I agree with you on that.  He will do what is best for the team.  From what I've heard both QB's are exceptional, although you can't replace Kam Kniss.

I think the coaching staff and team is very confident in their QB situation.  I'm really excited to see how the 3-3-5 looks against opposing teams this year.

Memphis runs it amongst some other D-1 college programs and I followed them for a while when DeAngelo Williams was playing.  The defense is really good when you have alot of DB and LB type players but not alot of big time DL.

I guess I am trying to determine if it is going to be a benefit to Kniss or Fanthorpe to not have the majority of the snaps.   It will be interesting week 2 preparation as I dont feel Thorne really wants 2 QB's leading the pack.  He is very good however at conforming to his teams strengths so we may see it longer than anticipated if it is good for the team

Thorne is excellent at adjust year by year to the strengths of his personel.  When coaching at Wheaton-Warrenville South,  one year they had a QB name Beutger (spelling?) with some great receivers so they focused on the passing game and Beutger ended up with 60 TD passes in one season.  I believe they won the state championship that year.  Other years (perhaps the very next year), WWS had a huge, talented o-line with a stud RB.  So they focused on running more...  WWS won a least 2 state championships were the offense featured a huge running attack.

Coach Thorne will not force the personal to do things they aren't adept at doing, rather he will adjust what aspects of the offensive scheme take the focus to were the talent is.  With Kam Kniss gone and Sulo returning, I would anticipate a very balanced attack from NCC that probably will lean more towards the running game until the new QB's are established.  As the QB(s) come up to speed, then he'll adjust the offensive attack accordingly.

I'm a little concerned that you have dreams (nightmares or whatever) about Mugsy's nips at all.

Yikes.  I stop in to try to see if there's any Augie vs. BW talk and the subject of the day is "bleeding nipples"?  The CCIW is definitely one tough place!
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Yeah we take no prisoners here.

I expect the Auggie vs BW game to be very tough on both teams.  I think BW is a little stronger Defensivly and that Auggie still can not throw the football. (big shock there)

The game is at BW and I think thats a tough trip to make for any team.

I hope Auggie represents the CCIW well, but I don't see them comming out of there with the W

Close Mugsy.....Beutjer

and he had the luxury of throwing to former NC coach  Jon Schweighardt for the majority of those TD's (26 to be exact) so not quite the majority...you probably would have caught me on that one.

I'm sure that hscoach can confirm, but the playing surface at BW is supposed to be terrible as well.  It's the old style astroturf carpet stuff, and from what they say on the OAC board as hard as concrete.

I used to play on that stuff almost every game in HS.  Chicago Stadiums Hanson and Gately have that as thier turf.  Trufburn is awful

I have scars on my knees and elbows from a high school playoff game played at Gately stadium.  You might as well paint the WalMart parking lot green and play the game there.  That would be the equivalent to playing at Gately.  Brutal!

Its a great atmopsphere though.  Tough South Side of Chicago.  I'm actually going to be there tonight to see the Whitney Young Dolphins try to keep thier shut out streak alive against the Kenwood Broncos.

So far my old high school has scored 100 and held opponents to 0 and are 2-0.

I played on astroturf 3 times in my career.  Once, in a playoff game at Gately, once in the 6A state title game at U of I (I believe it was the last game on that surface before they got the new style turf) and then once my Freshman year of college at Marquette University.  Marquette had a club team that our JV team would play against.  It seemed much harder than the other 2 surfaces and we actually had 2 players, Mark Peiffer and Nick Armetta, end their careers that day because of the hard turf there.  Peif screwed up his knee and couldn't return, so he coached for the rest of his time in college.  Armetta tried to come back the following season, but couldn't run full speed without tremendous pain.  It can be very rough...

What happened to Beutjer?  Last I heard he got beat up by his roommate at Iowa and transferred to Illinois.  Will he see any playing time with the Illini?

He ended up starting a good chunk of his junior and senior year at Illinois and played pretty well.  I think his career at Illinios would have been even better had he not struggled with some nagging injuries (back problems).  I believe he may have even had back surgery.  As a result he was granted a 6th year of eligibility.

