Wow, Wheaton gets in so congrats to both teams.  Really what this also means is that Elmhurst was 1 win (either NC or IWU) away from getting into the playoffs.  Had Elmhurst beat either one, they would have been identical to Wheaton, and probably would have been sent due to head-to-head battles.  Great for Wheaton and great for Elmhurst to see and know that the Bluejays program has climbed the ladder.

I would say, yes... Elmhurst would have had a chance to get a Pool C had they finished 8-2, but... Elmhurst does not have a playoff resume.  I believe that played the #1 factor as to why Wheaton received a bid this year.

I'm not sure Elmhurst would have received the same consideration.

Mr. Ypsi

A moment of silence for Wooster.  In the final (published) North region rankings they were 8th (2nd only to Otterbein among pool C hopefuls) while Wheaton was unranked.  Yesterday Wooster crushed 7-2 Wittenberg while Wheaton crushed 5-4 Carthage.  Yet, clearly, Wheaton must have jumped Wooster in the (secret) final, final rankings.  I don't get it. ???

OK, moment of silence is over - I'm absolutely delighted that Wheaton made it in! ;D

Let's have a regional final rematch! ;)

I think Wabash losing hurt Wooster. they had .577 OWP and a .479 OOWP. wheaton had .565 and .559. Also, Norm Eash is on the North Region committee and we all know what a Swider fan he is!!  ;)

Agreed.  The poor showing by Wabash on Saturday rippled across the North region.

As pointed out over on the MIAA board... first round game is an all Thunder match up.   ;D

Except most Norm haters aren't from Wheaton.  I believe that goes to Carthage & NCC.

Congrats to Wheaton for getting in!

As it was explained to me at the time it came out, the OWP/OOWP measure for "strength of schedule" was created to replace the old Strength of Schedule Index (SOSI) in order to better recognize teams from strong conferences.  SOSI basically just tracked with in-region winning %.

We saw the impact of the OWP/OOWP system last year in basketball, when Wheaton received a Pool C bid over some teams with better in-region records.  Today I think Wheaton College and the CCIW are one of the beneficiaries of the change again.  Clearly the CCIW is not as relatively strong in football as it is in basketball, but it is still a very good football league.  And we now know Wheaton was ranked higher by the regional committee than College of Wooster, and I assume that was due to OWP/OOWP.

Next September, remember how important those in-region non-conference games are for the CCIW's Pool C chances.

Mugsy beat me to it. The Trine Thunder v The Wheaton Thunder......

My philosophy (shared by some, perhaps not all) is that once the conference battles are over, I'm a CCIW fan.  Go Cards and (Wheaton, not Trine) Thunder!

Even though Wheaton's non-conference opponents had off years, all 3 were recent playoff teams, including a semi-final team from last year (Bethel).  Wheaton will continue to schedule tough opponents in their non-conference schedules.

Wow! With the bears playing like they did; at least there is some good news that comes out of today!

This same situation did wonders for the Wheaton basketball team last season, and hopefully it will spark new life in the thunder football team as well.  They both thought they were going home and like they say, you don't truly appreciate something until it is taken away.  Well they all thought the playoffs were "taken away" from them, so to say, and were ready to move on.  Now with the talent they have, and a new appreciation for where they are at, this could be a great recipe for the Thunder.  It's not easy sledding to get to the third round, but it is very doable.  definitely looking forward to a Wheaton/NCC rematch!

Usee, does this mean you will be referring to the cardinals by the nicknames you have given them from here on out??
