Ok, back to football.  North Central is definitely the underdog this weekend.  I definitely think they should put the pressure on with their defense.  I don't know if UWW has faced anyone with the 3-3-5 scheme yet this year.  That might take some time for the UWW to figure out.

The big thing is that the Cardinal offense cannot turn the ball over.  UMHB is a great team and you saw what the Whitewater team did with the turnovers the Crusaders gave them.  Granted, I think North Central is built a little better to come back because UMHB really emphasizes the run, but if NCC turns the ball over 2 or more times, I think it might not be pretty at the end.

For 2008 and 2009, Wheaton has schedule Concordia (Wis.), Bethel and Hope for non-conference games.

So 2 playoff teams from 2007, plus Hope who has been in the playoffs several times in the past 5 years.  A rather challenging schedule to say the least...

Looks like Hope is going to spend their entire non-conference schedule in the CCIW as Carthage also has Hope on their schedule for 2008 & 2009. Carthage will be playing Hope, Lakeland and Valparaiso non-conference for at least the next two seasons. Picking up Valpo is an interesting move for Carthage as Valpo is a NCAA Division I (Championship Subdivision) team playing out of the Pioneer Football League. This looks like a strong non-conference schedule for the Red Men.

Can anyone shed some light on how SOS is calculated and/or effected when you play teams out of/above your division? Was Valpo associated with the CCIW at one point in time? I recall in my youth (early 70's) going to Valpo to scout them with my dad for Wheaton.

Pioneer Football League is DI non-athletic scholarship.  Not sure how you can compare competitiveness and SOS.  Does SOS include SO (strength of opponent)  and SOO (strength of opponent's opponents)?  How that all factors out of conference or Division I do not know?  Geez what a helpful guy I am today eh?

Valpo lost 17-13 this year to Trinity International of the NAIA Mid-States Football League West Div that went 2-9 for the season.  Valpo was 5-6 last year 2-6 in conference.  Again not sure that all helps.

My son has a former HS teammate on Valpo so that will be good seeing him next year.  Well, he has a former college teammate at Wheaton too but he really doesn't remember seeing him after the game!   :(

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I made a comment on the Heartland Board, prior to the game at Franklin, that it would be the first time since the CUW game that North Central would play on a grass field. And that could always be a factor but I tried to not make a big deal about it. . I really expected that players would have alternate shoes, and the coaches would have prepared the players for the differences in surfaces.

Millikin and IWU are still grass fields, but those were home games for NCC this season.

I see that UWW has a grass playing surface. I hope NCC buys different shoes for their players. Today's game at Franklin was NCC's first game on grass this year. In their turf shoes, our backs and receivers slipped and fell several times on potential big plays.

If you look at the photos from the game you can clearly see that NCC is wearing spikes.

It is possible that they should have used longer spikes. They look a little short. Are those what you would consider "turf shoes?"  (No sarcasim or anything intended, I've seen two different kinds of turf spikes one are the shorter cleats and others are a kind of bumped (not cleated) sole)

They were wearing the "turf spikes" designed by New Balance for the grassy turf that they play on.  It is a molded cleat with about 15 hard plastic nubs on the bottom of the shoe, designed to dig into grassy turf, not real grass.  New Balance did not issue the team grass spikes, which is why they were slipping.

Well, per the website, a Wisconsin resident could max out at about $5400 per semester at UWW. So, it's not that far a stretch that you could leave UWW after four years with a fair amount of student loans to repay.

Quote from: footballfan413 on November 21, 2007, 08:20:09 AMBut you are guilty of the same in your first statement.  Why would you say that WIAC athletes don't need to take out student loans because they only have to pay a state tuition bill?  I know plenty that do.

For ten years? C'mon, man. I find it very hard to believe that Wisconsin state-school tuition bills are so high that UW-system students have to take out ten-year bank loans to pay them.

I had to pay back my student loan to the tune of $80 a month for ten years, and that was in spite of the fact that I was a partial-scholarship student at North Park. I was certainly close to the norm, too, based upon what my peers told me that they were paying for school.

Indeed, it is difficult at times to compare and/or judge the DIAA non-scholarship programs in regards to their oft DIII opponents.  In some years, the DIAA non-scholarship teams are very good and much higher tier than most DIII teams and can "hang" with some (although obviously not all) of the DIAA scholarship programs.  Dayton, San Diego and yes, even Valpo have had years like that of recent.  Yet, there have also been years where Valpo and some of its Pioneer League colleagues (i.e. Butler) have a hard time beating some DIII teams.  It all depends on the year, but overall, I would say that DIAA non-scholarship can be a slight tier above DIII, yet I still think scheduling them is a "plus" for experience gained for possible playoff participation.  Just MO.

Anyway, it will be good to see how Hope does against the CCIW teams the next couple of years.  Good series scheduled and some different teams for a change, although the rivalry with Wheaton is great.

BTW, I join the others in wishing everyone a blessed and enjoyable Thanksgiving Day and safe travels.  Don't eat too much today!

A full belly laugh... with the emphasis on "full"...  Very, very nice indeed.  Makes my bet with CardinalAlum a few years ago seem trivial.

Any NCC fans making the trip up to the game tomorrow? it's going to be cold and windy saturday. It should be interesting on how it affects the Cardinals passing game.

For who ever is coming up, i hope they enjoy themselves and stay warm.
