"I'm never intimidated by Linfield.  (They) kind of give me a challenge to prove that we're just as good as they are, that this is D-III football and there's nothing better than us."

Rory Lee, UPS Running Back after Linfield beat UPS in Tacoma 35-16 last season
The Trail, UPS student newspaper

Rory, that's great that you're not intimidated by Linfield but I think the Loggers failed in the challenge to prove that UPS is as good at the Wildcats.  That had to be one LONG bus trip home.

Great job 'Cats on the impressive showing today.  UPS is a better program than four years ago but they are still not in Linfield's class.  Not even close.

Congrats to the 'Lutes on the win over SOU.  Keeping the hope of their winning season streak alive.

Having seen the Occidental/Redlands game...
Maybe it's the missing baker's dozen lights trying to shine on the new OXY field that provided the charm but I suspect it's the experience that Occidental carries with them this year that let them walk away with a win in the Redlands game.
OXYCollins did about 25 of 40 for 300 yards but couldn't quite get his high-steppin', quick feet loose for any serious yardage to put Redlands away.
OXY allowed the Bulldogs to earn 4 shots 26 yards from the end zone in the last 30 seconds; one of which actually was a touch that should have been caught.
Both teams scored when the opponents db fell down.
Redlands did not go for a 4th and 4 inches on about the OXY 26 when the score was tied in the 3rd. They needed the momentum.
Redlands fumbled the ball deep in their territory and OXY scored.

11 you still there?
Ever come across a pre-season magazine called Touchdown Illustrated?
I got you a copy tonight at the QXY game. I had never seen the Elliott arcticle before.

What a great win today by the CATS as always by game time the sun was out and the purple frisbees began to fly!!!  6 TD's by the Butcher in a little more than a half.  We'll see if it makes the front page.  The defense is gearing up for the playoffs.  Great job today and great to see the honories at homecoming that made this streak & winning tradition possible.

Sorry to see another streak come to an end ;D  Speaking of streaks.....Trinity (Conn's) consecutive winning streak can't be compared to Linfield's current winning streak (shouldn't you have to compete in post season????) Of course as always this is IMHO.
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

I had an outside chance to make it to the Menlo game but that has now gone the way of other years.

Gee...I wish I only had to travel from AZ to OR ::)

I also have an outside chance to see the Stagg this year as my mom lives in Alexandria, VA...but I am not holding my breath.
Don't forget your booties cause it's cold out there!

'Cats Fa Natic

To think I was a little worried about UPS yesterday...

I feel much better about the Cats after yesterday. They really looked like champion players yesterday. Until then, I felt they were slogging along, playing down to the level of their opponents.  I missed that winning attitude.  They were sloppy the last couple games but came out firing.  Good for the Cats.

And wasn't that just fun to watch...?
{Clever sign-off goes here.}

Great job Cats.  Domination AGAIN.
All ups had was alot of bark and no bite. I think they found out that you have to do more than TALK a good game against the Cats.  The Cats looked crisp in a phases of their game.  They are rounding into shape for the post season run.  You have to believe that one of the goals this year was to be more well rounded on offense.  The Butcher and the boys are awesome, but I really like the emerging run game.  As for the big D.  Props to coach Smith for the job he has done with the Cat D.  They are truly the difference makers for the Wildcats.  I saw at least 4 helmets fly off of UPS players yesterday--Were the Cats hitting or what  :o
On a more personal note, I really enjoyed coming into town early and playing golf with the boys , the tailgate action was the best.  There were some classic good ole day stories pregame.  My personal fav was from Mrs Coco.  I promised her that I will keep it off the board ( for now) but my opinion is that it is money !!!!!  Cracked me up again a classic.
Hey 11 thanks for the update  on the Butcher.
See you all in a couple of weeks-  I will be there with MOJO and Longies ( high octaine of course)

Just a few notes....

--For those of you who were keeping track of the Cats by internet yesterday, the most encouraging thing that can be passed along was how sharp the Wildcats were on offense yesterday.   We've set some high expectations.....expectations were certainly met yesterday.   Ort and Olson were both outstanding defensively against the run for Linfield.

