Interestingly, the penalty for Carthage was their opponent got to host. I also remember Augustana used to play some playoff games at the local HS during their run in the 80's. Their field was really bad at the end of the year.

Augie played nine playoff games (9-0) at Rock Island Public Schools Stadium from 1982-87. I don't think the NCAA required wireless internet at that time.  ;)

I think the only playoff game they played at Ericson Field during that time was a 22-21 win over Adrian in 1983 and the field was a mess.

Quite obviously I'm new to the board.  I would just like to say congrats to the Cards on a record setting season.  I believe that this team keeping the "new" tradition of winning alive is going to make the CCIW a more exciting conference year in and year out.  It was a joy to watch the Cardinals play their type of football this season.  They are the true definition of a team, and I believe that they are going to come out firing next year.  I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what the Cards are going to do next season.

With that said, I want to say "Got get 'em Thunder."  You're going to have your hands full with Rupp.  But I have faith that you guys can shut down their offense.  Go CCIW.

Welcome aboard Crutches. I hope this doesn't mean you are an NCC supporter? I was hoping for a Millikin rep or maybe even another Elmhurst poster. See what you can do.

To clarify your post, there will be no "shutting down" of Franklin's offense with Rupp at the helm. I think Franklin is going to get their yards and their points. Wheaton should be focused on getting a few stops and controlling the ball with their offense. If both teams are scoring in the 20s and 30s wheaton has a chance. If this game is a 40-50pt slugfest it doesn't bode well for the Thunder IMO.

How is this high school field that the game has been relocated to?  Pat, I know Franklin is the better seed, I guess my question is- if Franklin's field is not in game day shape,  why wouldn't they play the game at Wheaton, or another college close to Franklin?  Kind of goes along the lines of Carthage a few years ago, where their press box wasn't "ready" and they were denied a home game?  Just curious but I hope the field does not hinder the play on Saturday.

I know Carthage was not able to host because their pressbox did not meet NCAA Playoff standards.  I do not know for sure, but I believe the main thing wrong was no high speed internet hook up.  So if the High school stadium press box has those things they should be fine.

However I doubt that franklin is dumb enough to not look into the rules and if they can play the game there.

It couldn't host because the "press box" sat about three people.
True dat! I've been in bigger deer stands.
Was that the only reason?
Not sure, but I thought that carthage had to go on the road rather host at a school near by because of a paperwork issue.... Pat? ???

You make a valid point.  Rupp is too good to shutdown.  I should have chosen my words more carefully.  I definitely agree that they need to hold Franklin under 30.  If Wheaton can hold them under 30, they will win.  There's no doubt in my mind.  I just hope the DB's have a great game.  The only problem is that you can't really defend a perfectly placed ball and Rupp has the tendency to do that.  I've never seen a quarterback at the D III level throw a ball like he can.  I don't mean to harp on this subject...but he is a ridiculous athlete.

It keeps getting mentioned (and at times it seems like everyone is dancing around the issue) but did Carthage have the option of finding an acceptable site to play their "home" playoff game at (i.e. nearby college or high school field) OR was the right to host that playoff game taken away from them since their facilities didn't meet the minimum standard?

And by no means am I suggesting that Wheaton be given the right to host this weekend's playoff game!  They're like "butter" in Indiana this season!!  ;D

New Tradition that's a good point and yes, it does sound more like a ballad you would hear at a county fair, as a opposed to a fight song to get your troops to fight.

I remember an EC/Carthage game not too long ago where it was really gusty and you could just feel the pressbox shaking in the wind.

I am sure Rupp is ridiculously good. I am looking forward to seeing him. I have seen a lot of great D3 qb's (and many I have not seen) so we will see how he stacks up.

Would you NCC guys say he is better than Kam Kniss? I think Kam is one of the better qb's the CCIW has seen over the years. There are many others outside the CCIW that are "best" all time.

I think that's where the paperwork issue came in.  They could not host because of the press box, but didn't file paperwork soon enough to get the game moved to a nearby location.  I know that in '06, Concordia Wisconsin did not have hosting capabilities due to facilities, so the playoff game vs. NCC was played at Wisconsin Lutheran.

IMO, Kam was a great quarterback.  Kam was fast, smart, and had a great arm.  He was a team player and had some good tools to use.  But I definitely think Rupp is better.  He makes very smart decisions and protects the ball.  He makes his reads, and knows his offense like the back of his hand (hence the coaches allowing him to call his own plays).  He also does not try to force things.  It may appear that he is, but everything that he "forces" ends up in a reciever's hands.  An open reciever to Rupp is pretty much an open reciever in the pros, meaning that the reciever needs less than a step and Rupp will deliver it.  Rupp just has better tools, he's bigger, quicker, and has a better arm.  Not to take anything away from Kam and what he did, but Rupp gets the job done and done well.

It was also about 4 feet off the ground on the visitors side of the field, if I recall correctly.

I wouldn't say he is "better".  He is very good, if not great.   I actually think they are very comparable.  Rupp missed a couple of guys running wide open that Kam wouldn't have missed, but IMHO, Rupp probably has a stronger arm. (that one is going to cost me!)  :D
