(Please excuse the length but the story is worth sharing)

OAS,

I already had my shot at a million dollar prize and I blew it.  I swore off all lottery and lottery-like game since then.

I don't like telling this story very much however I've moved on so I feel I can share it now.......

Back in summer of 2001 my finance (now Mrs. 11) and I took a vacation down to Northern California to the Auburn area.  We're lucky enough that Mrs. 11's Uncle and Aunt have a beautiful house on a piece of lakefront property.  They are great people and nice enough to let us have the house for 4 days by ourselves.

The vacation was going great.  We were taking the boat out on the lake; take some kayaks trips on the water, just enjoying ourselves.  On the second night we decide to get a pizza and some magazines and bring them back to the house to enjoy a dinner outside with the sun setting.  Mrs. 11 picked up an Oprah mag and I pick up a Sports Illustrated.

I'm going though the S.I. and I come across a full-page ad for McDonald's 2001 version of their Monopoly game.    You all know the game.  You get a large coke or fries at McDonalds and it comes with two game pieces.  Well, I go to McDonald's often and I know that they like to tease people with the "Boardwalk" game piece (one half of the 1 million dollar prize piece with the other being "Park Place").  So, when I saw this full-page ad in S.I., it had two of these game pieces on the page.  I pulled them off and one was "Baltic Ave" and the other was "Park Place".

My mind started to wonder...."Now do they always give you "Park Place" or "Boardwalk" to tease you?".  I decided to keep "Park Place" so I just set it down on the kitchen counter and didn't think much about it.

The next day, Mrs. 11 and I went out on the lake in the morning for a couple of hours and on our return we saw that here Aunt and Uncle came home a day early.  Mrs. 11's Aunt in a neat freak and by the time we came back in the house, everything was picked up and spotless...including the kitchen counter were my "Park Place" game piece was.  Now again, I wasn't sure if "Park Place" was the teaser they give you or one half of the winning $1 million dollar prize.  I just decided not to make a big deal of it and not go though her trash, figuring that what are the chances that I had a legit shot at a $1 million dollar prize?

Well, about two weeks later I was in Newberg and decided to get a coke at the McDonald's.  Monopoly was still going on but I wasn't paying it too much attention.  I pulled off the game pieces and one was a Railroad and the other..."Boardwalk".  I just sat there for a minute looking at the game piece.  I kept telling myself...."You had the 'Boardwalk' piece in California and not the "Park Place".  I called Mrs. 11 to confirm that thought.  "Honey, down at your Uncle's house did I have "Park Place" or "Boardwalk" for the Monopoly game?"  Mrs. 11 said.  "You had 'Park Place'...why?"

That is why I swore off all games of chance, because I had my shot and blew it!   ;)

ouch that hurts, thanks for sharing though

Looks like Linfield was unfortunately dealt their first accolade blow this morning.  BE did not end up on the list for Unitas Golden Arm finalists despite being the best QB in Oregon (Kellen Clemmens was named to the list).

I bet if Lewis and Clark had not quit their season he would be there...the loss of the projected 12 TD's he was going to throw against them probably hurt. ;D

The finalists are all pretty expected...Leinert, Clemons, the qb from Northwestern....wait....what?

scroll to the bottom for a 'cat mention. Then look for the falsehood regarding the butcher.

I wouldn't say Elliott is better than Clemens. The UO QB is surpassing all UO school records and playing great against top-flight competition every week. He's not feasting on D3 teams with slow DBs, he's playing great against 4.3/4.4 DBs in the Pac-10 and eluding quick defensive linemen.

Do you REALLY think Elliott would get picked in any kind of draft ahead of Kellen Clemens? Elliott is darn good, but he's not the best QB in Oregon.

frank uible

Pro Prospects Preview, a publication of Pro Football Weekly and an accurate predictor on an historical basis (as far as predictors go), puts Clemens at #13 (with a grade of 4.95) in its preseason assessment of QBs for the 2006 draft and Elliott at #16 (4.85). An ostensibly close call which easily could reverse itself by the time the draft comes.

I still agree with woufan. Clemens throwing for 450+ vs d1 competition (albeit UW) is more impressive than Elliot numbers vs d3 db's. I have a feeling that the 'cats still might be defending d3 champs if Elliot had stayed and Clemens had arrived.

When I checked out the link I found it very humurous that there was ad at the top for the McDonalds Monopoly Contest (#11?)

Just had to throw that in!
Go Cats!

Great catch on the falsehood, Spirit.  I just sent a note off to Dennis Dodd regarding the error.....

I've seen both play this year in person , Both guys are having good seasons, but with the game on the line, I've got Elliott not Clemens in the game! IMHO ;D.....  Beancounter Happy 25 yrs!!!!
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
