It's been a while folks.  I've been keeping quiet recently dealing with some non football things and some coaching football things. Glad to be back...

Glad to see the Cardinals doing so well and winning another play-off game under Thorne.  The Cardinals face thier toughest opponent by far in UWW.

I think we're going to see more CCIW-WIAC matchups in comming years because (and Pat please correct me if I'm wrong) the NCAA changed the way regional rankings were calculated to allow schools in different regions to compete if they were within 500 miles.  It used to be that if you played out of region that hurt the possibility of going to the play-offs.  That was some years ago and with that being changed (I believe, once again I differ to Pat) I would expect even more CCIW-WIAC matchups.

With that being said most CCIW schools schedules are set up some years in advance and will take a little time to cycle to the next open date.  This is all speculation IMHO.

Also, WIAC schools are having trouble scheduling ANYONE in DIII, so lets not pick on the CCIW alone for being WIAC wary.

UW-Eau Claire: 2 non DIII opponents (2-0)
UW-La Crosse: 1 non DIII opponent (1-0)
UW-Platteville: 2 non DIII opponents (1-1)
UW-Stevens Point: 3 non DIII opponents (3-0)
UW-Stout: 1 non DIII opponent (0-1)
UW-Whitewater: 1 non DIII opponent (0-1)

Just want to wish everybody a safe and meaningful Thanksgiving Day and weekend.  What a great holiday!  Eat, football, eat, football (rest)  more eating, and another football game.  What could be better?  :D

Good luck to NC this weekend.  Play well and hopefully you guys can pull off an upset.

I know Tom Journell would love to schedule a UW school like Oshkosh.  I think the program is developing and probably 2-3 years away from a UWgame.

Does IWU have Olivet next year?  Otherwise Olivet has Elmhurst, IWU, and now NC?  Whoa baby,  by week 3 Olivet will be sick of the CCIW!  :o

I believe IWU has 3 new non-conference contracts beginning next year -- Coe, Mount St. Joseph, and Olivet are all gone.  The only one I remember for sure is Hope.

Regarding CCIW/WIAC games, IWU had a home & home w/ Eau Claire in 2004 and 2005 and La Crosse in 2002 and 2003.

Good Luck to NC in their playoff game this weekend. Hopefully it will be a better ending than it was for Franklinlast weekend. Have a safe trip and a Happy Thanksgiving.

NCC, you're right about the rule change that may provide WIAC-CCIW matchups in the future, but I believe the distance is 200 miles to make a game "in region" if the team is in a different region (e.g. North and West).  What changes things is that the NCAA instituted a broader regional concept that goes beyond the 200 mile rule.  Take a look at the link.  The rule is on page 24 under 4.12.1.1 Division III Geographical Regions. http://www.ncaa.org/library/membership/division_iii_manual/2007-08/2007-08_d3_manual.pdf  For example, take Wheaton (North), Occidental (West), and Centre (South).  Illinois is in the same "grouping" as California, therefore Wheaton v Occidental is an in-region game despite being in separate regions.  However, Illinois is not in the same grouping as Kentucky and Wheaton and Centre are in different regions.  Therefore, the Wheaton v Centre matchup would be an out of region game despite the fact that KY is significantly closer than CA.   It's the geographical region that would qualify the Illinois and Wisconsin schools to play in-region games.  Isn't 500 miles and under the distance they will bus teams in the playoffs?

For 2008 and 2009, Wheaton has schedule Concordia (Wis.), Bethel and Hope for non-conference games.

So 2 playoff teams from 2007, plus Hope who has been in the playoffs several times in the past 5 years.  A rather challenging schedule to say the least...

I know the IBFC is disbanding and members are heading to the SLIAC and NAthCon.  Anybody know offhand if the NAthCon will have a Pool A berth immediately?

In-region opponents include...

1) Teams in your Division III sports region (for us, the Midwest)
2) Teams within 200 miles
3) Teams in your NCAA "Administrative Region", as I believe people are calling it (added last year)

Illinios and Wisconsin are in the same Administration Region (Region IV) as basically the entire "West" region, so any CCIW game vs the WIAC, MIAC (St. John's, St. Thomas), NWC (Linfield, Puget Sound), SCIAC (Occidental, LaVerne), etc is in-region.  Texas is also in our same Administative Region, so games vs the likes of Trinity or Mary Hardin-Baylor would be in-region too.

In basketball, IWU plays @ Occidental and @ Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (both in L.A. area) this year.  Those games on the west coast are in-region while the Titans' recent game vs Albion (300 miles away) was not.  Kind of strange, but that is the way it works.

I see that UWW has a grass playing surface. I hope NCC buys different shoes for their players. Today's game at Franklin was NCC's first game on grass this year. In their turf shoes, our backs and receivers slipped and fell several times on potential big plays.

If you look at the photos from the game you can clearly see that NCC is wearing spikes.

It is possible that they should have used longer spikes. They look a little short. Are those what you would consider "turf shoes?"  (No sarcasim or anything intended, I've seen two different kinds of turf spikes one are the shorter cleats and others are a kind of bumped (not cleated) sole)

Because of the turnover, neither NathCon or SLIAC will have an AQ until 2010.

No, my bad! A player that did not make the playoff roster told me that the team had turf shoes on and that is why our players were slipping and falling. I, too, saw in the photos that they were wearing spikes.

They were wearing the "turf spikes" designed by New Balance for the grassy turf that they play on.  It is a molded cleat with about 15 hard plastic nubs on the bottom of the shoe, designed to dig into grassy turf, not real grass.  New Balance did not issue the team grass spikes, which is why they were slipping.

Quote from: footballfan413 on November 21, 2007, 08:20:09 AMBut you are guilty of the same in your first statement.  Why would you say that WIAC athletes don't need to take out student loans because they only have to pay a state tuition bill?  I know plenty that do.

For ten years? C'mon, man. I find it very hard to believe that Wisconsin state-school tuition bills are so high that UW-system students have to take out ten-year bank loans to pay them.

I had to pay back my student loan to the tune of $80 a month for ten years, and that was in spite of the fact that I was a partial-scholarship student at North Park. I was certainly close to the norm, too, based upon what my peers told me that they were paying for school.

Happy Turkey Day everyone.  Hope that everyone has a safe and happy one!  Please remember to make responsible choices!

Since it is Thanksgiving, I'm going to list a few things I'm thankful for.
1.  mrs. matblake.
2.  Sausage and onion pizza.  I know it's shallow, but I can't get enough of that topping combination.
3.  This site.  Seriously, it's great to have a place to come and talk about stuff that 10 years ago there was no forum for, except maybe if you got Don Hansen's Gazette.  And that didn't have any interaction.
4.  Men's Health Magazine.  Yes, shallow again, but I seriously look forward to getting my copy in the mail every month.
5.  York Peppermint Patties.
