Exciting game, and difficult loss. Not spotting them 14 points with the turnovers might have resulted in a different outcome. Still, credit to Hardin-Simmons who capitalized on the fumbles with 2 TDs while we could only manage a field goal after their gift to us.

When is the last time Willamette, PLU & Linfield ALL lost their starting QBs in the 1st game of the season to pretty bad injuries (season ending in some cases)?

Pat, is the medical redshirt rule still that you only play roughly 1/3 of the scheduled games or less in the season (along with documenting the season ending injury, of course)?

Looks like there are some key players in the league this year that might be looking at it.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Exactly...sleep and 1AM flights have nothing to do with putting the ball on the ground twice.  Redlands is no HSU but we used to fly in there day of and get it done.

First, a big thank you to MonroviaCat for the text updates. I kept menlodaddio13 and a few other updated. I was pumped as I left the game as the Cats were up and had my enthusiasm dashed as I drove home when I got word of the final. Tough injuries, but to travel to Texas, have injuries to two key players and still have a chance to win against a very good football team, bodes well, to me, for the rest of the season.

Chapman is a pretty good team. Very quick and they easily out played the bigger and slower Menlo team. Angel Molina started at QB and was not impressive, Tony Rehn came in late and drove the Oaks to their only score. They also gave some playing time to a freshman QB. The big wide reciever / punt returner Willis for Menlo got hurt. A shoulder injury of some type.

I'd have to give Whitworth a grade of C+ for today's game.  A performance with a lot of rough edges.

First the good:  Brandon Martin was nothing short of dominating in the middle of the defensive line.  He will be a pain for any team Whitworth faces this season.

Overall the young defense looked really good.  La Verne's only points came after interceptions set them up deep in Whitworth territory.  ULV was otherwise unable to sustain much offense all day.

Anderson was strong as expected running the ball.  Broke many tackles, but worked really hard for his yards.  Milton Nelson will prove to be a very good back up, providing a slightly different look than Anderson.

Now the so-so: Kory Kemp was not sharp at QB.  His two picks led directly to both ULV touchdowns.  He is still mobile enough to get out of trouble and scramble for first downs, but he missed some open recievers.  But that may be because...

The receivers had a sub-par day, other than big TE VanHoommissen.  It will probably take some time for this group to get on the same page as Kemp.  I had to use the program to know who a lot of these guys were.

The offensive line was okay, but not as dominating as I thought they might be.  Whitworth did run for a lot of yards, but Kemp was under more pressure than I expected him to be.

Last year the team struggled the first week, then greatly in week 2.  Hoping for the same thing this year.  They will have to play better to win at Redlands.

Sorry to hear about so many guys around the NWC suffering injuries this week.

Menlo - Chapman game pics have been posted.

I thought Menlo would be better...I guess they suck...again.
Be grateful for Menlo and L&C, etc.

The NWC has the Pool A bid!  ;)

No...I want them to beat non conference opponents.  :'(

Not that I think Menlo is any good, but I do think they played a pretty good team today.  Chapman had a decent team last year and by all accounts should be as good, if not better this year.
Go Cats!

Chapman is much better than the Stout team I saw last week. I posted this on the SCIAC Board.
QuoteChapman is a pretty good team. Very quick and they easily out played the bigger and slower Menlo team. QB Eric Marty looked good, making good reads and often hitting his second and third reciever. RB Mike Christensen had 108 yds rushing. Wide reciever Chris Langstaff impressed me too. He had 4 catches for 93 yards running good patterns. He also likes to hit rather than be run out of bounds, he turned, droppede a shoulder and layed a lick on a Menlo DB. He also had a nice return of the second half kick off. Looks like they may be a fun team to watch this year.

The good news:  Cats have two weeks to make adjustments and get ready for an SOU team that likes to throw the ball and has had a lot of trouble with turnovers.  While they gave SacState "a scare" today they really were outgained signifcantly and turned the ball over 3 or 4 times.  I think it should be a similar matchup to the team we faced today (at least in the fact that they like to put the ball in the air).

Man...after today's loss 2 weeks to wait for the next game really sucks!  Should be very interesting to see what Willamette does against SOU next week though.  BTW, Redlands is just finishing a pretty impressive win tonight.  Rats have them down here (in Socal) next week.  Maybe I'll make the trip but then again, my wife and baby may have other ideas....  Goodnight all!
Go Cats!

Interesting game for Linfield.

*   Many new names for the Wildcats.

*  215 yards rushing, 136 passing.   When was the last time that happened?
    QB was leading rusher.   ??

*  Outgained HSU 351 yds vs. 339

*  28.5 yards per punt

*  Fumbles lost: 2    (Familiar story for the last 2 years.)    These cost Linfield the win.

Again the NWC is not impressing anyone.  Who have they beat?

SOU and WOU will be VERY tough for Linfield.

Tough loss. Sounds like the turnovers were the downfall. Hopefully your qb is ok. Linfield is one of the few teams in DIII that have depth at every position. They should be alright moving forward.
