Congrats to NCC. A terrific playoff rep for the CCIW. Let's just hope the Cards are not seeded in the Mt. Union bracket.

Just returned from NC/Augie Game

It was just as it sounded on the game,  Nc got momentum in 2nd half, Augie came back with firepower.

Podulka is one of the shiftiest and most elusive quarterbacks I have seen...very tough to bring down.

Good win for the Cards today, the offense proved their abilities against statiscally one of the best defenses in the country...

Big game next week in Elmhurst, you know they will be ready, they always are for NC.

Congratulations to NCC. Not much question they were the CCIW's best this year. Good to see Augie move the ball on the ground as well as they did, but it looks like they just had no answer for the Cardinal offense. North Central has a good chance to have a nice playoff run since they shouldn't have to face Mount Union too early.

Congrats to NCC on the victory today against Augie and clinching the CCIW crown and playoff bid.  First game I've been able to see all year and was surprised by a couple of things.  First, I was surprised at the effectiveness of Augie's spread attack and was very impressed with Podulka.  I was also surprised at NCC's defense.  From everything I had read and heard about this defense, I truly thought that they would shut Augie down.  Obviously, that didn't happen.  What I wasn't surprised about was Augie's defensive scheme in this game.  It's getting pretty frustrating to continually watch Augie not even try to get pressure against NCC's offense and to be picked apart underneath.  For most of the game Augie was rushing 3 (4 with the occassional blitz) and had 6 defenders underneath with 2 deep safeties.  NCC continually had receivers wide open underneath because Augie's defenders were playing a spot rather than the man.  I realize NCC has a great offense, but, based on the last several years results, it's time to recognize that this scheme isn't working and they need to try something else.

I have to say that NCC is clearly the class of the CCIW this year.  However, what I saw today was not the 2nd best team in the nation.  The defensive performance that I witnessed today will not get it done in the playoffs against the top teams in the country.  From a rushing perspective, Augie was able to do pretty much what they wanted as evidenced by their 6.8 yards per carry average.  The Cardinal D will need to step it up in the playoffs, or we will see another CCIW team win one or two games and then get spanked by one of the power programs.

Mr. Ypsi:

What happened to your IWU team today?  It appears that Wheaton took their two weeks of frustration out on them today.  I thought IWU would give them a better game, even though Wheaton is still a very good team.  IWU not slouch.

As you probably already know, Hope/Alma game at Hope was postponed today (as were all athletic and other campus activities) due to closue of Hope's campus from a sever noro-virus outbreak.  County Health Dept. ordered closure of campus until Tues Nov 11 until decontamination can be done - required by law.  No word yet if the game is to be rescheduled - obviously only possible date would be Nov 22nd even though the playoffs start - neither Hope nor Alma will be involved in post-season play so it could be scheduled if the league and schools want to.  How that plays out, I have no info as yet.

So here's an interesting stat that Coach Thorne mentioned in the post game huddle today: not only has North Central defeated every opponent that they have played so far this season, but every single opponent has also gotten beat the week following their game against NCC as well!  I checked on it, its true.

Everything Stewie, I mean, FC says is true.  Podulka was unbelievable!  He gets my all conference vote.  We had him wrapped up, so I thought, MANY times and he would slither out.  He was very impressive. Cardinals got the job done, but gave up lots of rushing yardage.  Need to tighten that up before the big dance!  Take care of business at EC!!  Wenger looked banged up after the game....hopefully no big deal.  First outhright conference title in 48 years!!!  Way to go Cards!!

Peter,  I mean Mr. Herbert, I mean Quagmire....  Thanks for the backup

I will say this...there is no time that this NC team ever appears out of it.  I know this may sound weird because they are 9-0, but with the talent they have on offense, and ballhawking defense, they will be in most games till the end regardless of who they play.

You think Thorne will finally earn Coach of the Year now? It's only taken three straight CCIW titles and four consecutive playoff appearances ...

I personally think he should have won it his first year in 2002. He took a program went 3-7 the year before and finished 6-4 (the most wins at the school in 15 YEARS!) with their third string quarterback starting. The Cardinals also had comeback victories in three of the last four games to get that winning record.
