It is bad execution but if a player continues to do it why is he in there? I don't know if the long snapper is the only guy in bloomington that can do that but its not likely. If it were me I would put a new guy in there. How much worse can it be?

But what if you have switched long snappers and the new guy is also not producing?  Is it now the fault of the special teams coach for making the switch?

If snapping it over your punter's head regularly is an acceptable result then you can blame the execution of the player. If your guard in basketball regularly misses free throws will you have him in at the end of the game when the other team is fouling? That seems to me to be a coaching decision. Long snapping is such a specialized skill that teams with little to no depth may indeed have a hard time finding someone to do it. I have watched CCIW football for over 25 years now and I can't remember more than 5 or 6 times the ball is snapped over the punter's head. In high school games you will see it fairly regularly but in college its pretty rare. get someone else in there. That's a coaching decision.

keep in mind the same coaches are also the ones stocking the cupboard. I know there are a lot of variables that goes into getting good players throughout your program but IWU has had it in the past (they certainly have it in basketball) but for whatever reason, as you have said, they haven't had the depth in the past 5 years they had throughout the 90's.

The topic of why IWU's football recruiting has fallen off the last 4-5 years is an entirely different discussion.  Without getting into all of that at this time, I will say that comparing football recruiting to basketball is tough to do.  In basketball, if you find Adam Dauksas, Keelan Amelianovich, and Zach Freeman and put some role players around them, you can win the league and make a run at the Final Four.  In football it takes a bunch of great players.

My point here is simply that it may not be fair to pin IWU's early 2007 special teams play on the coaches responsible for special teams.   Without seeing IWU play or being familiar with all of the personnel issues, you've made some pretty bold statements about where blame belongs and I just don't think it is that black and white.

I haven't made any statements (or haven't intended to) about blame for IWU's personnel problems. I do believe good teams play well on special teams and that is a product of good players in your system and a strong emphasis and commitment by the coaches. If guys are missing tackles in coverage because they don't have the speed or athleticism to execute or if they are getting knocked down by bigger faster players, that's one thing. but snapping it over a punters head and repeated breakdowns in punt protection doesn't seem to me to be solely personnel issues. As you say I haven't seen IWU play this year and I do know that guys like Mike Wagner are as good as it gets so I am sure there are other issues involved.

Mugsy,

How is the QB doing?

I don't have any new definitive information as I missed church this morning due to my last 20 mile run before the Chicago marathon.

There are a few players families who attend my church.  Even so, I don't feel comfortable sharing any news until I get confirmation of the details and until it is made public by the family or the school.  But what I had heard last night is serious to say the least.  To echo usee's comment, if what I heard was true, I would not expect to see Ullrich anytime soon starting for the Thunder.

At this point his personal well being supercedes any thought of his playing football.

Those 47 point victories against the crap IBC conference opponents aren't worth anything apparently!  Time to upgrade the schedule!

1 team went behind you and two teams moved ahead. Springfield lost to an unranked team and dropped preciptiously from 9th. Linfield won vs a ranked opponent after losing to a d2 school last week and moved from 15 to 13. BW's defense continues to look impenetrable and moved from 14 to 13. NCC actually gained 10 pts in the polls but the voters felt more strongly about Linfield and BW. It has nothing to do with NCC dropping.

Entertainment alert:

"Are you Kidding" is back on the IBC board, lambasting Greg and suggesting the BU coach should REALLY be fired for losing to NCC.  [I couldn't make this stuff up! ;D]

I didn't hear about Ulrich, did it happen in the game?

Thoughts and prayers for sure for him and the family.

It happened early in the 3rd quarter.  Zach had an outstanding 1st half, as evident by his CCIW offensive player of the week nod.  He came out for the first series of the half and was sack twice.  The next series Bradley was in at QB, so I thought he was done for the day given the score was 38-7 or 41-7.

Shortly after that he collasped, the game was halted for about 15 minutes while the ambulance took him to the hospital.
