Goodluck to all CCIW team this weekend, let try to get 20 wins in non-conf games!

Sounds like a wonderful goal, but may be a bit too optimistic.  20 wins would mean only 4 losses, and IWU @ Coe was already 1.  Millikin only beat woeful Illinois College by 2, and would need (dare I say it?) TITANic upsets to beat either ONU or Wabash (both top 25 teams).  IWU will be a heavy underdog vs. Mt St. Joe (at least it is in Bloomington), as will be NPU @ Rose-Hulman.  That would be 5 losses, and there are at least 6-7 other games that could be rated as tossups.

I'd say 17-7 (possibly 18-6) would be a more realistic goal, but, what the heck, let's try for 20! :)

With Millikin (expected, but 42-0?!), Augie and NPU (not UNexpected, though I picked them to win with my 2 and 1 confidence pickems) all losing, the CCIW falls to 8-4 non-conference.  20 wins would now take a miracle. :(

While hope springs eternal (though, I trust, not Hope @ Wheaton!), Wabash @ Millikin, MSJ @ IWU, and NPU @ RHIT all look like longshots (and UW-Platteville @ Augie certainly can't be counted in the win column just yet) - I'll stick my neck out at a final tally of 17-7 (+/- 1).

I'd like to see the CCIW go undeaten against the IBC with all the smack they've talked.

NCC lost to Concordia last year the first game of the season and then beat them in the playoffs, right?

Agreed. Millikin has really taken a dive as far as fielding winning teams the past 5 years.  What happened?

They always seem to have some good players and big bodies and all, but they can't seem to get it together like they did in the late 90's and 2000-2001.

Agree.  Up front, Milikin may have the biggest O-line pound-for-pound in the CCIW over the past 5 years, but have not be able to translate that into victories.  This may be partially due to spreading out the offense - 3 to 4 wide receiver sets, shotgun and a lot of zone blocking.  I think this is partially due to strong skill positions and trying to distribute the ball across the field.  Mount Union executes this to near perfection, but their O-line can run and are pretty athletic.  Maybe Milikin should get back into the power I and pound the ball behind there big FBs.  Saw glimses of smash mouth football with Wallick in the backfield, but not enough to get it done.

I believe that's correct.

Sterny & Mugsy,

Sorry for the unintended offense. By reasonably ranked, my only basis was Milikin was picked to tie for 5th in conference. I wasn't trying to imply that Millikin was the class of their league and certainly not trying to offend one of the top overall DIII sports conferences in the country!

Well, we still don't have much of a leg to stand on. Wheaton is the only CCIW team in the last decade or so to beat a non MUC team. I think we are O-fer with many other chances (NCC v Cap 2x, Augie v BW 2x, Millikin ONU 3x). The reality is we haven't gotten it done v the OAC so whatever is said we deserve.

And another year without a CCIW win...

Corthage Fans;

Congrats on the victory over Lakeland. Great atmosphere for college football. Good Luck with the CCIW season. You should challenge for the #1 spot.

Another beautiful night in Kenosha for football! The Red Men continue to impress early on with another solid team effort in beating Lakeland 35-16. The offense continues their success with "air Kenosha" as 4 of the 5 TDs came through the air. Dan DeBoeuf (So. QB) started his first game and made the most of his opportunity. He set school passing records for most completions in a game (30) and most passing yards (316) and looked very comfortable and confident leading the Red Men offense. The running game is still a work in progress. Andy Bures (Jr. RB) had another solid night with impressive hard running picking up 81 yds in 13 touches for a 6+ yd per carry average. Jake Smith had 16 yds on 5 carries. From there the running game struggled. For the game Carthage rushed for 77 yards on 38 carries. Need more production than 2 yards per carry rushing. This rushing stat is a little skewed as Deboeuf had -29 yards on 3 sacks, but no excuse.

The defense looked under control all game. They did gave up 351 total yds (49 rushing, 302 passing) in the game but, they keep Lakeland out of the endzone. They bent but, didn't break. Lakeland's final score came with 10 seconds remaining and reserves were on the field. The Red Men had 3 Ints and 1 fumble recovery. All-in-all it looked like Carthage came away from this game healthy and looking alike a team with some real promise. It's off to sunny California this weekend for the Red Men as they take on the "Poets" of Whittier College.

Thanks old 40. I'm glad you enjoyed your evening at Carthage (other than the final score I'm sure ;) Best wishes to you and Lakeland  from here on. Carthage has always provided an enjoyable atmosphere for a game, day or night. The tailgating crowd is growing bigger and bigger every year. Every seat in the stands are filled on the home side every game. Can't wait until the stadium renovation is completed increasing the home stands size and replacing the visitor stands, which leave a little to be desired.

carthage having a nice preseason. I have thought of them as a darkhorse contender this year and it will be interesting to see how they do on the road this week.

I would be more interested in seeing how Coach Rucks does on the plane, he's not a big fan of flying...

Jim Matson

Ittersagen has to be on the Team of the Week tomorrow...the only thing he didn't do yesterday was return a interception for a TD.  Maybe the anklebreak has made him a better player???
