I'm guessing that the size that school (700 total students) must hurt too.  I mean, at Linfield you have about 1500 students and about 10% of them try to make the team which gives you quite a selection.  Menlo has less guys to pull from so their odds for having good players is reduced.

Menlo has 79 players on its roster. I thought that was an impressive number for a school with only 700 students.

Menlo has 3 quarterbacks, all freshmen, which struck me as odd. None of them were capable of moving the ball against Oxy. PC and KM wrote in Kickoff:

QuotePressure is on: Quarterback Gregg Parker. After splitting time with Adam Hazel last season, Parker has the position going into this season. His ability to adjust to full time starter will be key for Menlo.

Parker was also mentioned in a season preview article in the San Francisco Chronicle:

QuoteMenlo College made significant strides last season, going from 0-10 in 2005 to 4-6, but the Oaks, a Division III team, have a lot of rebuilding to do.

Picked by the coaches to finish sixth in the seven-team Northwest Conference, the Oaks open their season Friday in Menomonie, Wis., against Wisconsin-Stout. Their biggest game is the Oct. 27 home game against Division III powerhouse Linfield.

Senior Gregg Parker assumes the starting quarterback role. He was not the regular starter last season, but got plenty of action and completed 50 percent of his passes.

Parker played in Menlo's first game against UW-Stout. He was 7-for-18 passing for 95 yards, and rushed for 51. After the Stout game, Parker no longer appeared on the Oaks' roster.

Interesting point Bob--It is odd how Parker just disapeared.  No mention of injury, transfer, or other news...

The Cats close loss to Divsion II Western Oregon seems to be a little easier to accept today (as easy as any loss is easy to accept).  Western Oregon loss a close one yesterday to the #13 Division IAA team in the country (Cal Poly) 24-17.  It was WOU's first loss of the season.

I want to say d3football did a fairly lengthy story on Menlo a few years ago.

Same head coach throughout.

They had Nate Jackson at wide receiver (he's a Denver Bronco now) and Zamir Amin at quarterback when they were good.

Pat, nfl.com lists Jackson as having attended Menlo College (J.C.). I don't know if this means he at one time played at a J.C. and then transferred to Menlo, or just that they are clueless about Menlo and don't know that it is not a J.C.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

I believe Menlo was a JC until fairly recently (like in the last 10 years maybe)

No my bad---for the past 21 years.  They had some 4 year programs prior to that but went fully 4 year in 1986 which does not explain why the NFL says Menlo JC..

Tux,

You may have had your car radio on the Bearkitties/SOU post game show but just in case......they interviewed the Bearkitties Defensive Coordinator.  They turned their attention to the next game.......Linfield.  The DC said something like "I'm not concerned about their running game because they appear to have abandoned that portion of their offense....I just need to figure out how to stop Trevor Scharer and that potent passing game".

Guess it's time to unveil the 300 yard running game to go with the 500 yard passing game!

Was looking at Willamette's roster.  They have some big boys on the team but most of them are not starters.  Still, I think the challenge for the Cats this week will be for the Cat D-line to win the battle against a pretty good sized BearCat O-Line.  Willamette is not a big passing team so the lack of pressure the cats have had may not hurt as much.  But they are going to need to get penetration to disrupt running game.  Offensively we'll be fine (I said it last time and I think I was correct).  I'd love to see the Cats establish more of a running game, but if the Bearcats can't stop Sherer and the passing game then we won't need much of a running game again this week.  Any thoughts from those who have seen Willamette play this year?

Does anyone have video of this play?

It is featured on the NCAA web site.

As coincidence would have it, last night a different team from Iowa was involved in a play where some people stated there was an ill-timed whistle blown. While playing Wisconsin, the Badger's RB broke a big play and was heading for the end zone. At the 3 yard line, an Iowa player knocked the ball loose and a number of different players nearly recovered it. It ended up in the hands of the Wisconsin center in the back of the end zone, and the Badgers were awarded a touchdown. However, after the officials reviewed the play, it was determined there was an inadvertent whistle, so the ball was placed back at the 3 yard line and the touchdown call was reversed.

I do not know what to tell you. Parker wasn't there yesterday. Near the end of the game it struck me that he wasn't there against Oxy either. I will try to remember to ask next game, in two weeks. As I said in my previous post, Menlo seems to have some problems holding on to kids for more than one or two seasons. #10 yesterday showed signs of playing like Parker. Had several big runs but made some poor decisions on passes.

Wyd,

Tough news about Kelly. I hope Gordon is able to come back. We all hate to see these injuries.

Speaking of injuries, this may only interest the Whitworth fans, but one of the Whitworth players had gotten in a pretty bad car wreck friday night, and played saturday with stitches in his head.  I don't know if the kid is tough, stupid, or both but I'm glad to hear he's ok.
