tms,

usee gave a report on the Wheaton-Wabash scrimmage longer than some term papers I've received (just kidding, usee ;D - actually, alas, I'm not :().  I'm sure he was dead serious!

Personally, I'd like to hear an NCC update, as well (especially since they rose from #18 to #15 without even 'playing')!

although half of cardinal nation is probably offended I asked for info I was in fact serious.

I am just shocked the MadSwede has graced the room with his annual post.

Hey all...congrats to the CCIW teams that came away with victories...

Jaybird: Great to see you at the EC vs BU game and congrats to the Bluejays on the win.

I attended the Benedictine vs Elmhurst game (well the first 3 quarters) and Elmhurst looked very solid throughout easily beating the Eagles 52-3 (could have scored more, but the Elmhurst coaches really took the opportunity to play alot of kids, goo move early in the year with the deal sealed early in the third).

A personal story: I sat next to two grandparents of a freshman DB from Elmhurst.  Thier grandson was playing his first college game and they didn't know much about the CCIW, DIII football, or what kind of team Elmhurst had.  They were a little nervous about how big Benedictine was during warmups. (Benedictine warmed up all 115 of thier players while Elmhurst brought on special teams first for warmups)  I told them they shouldn't have much to worry about and that the big'uns from EC would be on the field shortly.  They relaxed and we talked a bit.  I told them what school I was from and they asked me who I thought would win the game.  I said "Well Benedictine is supposed to be a much better team, this is the most players they've had in a long time, but I still think Elmhurst will crush them."  The Grandfather chuckled a bit, but near the end of the second quarter with EC up 28-0 they both turned to me and said "Well I guess you were right..."  I still love the fact that the atmosphere in a D-III stadium is mostly a family one, the proudest and most invested fans of DIII.

Game Notes:

I was a little surprised that Benedictine played so poorly.  They were not only overmatched talent wise, but also in terms of fundamentals.  They didn't block or tackle well throughout most of the game.  They couldn't run the ball or stop anything EC did on offense.  Joe Cooper has alot to work on in Lilse.

Things that impressed me about EC:
I saw three QB's for EC do very well.  Kudyba 7 and Lafluer 10 (SP?) both played very well and made some crisp passes.  Kudyba is back folks and he looked very good in terms of making good reads and putting the ball in his recivers hands.  It wasn't like BU laid down for this, but EC really was on traget making the decent coverage seem bad.  I would say he looked a bit crisper than #10, but #10 ran the ball well and calmed down after he got into the tempo of the game. #13 also played in the 3rd quarter and looked decent albeit with most of the first string lineman in there protecting.

Both the running backs that got some carries #30 and #28 looked good in traffic and moving the pile, #30 especially.  He went out with an injury during the game (not sure on his status for next week).  The line looked very good on the Left side. LT, LG, and C played a very good game and BU had a couple decent DL (undersized but good motors).  I was not as impressed with the right side, especially the starting RT.  He gave up two sacks in a row in the 3rd quarter.

The defense looked good.  They played well all game and didn't allow a first down in the first quarter and I think the 1st first down in the 2nd quarter came as a result of a penalty.  They played the starters at LB and DB until I left after Maple picked off a pass and took it for 6.  Something that really impressed me was that they rotated thier DL very effectivly playing 8-10 guys in there at different times.  They tore the BU OL apart.  No where to run, no time to pass.  That is going to be key for them going through the CCIW schedule: depth in the trenches.

Thats really about it for me.

While this is the DII board:
How about Appalachia State beating Michigan? Thats awesome. But AS has won two national titles in 1AA the past two years...who at Michigan decided that was an easy tune up game...

Mr. Ypsi

Nobody on the Michigan staff viewed this as a 'patsy' - when d1A added the 12th game, UM tried everyone (and had one team accept then back out).  This was the best game they could get.  Alas, I'm sure the players viewed it as a 'patsy' until it was too late.

While UM should have won, and it was an upset (replay it 10 times, and UM wins 8 or 9 of them), the talk of 'greatest upset of all time' shows ignorance and contempt for the 'lower' divisions.  I don't know if ASU has the depth to compete successfully week-in-and-week-out in d1A (though the 63 vs. 85 scholarships is overblown - how much do the 64th thru 85th scholarship players really contribute?), but their starters would beat MOST d1A teams.  Just as Grand Valley would beat a great majority of d1AA teams, and Mount Union would beat a great many d2 teams - there is a helluva lot more overlap in divisions then casual fans (and most sportswriters, who SHOULD know better) seem to realize.

Mr. Ypsi, who lives 8 miles from the 'Big House', will now dismount the soapbox. ;D

I was surprised to see that the running game looked pretty good. Nice job of hard running by Jake Smith (fr) and Andy Bures (Jr. transfer RB) The offensive line did a sufficient job up front to help move the offense.
;D  I think the running game will only get better.

I agree, too many penalties.

See you Saturday.

I agree, too many penalties.  Of concern is "Brennan O'Boyle, who did not play in the second half due to injury"  http://www.d3football.com/releases.php?release=328&scoreboard&year=2007  Let's hope this isn't serious.  DeBeuf did a nice job in relief.

See you Saturday.

I think that Jake Smith will be a good back for Carthage, He was a very good high school player (hopefully Billy Pilgrim will not want to debate that for pages and pages, because I don't happen to have stats from Fremd High School 2005-2006).  Did he come in for mop up time or did he play through out the game?
Also Penalties, when where they committed?  Agreed that it is too many, but if a bulk came in the 4th quarter it is not as much of a concern.

Also, got my copy of the Carthaginian the other day.  (For those of you who don't know it is an alumni newspaper of sorts that comes out 4 times a year gives updates on the goings on around the school and so on).  Nice little article about our very own "son of Tailgater" Ryan Glassman.  SOT, hopefully you saw it, it was nicely written.

Ahhhhh my new Red Men fan..... Your optimism is infectious, but the likes of a CCIW D-Line you may not have yet to witness!? Our running game will need to get better! How did you like the atmosphere in Kenosha for a DIII night-time  College football game? Pretty great night if you ask me. :D

Jake Smith did not start, but played regulaly throughout the game in various personnel packages. Played more in the second half if I had to count plays. He was the leading rusher with 54 yards in 11 touches. Looked good. Followed his blocks well, has shifty feet and good acceleration. He will add some muscle to his frame over his career and could indeed be a real good RB for Carthage.

Thanks redman04 for pointing out the article on Ryan in the "Carthaginian". We are certainly proud of him.   +K for you.

Where's the Augie vs B-W talk?  Isn't Augie still in the CCIW?
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

They are in fact in this league but by most accounts things are unsettled in Augie Nation. not many posters on here lately from Rock Island (that are worth responding to).

what do you want to talk about? plenty people on here have an interest in Augie/BW. I'll tell you in my opinion I would (and will) take your points and Augie all day from the OAC pickem's. on the other side your spread for ONU/Millikin isn't close to large enough unless ONU is a lower tier OAC team this year and I didn't know that.  ;D

It was a great atmosphere and the fireworks were nice!  The crowd was loud and into the game and it was a beautiful night on the shores of Lake Michigan.

I agree the running game will have to get better and I believe it will.  Our Oline got some confidence this weekend and will build off of that.

What is your thoughts of the game this week? Does Lakeland have a chance or is the spread to great? I understand the last several games have been competitive. I saw the UWW and Lakeland game last week and it was preety one sided. As one of the top programs in the CCIW I hope Lakeland will be able to stay competitive. Lakelands non-conference schedule is a meat grinder but should get them ready for their conference battles. Good Luck to your Red Men this week and the rest of the year.
