On a soccer note, Carthage beat Wheaton last night 1-0 for their first victory ever over the Thunder, and a share of the CCIW Title.  Red Men have to feel good about that!

Soccer, dogs,  what's next tampons?    :D

If they were in control of the game throughout, Augie wouldn't have outgained Wheaton by 100 yards.

I let this go the first time but this is ridiculous. Augie got 70 of those "yards" on a fake punt and another 100+ on passing plays (50+ on a 3rd and 12 w a blown coverage).

the fact is wheaton was leading 21-7 and Augie was punting with 3 min left in the half. Wheaton was clearly in control and had they not roughed the punter they had a chance to make it a 3 score lead going into halftime. what game were you watching??

Augie could not run the ball in the second half and the fake punt gave them momentum (ittersagen missed a tackle that would have made this 70 yard gain about a 20 yd gain). the fumbled punt was a result of ittersagen manhandling the blocker and ripping the ball out of the returners hands.

The game I watched had wheaton clearly with opportunities to blow the game open on several occasions. To Augie's credit they made momentum changing plays and stayed in it to the end. I also was pretty sure the dropped pass in the endzone was tipped by the wheaton DB which would have made it a tough catch. If Augie is relying on the pass to win a game they aren't playing very well in my view.

usee,

Couldn't have said it better myself.  Augie crawled back into the game, not because they dominated in their typical fashion.  A fake punt and some freaky pass plays resulted in at least 150+ yards of extra yards.  While the game ultimately came down to the final play and Wheaton could have just as easily lost, it shouldn't have come to that point (if Augie6 insists on the mantra of Augie shoulda won, I'll hold to when it was 21-7, Wheaton shouldn't have allowed the fake punt and should have gone on to win by at least 2 TD's).  Ridiculous banter if you ask me... the final was 28-24 Wheaton.

It was a very exciting game, tough for anyone to loss.  BUT no matter what "coulda/woulda/shoulda" logic you want to expound upon, the score won't change.

Does anyone else find it funny that we have heard people like True Augie Alum, complain about augie's outdated offense and want them to throw the ball more and this year I think augie has thrown more than ever and could potentially have their worst season since 1979?  Maybe if it ain't broke don't fix it!

TAA care to respond?

Hey Wheaton Fans.....

If you make it into the play-offs will you get back most of your injured players?

I know a certain defensive player was a beast last year against Mount.  He didn't make a ton of tackles in last year's game, but when I asked LK later if the kid was overrated, his reply was....."heck no....he was UNDERrated....we just ran most of our plays AWAY from him".   ;D

Here's hoping you get healthy and ready for a nice play-off run.

That would be Andy Studebaker and he will likely return for any post season run (or walk?). It would appear that a few of the guys who have been banged up and missed time will return but in no way will the Thunder be the team they could have been having lost Zach Ullrich (QB), McKinney (leading tackler, captain lb), Christener (1st team all conf OT) and Reyes (transfer from air force, DL) for the year. there are many others but these are potentially 3 all americans that won't play for the Thunder the rest of the way and that hurts.

As a Thunder fan it is a bummer to not have what could have been the best Wheaton team ever not represent us in the post season but that's football. We cannot be disappointed with a 7-0 record and a chance to represent the CCIW in the playoffs if we play well these last 3 games.

It is just that Thunder fans (and likely the team) have come to expect the current result and have lately focused on the question of how to compete in alliance? The prospect of going to alliance generally is a difficult proposition but going there without 3 potential all american players is a little more daunting.

Pat,
After seeing the NC/Elmhurst and Wheaton/Augie game,  how do you feel our conference stacks up against the others in terms of both talent and depth?

The winning TD pass (although a well placed ball by Norris) should have never happened.  Augie's safety was in position to make that play but took a poor angle to the ball and allowed it to go over his head.

Not beat a dead horse (but that is my rap so here we go):

Augie6, you were an excellent db at Augie in their 80's run so it makes sense you understand secondary play. Did you watch how Augie's db's were playing wheaton's recievers? I am not sure how they can defend many passes with their technique. besides that, this play was 3rd and long and Wheaton often runs the square in route in that situation. It is conceivable that the safety was anticipating this route (the initial pattern of a post and square in are identical) and was looking to jump the square in and was surprised by the post?

In any case, judging from the stats Augie is taking a fair number of "bad angles" these days. They gave up 3 passing plays of 20+ yds in the wheaton game ( wheaton had recievers past their db's on 3 other occasions, 2 drops and 1 bad throw). Augie also gave up 6 passing plays of 20+ yds at carthage, 3 of them going for TD's.

High praise from Kehres for Studebaker.  Thanks for sharing  skunks!

I agree.  There are still 3 weeks where the Thunder could stumble, so they are not in the clear yet.  I really think it speaks to Wheaton's depth that they have been able to plug holes from injury.  And of course, the coaching has played a large part in the continued succes too.  I'm knocking on wood that it continues.

Besides IWU the team that is really playing well right now is NCC. I am very interested to see how they do on the road in Rock Island where they have not won in a long, long time. While I would pick NCC to win this game winning in rock island may be the hardest road trip in the CCIW.

And if NCC gets past this huge test they get the green machine in Naperville next weekend. These next two weeks are a great preview for the showdown in Btown on Nov 10.

I think (from my playing days) the 2 hardest places to win a road game are 1) Bloomington
2) Rock Island
3) Kenosha

Just from personal experiences, though with the recent uprising of NC  you could put Naperville up there with Kenosha.
Millikin used to be a stingy, hostile place and is still a tough place to pick up a victory.

Jaybird,

although I didn't include on my list (for obvious reasons) I am surprised you didn't include Wheaton on your list? considering they are 34-1 at home since 2002 (which should span your playing days) and Elmhurst hasn't been within several TD's of Wheaton when playing them at E. McCully.  ??? ;D

Augie is definitely tough at home.  Their last home loss was to Baldwin-Wallace in 2006 the second game of the season.  Their last home conference loss was to Wheaton back in 2004, the last game of the year.  So, 2+ years without a conference loss at home proves RI is a tough place to play.
