For any Linfield fans coming to Abilene next September, let me encourage you to arrive on Friday.

Please take in a high school football game on Friday night.  I can direct you to a great game for almost anyone's taste.

Have a steak at the Perini Ranch, literally a 5-star (food) dining experience.  The Chef at Perini Ranch cooked for Vladimir Putin when he came to Texas in 2001.

On Saturday, take in Historic Buffalo Gap, 15 minutes south of Abilene, and then go to Frontier Texas, the museum in downtown Abilene.

The football will be excellent and the HSU hosts will make you feel at home.

I agree Ralph.
Two years ago my wife and I arrived on a Friday, we didn't make a high school game , but we did eat at Perini Ranch--EXCELLENT! We also went to the Sunday morning outdoor swap meet in Buffalo Gap, everything from live animals to zwieback. The before game tailgate was outstanding and the local bbq was the best.

A little Abilene history : Fess Parker, Hardin-Simmons University. Played football at HSU before transferring to University of Texas. Starred in TV series Daniel Boone (1964-1970).

I do not like the idea of going back to abilene, either for the team or myself. I would not encourage anyone to go after my last trip there.

Hey, 86, what didn't you like about Abilene?  ?While anywhere in Texas is a long way from anywhere, I rather enjoyed the trip. Interesting town and history, really nice campus.
I think there was a drum that ruined it for him....

I agree, that drum, actually an empty 50 gal. container, was terrible. The players could not hear in the huddle or on the line of scrimmage.
I believe there is a ncca rule about banning artificial noise makers during games. Seems like it was overlooked by the coaching staff/officials.
Only one drum?   When the Warhawks played UMHB at their field in 06, the end zone bleachers were full of students banging containers especially when our QB was trying to call plays at the line of scrimmage!  The loudest environment I have watched a game in at the D-III level.  Couldn't believe it was allowed and it apparently is done and allowed conference wide if HS does it also.  The WIAC does not allow noise makers during live play so when the Cru came to the Perk this season twice, the announcement regarding that rule was made quite often over the P.A.  ;)  I am not sure but I think the NCAA rule banning them only applies to play-off games since those are the games they pay for and control.

Ralph Turner,

Thanks y'all for the suggestions. I enjoyed Abilene two years ago and look forward to a visit with the Cats next fall. This time, however, I'd prefer a win for my wily Cats!  ;D

Guess my hearing (and/or memory) must be going faster than I thought. I heard the drums at the game two years but had no idea they created a dysfunctional situation for the Cats.

Proud Papa Joe,

That's a big assumption vs. Whitworth.....

Toivo,

No, no, no.....when you beat a team 18 straight times then it's a big assumption...but when the Rats have squeaked out two well earned wins then it's just a matter of time before Linfield will own the series again and 2008 sounds like a good start for that to happen again.

Trinity won the money  for the best play from Pontiac.com.  Way to go d3football enthusiasts!!  It 's great to see the support for d3 football, isn't it?

Yes, it is, and I'm glad they won it. That play was one for the ages, and You Tube.

Wilcat 11,

I don't think I'm the only who feels that the tide may be turning....yes only two seasons in a row, but Whitworth is definitely at the point of being competitive year in and year out.  We beat PLU for the first time in 2001 since 1969, and have won 6 out of the last 8 vs. them....not saying this will happen with Linfield, but PPJ can't assume a win vs. anybody.

I'll agree that Whitworth has built themselves up to the point of being in the mix year in and year out since the decade began.

On your point that PPJ can't assume a win vs anybody all I have to say is "Lewis and Clark" to dispel that statement.  ;)

Toivo70

Good call Wildcat 11,

We need Lewis and Clark to get off the ground and get running or start another Oregon school with a program....

Very sad news for all the Linfielders out there.  Reports from Campus today is that the Old Oak fell over and is no longer.

Linfield had been working on the historic oak this past year but the old tree couldn't hang on.

****Update:

Here is the article that just came out on the Newsregister

Wildcat11....I haven't heard about that. I will proceed over there 1st thing in the morning to see what happened. That's very sad though......I believe that the Old Oak is mentioned in the Linfield alma-mater as a symbol of hope and courage.

Toivo70..... I agree that Whitworth is able to win any game they play. That's good for the conference. Every game Linfield plays I know we can win also. That's the tradition and I'll take ours over yours any day.

Proud Papa Joe

 ??? ??? ???

Sorry to here the big oak fell. 250 years is a long time. weird that it would happen on the 150th anniversary of the college. Now lets talk more football.

Toivo 70

I am sticking with my assumption. Linfield is going to come out on top agianst whittworth. You may not have heard but Linfield is going to be a running machine this year. So watch out NWC. The automatic bid is at stake.
