Nice win by Wheaton today.  Hopefully someone will keep us all in the loop on Ullrich's situation.

Greg, I just invested 15 minutes of my life reading the thread on the IBC board.  Your final blow was...well...so final.  Unlike Moleman, I don't need that 15 minutes back.  Nice work pal!

Just got back from Naperville (left at the end of the 3rd qtr) where North Central was up 40-0.

A few observations...
Kniss and Fanthorpe really seem to be the same QB. Neither one really differentiated himself from the other. Kniss throws a better deep ball, but other than that there really wasn't anything that stood out from either.

Sulo has really good vision and runs well for a "smaller" back. He takes hits really well and gets good yards after contact.  Very good back, reminds me a LOT of Holden from North Central (during his fresh and soph. years), but a little stronger.

Between Sulo and Israel Brown, North Central has two quality backs, both with good speed.

Wenger (LB) is a beast. He was all over the place.

It was odd seeing North Central run, run, run...I haven't seen that since I was in school there...but I am willing to bet that part of the reason is (not just having Sulo) that their recieving corps isn't as strong as it has been in the past few seasons.

BU wasn't very good......2 blocked punts lead to 2 North Central scores, an INT led to another. Lots of turnovers. Game did see very sloppy as someone mentioned earlier. I'm interested to see BU's yardage totals, especially rushing, because there was NOTHING there all night for BU.

Will post stats tomorrow if they haven't been put up.
You win! You always do!

A Few thoughts on NC first half against BU..
Defense looked very solid against a less than talented BU team.  linebackers are quick.  Rotated alot in the first half just to keep guys fresh and use backups in meaningful playing time.
Wenger, hammes, kostelic  probably not a better starting 3 backers in the conference...I am sure that will be debated
Offense looked sluggish throwing the ball with a few overthrows, very solid running game, sulo is a stud, making people miss like a punt returner.  We have been spoiled the last 4 years with Kniss at the the helm. That being said...both Fanthorpe and Kyle Kniss have alot of potential and 3 years to do it.
Special teams penalties cost NC some serious yardage, something that needs to be addressed before the conference season starts.

Final score from the cornfields:

NPU 33
Eureka 12

This outcome was pretty much what I expected, based upon what I saw of the Red Devils last year. Eureka is just plain dreadful. The Vikings racked up almost 400 yards of offense, Shelby Wood threw two TD passes and ran for another, and Kelvyn West ran for 184 yards on 21 carries and added another score.

It's nice to pick up that W, of course, but playtime's over now for NPU. Rose-Hulman is going to be much, much more difficult to beat, especially in Terre Haute.

Since I will be dropping a bit in pick-ems this week (I noted that my IWU pick was loyalty, not brains, but they DID lead as late as the 3rd quarter), and since I am unlikely to pick NPU to win again this year (though I will be tempted against Millikin), I want it duly noted that I picked NPU to win as my '7' game. ;)  (While all but one picker named NPU, only 2 others went above the lowest confidence of 1 or 2, and no one else was above 4.)

Folks, the CCIW is not the OAC or WIAC in football, but we ARE very solid.  NPU is bad by CCIW standards, but, as Greg noted, Eureka is bad by ANY standards.  Quite frankly, I was surprised the score was as close as it was!

NP has definitely found an institution that can be beaten.  NP is something like 8-0 against Eureka since 1957.

Who placed 7th in the CCIW coaches' poll?

Eureka scored a touchdown with two minutes and change remaining. I have no doubt that Scott Pethtel pulled his starters long before then. I strongly suspect that the final margin could've been wider if the NPU coaches had wanted to run up the score.

NPU has found several institutions that can be beaten, Mark. F'rinstance, the Park's nearest D3 neighbor, Concordia (IL), is always a sure win. As I was saying in here several weeks ago, there are enough bad small-college football teams within a 400-mile radius of Chicago for NPU to go 2-1 or 3-0 if simply winning non-conference games in order to pad the overall record was Scott Pethtel's sole intent. MacMurray, Lawrence, Grinnell, Beloit ... the patsies are out there. Teams like these are the reason why NPU has a winning record against non-conference competition in this decade. I don't think it serves the program's best interest just to load up on those teams, though. The best way to improve a program is to play good competition and force yourself to rise to its level, and that's true for non-conference play as well as for conference play.

Besides, NPU should worry more about beating a middling IBC program like Benedictine (a team that, incidentally, got tossed around like a rag doll by two other CCIW teams over the past two weeks) than about finding more lesser-league cupcakes.

C'mon, Mark. It's on the CCIW site.

Mark, was that an honest question, or a shot? ;D

IWU was 7th in the poll, but there is no way that is where they will fnish.  On my season predictions, I've already got Ws in ink over NPU and Millikin.  I also have Ws (very lightly, in pencil!) over Elmhurst and Carthage (though realistically, I'd be happy with either, ecstatic with both).  And I figure their defense makes them a very dangerous underdog to anyone in the conference.  I'd bet the farm on 6th, bet somewhat on 5th, and wouldn't bet heavily against 4th or 3rd.  (Beyond that, I'm afraid the guys in white coats would be coming for me!)

Just returned from the Carthage-Whittier game.  As has been reported on here, Carthage held on for a 35-28 win.  I'm trying to be very objective about this, but from the stands, it was not a very impressive win against a team that was not supposed to challenge Carthage.  Let me qualify my comments and add that a win is a win, and sometimes you take them however you can get them.

That being said, a few observations were Merchut has great size and had a terrific game, and the qb did a nice job getting him the ball.  Outside of that, didn't seem like a lot of positives to take away from this one.  Carthage's running game didn't seem to get much going all night.  A few nice runs here or there, but without looking at the stats, the running game didn't seem to stand out as an observer.  The Carthage d-line looks pretty smallish, not a lot of height.  Overall, not a good night for their defense as a whole.  That's not a team that should be scoring 28 points.

Again, I know travel is a distraction, and you can't complain about a win.  Perhaps it would have been a different game in Kenosha.  But for one night anyways, not the best showing by the Redmen.
Hail, Hail, the gang's all here, all out for Wesleyan!

Pat Coleman

I think Whittier is an up and coming team and I'm not overly surprised it was a competitive game.
