CCIW... that's funny because I was at the game and talked to Bethel fans afterwards who did not feel they lost because of the weather, but because they did not execute when they needed to like Wheaton did.  That seems to imply that Wheaton was the superior team because they did what Bethel couldn't.  If you argue that Bethel dominated the game statistically, you are completely oblivious to what is always important in games played under conditions like that; special teams and turnovers.  Usee already posted it but both teams were identical in total yards at 273 a piece, and wheaton was +2 in turnovers.  also, if Bethel was the superior team, why wasn't wheaton falling down as much as they supposedly were? I've always connected athleticism with being able to stay on your feet... don't think i'm that far off with that.

In football statistics this would be considered a J.O.P.!! Right Mugsy?  ;D

As a complete outsider who has only sifted thru the banter concerning the punt return, I have a question to the Bethel folks:

If you were so much superior, Wheaton could do nothing offensively and Ittersagen is the only legit athlete they had, why in the world did you punt it to him in the first place?

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

I was at the Wheaton/Bethel game wearing my very Chic 55 gallon garbage bag rain gear.  It was wet and my Royals just couldnt capitalize on opportunities when they needed to....they just couldnt hold on to the ball.  It was a great game to be at....everyone felt as if either team was about to make the big play on every single down.

I think Bethel's Coach Johnson properly framed the contest in his pre-game comments at the Alumni/Family get-together:

"Here's the deal...Win or lose, we're going to Jeno's after the game.  But, I am proud that today on that field there will be two schools ranked among the elite programs in the country who are decidedly 'Jesus Guys'!  It makes my heart cry with joy that, win or lose, all across the country the name of Jesus is going to be proclaimed with excellence today!"

Thats the post game critique on the Wheaton/Bethel game!

Mugsy and usee....

You guys are such homers.  I am s former Crusader, but I try to be objective.  Sure, the reason Pete could run one back with the block on was because of the field conditions.  Watch the film.  The kick team fell down all over the place while Pete just ran.  Eleven fumbles, a runback with the block on, the best athletes on the field cannot change direction without falling down, the team with a considerable advantage in stats loses the game....you tell me what happened.  Yes, it is my opinion that Bethel is a better team and it is a shame for the terrible field conditions (some poor design on the field to not get better drainage than that...ridiculous) to cost them the game.

No argument here... I'm a homer.  So is virtually everyone who posts here.

So where did I say in any post that Wheaton was a better team?  Where was I void of any thread of objectivity?

I merely stated that I don't think you can get an accurate gauge of the level to which one team was better than the other given the field conditions.  You began spouting some of the stats of where Bethel out performed Wheaton and then posted again and again (and again) how Ittersagen was lucky on his return.

Honestly... some people hang on to stats way too much.  Here are 2 of the most important stats of the game.  Bethel was a minus 2 on turnovers and scored 3 less points than Wheaton.  Bethel had turnovers at key points in the game when they had a chance to take control of the game.  When top 20 teams play against each other, turnovers play a key role in the outcome.  Was it luck or did Bethel fail to execute?  Sure Wheaton's offense was horrible and Bethel's defense looked great.  I never disagreed that Bethel had some outstanding talent and speed on their defense.  They stuffed Wheaton at the point of attack.  But Wheaton won the game on defense and special teams.

I just love the picture of ineptness you give regarding Bethel's punt coverage.  Why didn't Wheaton have problems covering punts?  Why weren't there several more punts returned?  Why weren't there more TD's because the defensive players were just falling down due to the field conditions and offensive players "know where they are going?"  Oh... that's right... it's because I'm a homer and I didn't watch the film.

I can just see it...

[Punt Coverage Team]:  "Sorry coach, it was really slippery out there and we just fell down."
[Special Teams Coach]:  "Well that's alright son, it's really wet out there.  I didn't expect you guys to stay in your lanes, fight off blocks, breakdown and make a tackle.  Besides... the return guy got lucky."

BTW: I just love the title of your original post - "Wheaton - Bethel Game Almost Meaningless".  Really?  It counts as one win or one loss to a team.  Furthermore it could have significant ramifications on playoff seeding or if a team even makes the playoffs.  The game was very meaningful, just like any game.
'

I object!  I most certaintly am not a "Homer."  I may be a d-bag...but I'm not a "Homer."  Just saying.
"Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything
that's even remotely true!"   Homer Simpson.

It looks like the Hanover-Butler game has been cancelled.  Send your thoughts to the residents of Hanover:

Butler Football Game With Hanover Cancelled
The Butler-Hanover football game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Butler Bowl has been cancelled due to significant storm damage that has impacted the Hanover community. The game will not be rescheduled this season.

Butler Director of Athletics Barry Collier spoke with Hanover Athletic Director Lynn Hall on Monday (Sept. 15) morning regarding the situation at the southeastern Indiana college and this weekend's football game.

"The Hanover area was hit by heavy storms that moved through Indiana on Sunday (Sept. 14), and Hanover College is currently without power and water," said Collier.

"Classes and extracurricular activities at Hanover have been cancelled, while they work to restore power and water, and the college will be closed until Sunday (Sept. 21). Right now, our thoughts are with Hanover, and we've offered to assist in any way that we can."

I don't think anyone should compare Pete Ittersagen to Jesus.  But Pete's dad runs a house painting company that uses college kids, College Craft.  Didn't Joseph found that company up in the Nazerath area?  I think Mary was the bookkeeper.  So there is a connection.

Jaybird,

You wouldn't have thought that  players win games by all the posters posting on what a loss it was for the Cards that Lester left. I agree with you. Players win games. Any defensive scheme can be successful. It depends on who you have on the field, carrying out the assignments, tackling and being fundamentally sound.
Indeed, Lester is a good coach. As you know, Wienke was the Cards  DC before Lester. Actually, Wienke's defenses were statistically better than Lester's. I think NT was probably as tired as I was with all the emphasis being put on Lester leaving NCC and how it was going to hurt the Cards. I am pretty sure NT's post was not a bash at all to Lester, but rather a compliment to Wienke for his defense playing so well after so many posters questioned whether they would play up to the level that they played the last couple of years under Lester. Am I right NT?

modified for spelling!

You are absolutely right, Cardinaldad.  I meant no disrespect to Lester, simply stressing that I think the Cards will be juuuuust fine without him.  My point was that I believe Wienke is a GREAT coach and really knows what he is doing.  Didn't intend for it to be taken any other way.  Apologies if it was.
