From the Carthage website "In 2000, thanks to a major gift from David and Gael Romoser, a state-of-the-art AstroPlay surface was installed on Art Keller Field."

I had always heard about a 7 year life expectancy for artifical turf, but I am not any kind of expert.  Carthage's turf was looking a little worn this year.

I went to school with their daughter and they gave the money after she graduated.

Let's keep going with this...  When Santa came down the chimney this past Christmas, here are his CCIW stocking stuffers:

4.   Carthage – A Field Turf gift certificate, because Fanthrope "ripped it up" on Nov.

There will be new turf at Art Keller Field in '08

That is correct.  Does anyone know if it will be FieldTurf or GameDay grass?

Anyone of the redmen faithful, or anyone else know why Campbell University has replaced Valparaiso University as their first home game?  Carthage website says

"Carthage has made a change to its 2008 schedule.  Campbell University has replaced Valparaiso University as the Red Men's home opponent on Sept. 27, 2008.  Campbell, located in Buies Creek, N.C., is an NCAA Division I institution, NCAA Division I-AA non-scholarship for football, and the Fighting Camels are returning to gridiron for the first time since the sport was discontinued after the 1951 season.

Campbell is joining the Pioneer Football League in 2008 as the ninth member of that circuit.  The league's four charter members are Butler University, the University of Dayton, Drake University and Valparaiso.  The University of San Diego joined in 1992, followed by the 2001 addition of Davidson College, Jacksonville University and Morehead State University.  Carthage agreed to a Valparaiso request to schedule Campbell in 2008 in lieu of the scheduled-contest with the Crusaders.  Carthage will play Campbell only in 2008, and the Red Men will still make their scheduled trip to Valparaiso in 2009."

Anyone know why Valpo would make a request like that or why it would switch?

I'm betting that it's a gesture to honor Carthage's president.

Its actually not the Red Men's first home game, that is vs. Hope on September 13.  Not sure why the switch other than since Valpo had to add Campbell maybe they had to dump a non-conference game and Carthage accomodated.

All I know is we have played the "Poets", now we will play the "Fighting Camels."

How 'bout those Giants!

Safe to say there won't be a camel on the sideline during the game, but let me throw out a question, how many D1 football team mascots are animals and brought out before, during or on the sidelines of games?

Any guesses?

I actually debated between 4 and 7... I think NIU has a huskie out there too.

Mr. Ypsi

If anyone ever listened to me, there would be one more.  When Eastern Michigan dropped the Hurons (over the objection of the Huron Nation) and became (ho hum!) the 17,000th Eagles, I advocated for the obvious and unique: Emus!  With several emu farms (ranches?) in the area, a live mascot would have been easy.
