can put him on my radar?

I'm hoping you will be at Saturdays game extra early (3 hrs prior to kick-off is when we start the grills) to take part in the pre-game tailgating ritual. It has become one of my specialties! I'd like to meet you so I can put a face on your post name. I'll be in the practice field area by the red tent near the edge of the parking lot. It has always been a great time laughing, chatting and sharing stories with parents, former players, old alum and usually guests from the opposing team. Hope to see ya.

Mugsy, thanks for taking the time to compile the Wheaton roster physical stats for me. It seems to me, on paper, this is the same good size team as always. I was wondering what my Dad had observed. Many of the starters were projected to return so I thought it strange that the team got smaller. Maybe he was more focused on reserve unit players???

RedmenBigD and Redmen04,
I was unaware of Kevin Burris (1996-1999), my bad. He played just before I began my focus on Carthage. Looking at the historical review I see Kevin still holds the career record for points scored (246) and TDs (40) and indeed he was a first team All-CCIW all 4 years. What a great string of running backs Carthage had from 1996 - 2004.  I won't leave out Jim Jodat (1972-1975) who still holds the CCIW career rushing record with 3,524 yards.

Tailgater

By the way RedmenBigD welcome to the Board! I just noticed you are fairly new to posting here. Can you give me a little Bio on your Carthage history so I can familiarize myself with you? Thanks

+Karma for you for digging out the rushing stats!

Wow some great scrimmage recaps on here!  NPU takes on UChicago Thursday night at 7pm at home.  Its the North/South match up!  I will recap!

Thanks for doing that, Lakeshore. I'd be there myself, but my church softball team's playing in the championship game of the Chicago Covenant Softball League on Thursday evening in River Park, right across the channel from the football field. We're aiming to send our archrivals Winnetka Covenant sobbing all the way back to the north suburbs. ;)

We'll draw a nice crowd of two or three dozen people for our game, but I hope that the football game gets a bigger one. :D

Cardinaldad made a similar statement (rah rah for his team with no supporting info) and usee ripped into him.

Fellow Card fans:

Enough with the Usee stuff, it's old!  Usee is one of the best informed, knowledgable posters on here(What am I saying?? :o)  Differences of opinion are a part of the enjoyment, unless it's a disagreement with my opinion!!

CardAlum,

This post brought a tear to my eye. Thanks.

Quote from: usee on August 25, 2007, 11:10:10 PMalso on defense the expected starting corner opposite ittersagen is not on the team. Geoff Burns.

Geoff Burns is a little, uh, otherwise occupied these days. I don't think you'll be seeing him in a Wheaton football uniform anytime soon. In fact, I don't think that you'll be seeing him in much of anything.

Wheaton's in a tizzy over this. It apparently made the front page of the student newspaper.

This may be one of the strangest stories involving CCIW football that I've ever heard.

Geoff Burns is definately the best looking corner in all of D3.

Well, it's been nice knowing all of you.  The world must be coming to an end if Mugsy and CardinalAlum just agreed.

Ah, Jim Jodat.

I'm surprised, well maybe not, that Jodat hardly gets a mention any more. Most of you are probably too young.  ;) I think the phrase then was "Whodat Jodat." I never played against him (missed by a year) but did see him on film. Very impressive.

Then, he played for a few years with the Los Angeles Rams.
