Elmhurst traditionally has been a commuter school, however within the last 10 years EC has made strong efforts to even out the commuters with permanent residents.  I was a Freshman in 1998 and since then EC has built 3 new dorms and the student body has almost doubled.

Yes, Carthage is Elmhurst's arch and greatest rival.  During my 4 years we had some pretty good battles.  It's the one game, I remember my teammates circling as the "had to win" game. ala Green Bay with the Bears.  Couple keys for Elmhurst-

1) Goes without saying that for Elmhurst to have a chance at the W, they NEED TO RUN THE BALL!  You have 3 backs so I hope EC tries to establish some rushing.

2) Penalties-  Over 200 yds in penalties the last 2 weeks, makes  life difficult.  We're halfway through the season and the penalties should be fewer and farther between.

3) Turnovers   similar to point #2 that you want to be forcing them and not coughing them up.

4) and probably the most important is getting a pass rush on the Carthage QB.  I see Carthage's QB likes to air the ball deep downfield and he has a full arsenal of WR's, which makes it really important for the DL to penetrate in the backfield.

Can Elmhurst win this game?  I think so, as they have the talent,  however the inconsistencies make me wonder which team is going to show up tomorrow.

Tailgater-  Can I assume you're going to be at your usual campsite in the meadow of Art Keller on the northwest side?

*Just a reminder that the Elmhurst vs. Carthage game can be heard online at http://www.wrse.com   or traditional radio on 88.7 FM  (locally)

I don't know how many go on the "Daily Dose", but some idiot ;) thinks Wheaton is on upset alert:

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

You guys keep mentioning the CCIW picks.....  where is that located ??

Definitely a game of interest - and I have Augustana as my fourth confidence pick.

Augie is traditionally tough at home.
Wheaton traditionally has tough games in Rock Island.

I think this could be a very close game and I think Augustana could win.

I am determined to be wise, but this was beyond me.

Well Son....since no one else has chimed in on your question I'll offer my thought. I'd have to say it won't happen this season (no disrespect intended). I do agree their best shot may be against Millikin. Until NP can develop a roster with a significant number of upperclassman and the experience that brings to the field it may be a while for them to crack the CCIW win column.... that is unless they have an amazing talented recruiting class soon. I don't see that materializing under current circumstances though.

Tailgater I'll try and stop by and say hello.... I'll be there cooking a large pot of chili!  then start consuming many many adult beverages on the hill!

Reidy.... See you on the 15th!

Another point is that you can't lurk in the Pick Ems section, you have to be logged in.

In the opinion of most Wheaton is the favorite in this game, if not solely based on the #6 ranking (which I still think is a bit too high).  As noted in the Daily Dose, Augie is just a play or two away from being undefeated as well, and most likely would have been ranked had that been the case.

But given the hard fought games between these two teams over the past 15-20 years, it certainly would not be much of an upset at all.  Particularly since the game is in Rock Island and Wheaton hasn't had too much success playing at Augie.

This should be a very exciting, hard fought contest.  I expect it to be very close.  I'm giving Wheaton the slight edge based on having a few more offensive weapons.  To me the real "upset" will be if this game is won by 10 points or more.

Although I have been highly entertained by reading the messages on this board for three years now, I am making my very first post so please be gentle with me.
I think that the competition in the CCIW this year is better than it has been for at least the past three years and should result in some very entertaining and well-played games.
(Still licking my wounds from last Saturday)
I look forward to an extremely fun football season and even more enlightening banter with you fellow posters.
(Now that I can do this, I can also voice my opinion on the CCIW)

Welcome to the board, Mr. Scalcucci. (Dad)  :)
As a little background, I can tell you that dad's son is, I believe, IWU's 3rd leading receiver this season. He was a standout athlete at Batavia HS, including being a good enough basketball player to draw college interest, including at least one other CCIW school.

I did not realize that the e-mail address is listed in the profile of the poster.  It takes a little away from the fun of posting when everyone knows who you are....

It does?

I don't judge those who choose to post anonymously. But I've always felt that if I have something to say on these boards, then I ought to take responsibility for my words by attaching my name to them. It's a good curb to any impulse I may have to post something that I'll regret later (although that doesn't always work ;)), and a good way to keep myself accountable.

Welcome DOAT.

Mr. Sager, maybe one day google will create something for message boards like they have created for their Gmail users!

Agreed.  Both should be very interesting and are key games towards CCIW title.

While a loss this week would be a setback for Wheaton, Augie and Carthage, I think it is much more significant for Elmhurst.  A loss against Carthage (giving them 2 conference losses) along with having IWU, Wheaton and NCC still to play, essentially eliminates Elmhurst.

Comet 14

Sorry jaybird it took me so long to reply to your question about the outcome of the Elmhurst vs Augie game. Busy week. It was a graet gamefor 3-1/2 quarters. In those 3-1/2 quarters Elmhurst certainly had chances to contend. I agree that the o'line was completerly outplayed, but it wasn't just 3 down linemen. Most the game Augie sent a linebacker from the week side of the formation. But the O'line should still be able to block 4 rushers. I also think there were a couple of curiouse calls on 4th down. Both plays in Augie territory with the game still in question. One 4th and less than a yard and Elmhurst ran a QB draw ( not sneak) I have never agreed with going backwards when you need  a yard or less. Later in the same quarter 4th and 1 and again we hand the ball off to the tailback ( no fullback ) 3 yards deep. That being said Augie deseved to win the game, Congrats to them.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   On to this week. I thinks the Wheaton vs Augie game will be very good but I think Wheaton will win. There Lines IMO are better than Elmhurst's. As far as the Elmhurst Carthage game I am hoping for a much better effort by the Bluejays. Not that they didn't play hard I just think they need to play smarter. Less turn overs and a lot less penalties. I hope everyone has safe travels to and from there games this weekend.

RE: NCC VS NPU----

Expect to see senior Kyle Kniss at quarterback for the Cardinals Sat against North Park rather than usual starter Aaron Fanthorpe. It appears Fanthorpe is not yet recovered from a deep knee bruise he suffered with less than a minute remaining in last week's game with Millikin. There is no structural damage in the knee, and Fanthorpe is expected to be at or very close to 100% for the 10/18 game vs. Carthage.

Thanks for the insight, AndOne.  Good idea for the Naperville School to play it cautious.  IMO Fanthorpe is what makes the team especially dangerous.  Interestingly enough, Kniss was the quarterback last year against Washington U, which the Cross Country School lost unexpectedly.  My guess is that North Park will see an even greater diet of Dominic Sulo than previously expected.

Comet14-  I too wondered and scratched my head why those pivotal 3rd and 4th down calls were made.  It's was almost as if EC was scared/timid to try and challenge the Augie defense on those series.  I felt- "what do you have to lose by trying?"  when you're down by 14-21 points?

I thought Elmhurst played hard, but as you mention not smart.  The turnovers and penalties are a result of lack of concentration and I hope EC can rectify those problems tomorrow.
