RE: The the above Redmen vs Red Men discussion:

The nambie-pambies at the NCAA ought to find more constructive things to do with their time than to issue a blanket condemnation of all Indian related logos/images as being offensive to Native Americans. Was there any record of any individual Native American or Native American group filing a complaint? I sincerely doubt that when the Carthage administration chose the name Redmen, they did so with any intent or even thought of demeaning Native Americans in any way, shape, or form.

I realize the CC President and trustees had to change the name for economic reasons and to avoid sanctions after being backed into a corner by the NCAA. I do think it was pretty clever just to separate the Redmen name and make it Red Men. However, rather than Red Men, how do our CC posters feel about Flames, given that a flame is part of the school seal?

I think its a sad day when the NCAA makes an issue out of a perceived rather that real offense. The people who should have been offended were the players, alums, and fans who proudly played for and cheered the Redmen. 

The name separation only put it back to it's original form. The Carthage community was included in the action that was taken. As for the flames I think there is an obvious objection. Hey look at those Flamers!!

I agree..... Flaming ..... Gay kinda the same thing.... Maybe not the right image for a football team.  

I liked the old logo better.  But I have to say the new one growing on me.  It think it is silly for the NCAA to worry about that stuff, don't they have better things to do?  I lived acrosse the hall (at Carthage) across from an indian dude straight off the reservation.  He thought that the logo was classy and represented Native americans in positive way.  He always said that most indian people did not care about little things like that.

I was a Knight in HS, BlueJay in College, and my current hockey team are the Chicago American Eagles.

Here is an interesting article (on multiple web pages) that was featured on ESPN earlier this week. An offensive lineman from DII Mesa State had broken his pinkie finger(similar to that of Tony Romo) and decided to amputate his pinkie finger in order to play out the rest of his senior year.

I might have done the same thing....hard to say unless it actually happened though.

Yipsi beat me to it. Back In high school (1984) My basketball team played in the Pekin Holliday tourny that was hosted in there gym and if I remember correctly that was about the time they changed the name to Dragons. I remember the painting on the gym wall of a large chinese Dragon.
