Final from Terre Haute: RHIT 21, NPU 14.  I assume the Vikings played quite well, because that is closer than I would have expected (but, alas, a loss nonetheless).

Final non-conference tally: 16-8.  Only one or two unexpected losses - NCC's shocking loss at home today and perhaps NPU's home loss to Benedictine.  No shocking wins either (though Olivet was ranked higher in Kickoff than IWU, and we won at their place).  I'd hoped for a game or two higher, but overall the nonconference record went pretty much true to expectations.

This Rocky kid is pretty good too.  42-7 Wheaton.
I think Wheatons third sting freshman RB may be the best RB in the CCIW.  Time will tell.  He was an All state RB and LB in Arizona.

That is one of the stupidest things I have ever read on here.

I was at the game and this kid is really good but he is not even close to the best RB in this conference. And if he is the best RB in the CCIW what is he doing as 3rd string on his own team? don't come on here and embarrass us.

My apologies for my previous post.....on we go.

I was in Wheaton tonight and the Thunder looked really good. Studebaker w 3 sacks in the first half. I felt really bad for the OT from Hope, he had no chance. Andy was double teamed a fair amount with an RB and occasionally a TE but surprisingly he was single blocked by an inferior player a lot.

Hope threw to Ittersagen's side 3x in the first half. He had 2 breakups and a pick. His punt return was sick. Wheaton will be fine. Rowson did indeed make a big difference. The 2 qbs were better than I expected.

This Hope team is the better than washU and Albion and Wheaton dominated. Impressive win going into the conference slate.

WashU wins in Naperville??? WOW.

Perhaps the biggest news was  before the game. I was driving in and I listened to Swider on the radio. They played a previously recorded interview. He talked about Ullrich. Said Zack came back on wednesday and swider was in his home wednesday and thursday night. He said Zack is most interested in coming back to play ASAP. Swider did not rule it out as a possibility. Apparently he has some rehab but doctors expect a full recovery. He will be talking with doctors about getting clearance to return to the field. WOW. I assumed he was done. Now there is a long way to go from the kid wanting to play to actually getting clearance and preparing to play but this is big news in my mind.

That's been the main problem all season so far for Hope i.e. giving up the long bomb although it didn't apparently matter this evening since Wheaton was pounding us with the running game.  I am at a loss to explain why Hope's secondary continues to give up the simple long pass play; on the other hand, I guess there is not really much to say anyway about that ..."we hold these truths to be self-evident" ::)

Anyway, congratulations to Wheaton on a fine win and good luck the rest of the way.  One of these years, we really need to beat you guys! ;D

That IS wonderful news!  From what I've read about such injuries, IF the original reports were accurate, I would have my doubts that he would ever be cleared to play again (far to high a risk of re-injury), BUT sometimes original reports end up 'inoperative' (as the cliche from several White House's have put it!).

Regardless of whether or not he is able to play again, it is certainly sounding better and better.

Swider confirmed he had 2 burst blood vessels in his head and he described him as being unconscious on the sidelines last week. He also said the situation was "very serious". Miracles do happen.

Yeah... he's a big, hard runner.  Fights for the extra yards.  Only a freshman.

Impressive.  He runs like an upperclassman - shoulders square and downhill.

Short recap of Augie game:

Augustana 34, UW-Platville 24

Augie struggled in the first half allowing UWP to go up 17-10 at half.  UWP scored 3 points off of an early bad punt giving them great field position and then a TD when Augie fumbled in their own territory with about 1 minute left in the half.

Augie turned the game around completely in the 2nd half dominating on both sides of the ball outscoring UWP 24-7.

One interesting stat: Augie was 8-13 passing with 147 yards including one TD.

Just got back from the Wheaton game.  Die hard fan with my bad hip and herniated disk in my back.  Yet the doctor gave me happy magic pills.  The defensive play was off the chart.  Possibly two all Americans on the defense Andy Studebaker and Pete Ittersagen.  Wheaton mixed it up on offense Noah Dryer had a great game.  QB Jeremy Chupp looked great at times yet had a couple of bad throws with NO Wheaton player around at all.  Wheaton looks to be one of the best defenses in D3 so far.  One series of offensive plays yielded some penalties but overall the penalties were down.  Overall another great game to build on.

Did you pick this before me?

Thunder,

I really don't know what you are talking about. Are you trying to claim an "eye for talent" and predicting that ittersagen and studebaker would be all american's? You posted this one year ago when both of them had been 1st team all conference as a freshman and a sophmore respectively. There's a pretty big difference calling someone an all american or the best in the conference AFTER a full season than doing so after ONE GAME.  Also, any player who is 1st team all conference as a freshman or sophomore in a league like the CCIW has a good chance to become all american.

I am not taking anything away from Rocky Gingg. After last night He may in fact be the best running back Wheaton has. He also could end up becoming an all american AT SOME POINT. But there are a few guys in this league who have PROVEN it already over the course of a season or more and your comments seemed to me to be completely disrespectful of those guys. Dominic Sulo IS the best running back in this conference right now and that would be hard to argue. Marcus Dunlop is also a top running back and Josh Galliart from Augie (and Ryan McGinnis if you think the Augie qb is an RB in disguise) has also proven his value.

sophomore db #12 peter iitersagen-1st team all cciw as a frosh. he is the best we have and top in cciw so should be a good test for us vs a veteran receiver group.

DE #90 studebaker- very athletic and all conference caliber

Thunder,

By the way, I posted this almost a month before you posted your comments back in 2006. Does this make me a prophet?  ;D

One interesting stat: Augie was 8-13 passing with 147 yards including one TD.

Now I have seen everything.  In addition, I checked the stats and it appears that there were some midrange passes, not just 3 passes for 2 yards and 1 for 85 yards like we would be used to seeing from Augie.

That NPU loss was hardly unexpected, Chuck. Given the way that the Bennies dominated last year's matchup between the two teams, I think even the most optimistic Vikings fan had the Park as an underdog going into that game.

Disappointing loss yesterday for NPU down in Terre Haute. The Vikings were up 14-0 in the third quarter, and ended up surrendering three second-half touchdowns to lose the game. Still, this is the same Rose-Hulman squad that showed up at Holmgren Field last fall and absolutely pasted the Vikings to the tune of 25-0 (and it could've been much worse if the Engineers hadn't let up in the fourth quarter). I wouldn't be surprised if RHIT is down from last year, but yesterday's showing still represents forward progress for North Park. Of course, it'd be nice to have forward progress that actually shows up in the W column, but you take what you can get.

Greg,

I agree. NPU has to be disappointed with a 1-2 record going into conference play but they have shown progress. leading 14-0 on the road to a better team is a good sign. Obviously finishing those games is the next step. I still look for NPU to win 1 conference game this year.