--Rather interesting to see the UPS guys get off the buses yesterday a couple of hours before the game and survey the situation at Maxwell Field.   Their body language told me they had not seen a situation quite like Linfield has going...both in atmosphere and facilities since their last visit here two years ago.

--Hats off to Tyler Kaluza.   His deep TD came when UPS was playing cover three zone....yep, he still got past a UPS secondary that didn't have the athletes to keep up with Linfield.   Seemed like the Loggers didn't take the guy very serious.   Serious mistake as it turned out.

--Comparing the Lutes and Loggers, we now know how the glaring reason why UPS beat PLU.   Tough to lose a game when you're plus seven in turnover margin.  PLU was certainly more athletic than UPS.    Congrats to the Lutes for the win over SOU.  PLU at Willamette this Saturday ought to be interesting.

--Nice job digging up that Rory Lee quote WC11.  Always nice to look in the rearview mirror at silly talk.  Quotes in the game story in the Tacoma paper this morning are a bit more realistic.......too bad Allen Moody didn't chase down Rory Lee for a post game quote.

Bean,

Spot on with all of your thoughts.  Super sharp offense, great defensive effort (again).

I want to point out the great job the Linfield kickoff team did.  The field position was big in allowing the defense to pin UPS down deep and give the 'Cat offense all the space they needed.  Great job on Dailey's deep kicks and those wedge busters that BLEW UP the Logger wedge all game long.  Reminded me of some of the 'Cats playoff games last year.

BTW,  if any you ever wondered what is on the Butcher's wall.  Here's a close up view of his "wall of fame".

OK, I promised my fellow tailgaters that I would relay portions of todays Tacoma News Tribune article on the Cat UPS game.

Headlines were as follows in bold print
Loggers out of answers against Linfield
UPS "outclassed, outplayed, out-hustled and out-coached" by defending national champs

thats a nice start, agreed

"They're a much better team than we are." UPS coach Phil Willenbrock said   duh I say.

"We thought if we could get some first downs going we could shorten the game, but that wasn't the happening"  " They're just do darn good on defense."

Heck I could have told them that !! coach just give me a call next time and you can PHONE IT IN.

" the frustating thing is we had guys covered, but Brett throws a perfect ball and his guys don't drop any."  "Brett's  obviously a couple of steps above Joel (huh ???) (in reality Joel couldn't carry the Butchers gym bag)and Joel is a great Division III Quarterback (  ;D holy crap batman what game did you watch)  Brett is off the charts.   and on and on and on.

Its a great day to be a Wildcat  ( especially if you live in my town)

NWC Nation,

Here's a nice write up of the Ohio Northern victory over Mt. Union yesterday you may find of interest http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2200833
I found on the OAC board.

As we take pride in our 50 in 05 the Polar Bears can certainly take pride in their exciting victory yesterday.

Linfield's student newspaper ran a special edition on Linfield's 50 years of winning seasons.

Two current Wildcats, Brett Elliott and Casey Allen, wrote two quick articles in the edition of the paper.

Wilcat 11...I found out in a Google search that K-Mack mentioned "Some of you might be familiar with Touchdown Illustrated — it's stuffed into game programs at a number of schools, even some D-III schools. Why, I'm not sure. They seem to care little about Division III (polls)" in Around the Nation sometime back.
LINFIELD has the Catdome, #1 defending National Champions, 4 or 5 2005 All-Americans, 50 winning seasons going for it this fragmented season but no slick insert for the home football program . We musta passed.
I will send some to K Bird with your moniker on them.

GHC,

Yes, please do keep my comments from the tailgate off the board! Also, we were sorry that you and Mrs. GHC didn't join the continuation of the post-game tailgate out of town.  It was great!

On another note, I sure hope Ty Stanley's parents were at the game yesterday to see his two INTs.

Old Habits Die Hard!!!
Looks like the pollsters are still in a "state of schock" and can't believe ONU beat Mt. Union.....latest poll is out and they ranked Mount at #6 and ONU at #11.....reading the article of the game ONU clearly won the game from the start to the finish and probably should be ranked above Mt. Union!  The Polar Bears, I'm sure are disappointed after the great effort to prove they were better than Mt. Union.