Career stats:
Quote2004: Granted sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

2003: Threw for 1,597 yards which gives him 4,108 career passing yards, seventh on Illinois' all-time passing list ... Averaged 228.1 yards passing per game and threw for 10 touchdowns ... Was 16-of-23 for 207 yards and four TDs vs. Illinois State ... Had a career day vs. California, setting career highs in completions (35), attempts (57), yards (430) and long pass (72); also had three TD passes ... His 430 yards marked the highest total in Memorial Stadium history and ranks as the fourth highest single-game passing total in school history ... Completed 63.0 percent of his passes ... Completed 31 of 44 passes (70 percent) for 284 yards and one touchdown in season opener vs. Missouri ... Started the first seven games before a back injury forced him to miss the remainder of the season.

2002: Led the Big Ten in passing yardage with 228.3 yards per game and was third in the conference in total offense with 228.9 yards per contest ... His 21 touchdowns were second in the Big Ten only to Heisman Trophy finalist Brad Banks of Iowa (26) ... Made seven starts and saw action in four other games ... Averaged 306 yards and 2.7 touchdowns, while completing 61.8 percent of his passes in his seven starts ... Threw four touchdown passes in his starting debut vs. Arkansas State and followed that up the next week with four TDs against San Jose State ... That was just the second time in school history that a quarterback has had back-to-back games with four touchdown passes ... Also had four TD passes in a 37-20 win at Wisconsin, Illinois' first win in Madison since 1992 ... Finished the season with 2,511 yards passing and 21 scores ... His 2,518 total yards is 10th on the Illinois single-season list ... His 21 touchdown passes are fourth on the Illinois single-season charts and ranks him seventh on the Illinois career charts ... Had four 300-yard passing days and his 426 yards passing vs. San Jose State was the fourth-highest single-game passing total in school history ... Nearly led Illinois to a win over No. 2-ranked and eventual national champion Ohio State with a 306-yard passing performance and one TD ... Entered the game in the third quarter against Penn State and threw for 157 yards on 19-of-28 passing and one touchdown ... Saw back-up action vs. Indiana... Connected on 28-of-38 passes for 426 yards against San Jose State, a Memorial Stadium record ... Also tossed four touchdown passes against San Jose State ... That performance merited a passing efficiency rating of 195.00, the 10th best passing efficiency day in Illinois history ... Was 18-of-22 (82 percent) for 277 yards and four touchdowns against Arkansas State, earning him a passing efficiency rating of 250.17 which is the third-best in school history ... Entered the Missouri game at the start of the fourth quarter and began the second half of the USM contest.

2001: Sat out the 2001 season after transferring from the University of Iowa.

High School: Illinois Player of the Year by USA Today, Gatorade and Champaign News-Gazette ... Viking Mike

Hey everyone...been a while since posted here...looking forward to the 6 1/2 hour trip to Berea, Ohio tomorrow to watch my beloved Vikings play the Yellow Jackets on Sat.  Having seen Augie last week, they did look crisp on offense.  Our defense will be the key.  Don't know what to expect as McMurray was hardly a challenge.  Last year I believe we had more passing yards and total yards than B-W, but 2 late turnovers by Augie were converted to 10 pts in a 17-7 loss.  I remember being very impressed by B-W's run defense last year, esp by their speedy linebackers.  While the majority of their defense returns, their offense appears to be young so hopefully Augie can cause some early turnovers, score, and control the clock with their offense.  It's been many a years since Augie went through the preconference schedule w/o a loss.  Here's hoping the Vikings can pull it out, squeak by Wisc-Platteville in 2 weeks and enter the CCIW race at 3-0.  Wheaton looks like a playoff team...and Carthage looks to be very good...North Central and Elmhurst will also be tough...even that night game in bloomington to begin the season looms big...........can't wait !!!   Good Luck to all the CCIW teams this weekend and here's hoping no one gets hurt on that surface at Baldwin-Wallace!
