And in 2004...

MCat,

That '97 Willamette team is the best they've ever had.  Should have won the NAIA title that year and would have if their QB, Pinkerton, didn't break his leg in the National Semifinals.  They were a hell of a squad.

Pat,

BPress is a current Willamette student so in 1999 he was probably still playing kickball at recess and collecting pokeman cards.  Try again.

Steve,

In 2004, Willamette didn't matter that year....yeah they made the playoffs but they lost to a SCIAC team in the first round.  How good of a year is that?  ;)

D O.C.

QuoteWillamette made the D-III playoffs in 1999.
And in 2004.

Truths.

In 2004 they tripped over their own shoelaces and their flys were down in the dust of Occidental.

Wildcat'64

I like the Cats chances on Saturday against the Oaks......but if they don't get their offense going and score more than 14 points the Oaks could well pull off the upset of the year at the Catdome!  The Oaks, I predict will score more than 14 on the Cats.  Remember Willamette last season....no reason the Cats should not have won that game but just got surprised as they were looking past the Bearcats.
LEAVE NO DOUBT

Bearcat Press

Yes on the kickball, no on the pokemon.

Speaking of Willamette history, I had the opportunity to sit down for a Q&A session this week with Mike Allegre, the Bearcats' longtime radio guy.  Space constraints forced my editors to cut out more than half the questions, but I'll try and post the extended version on here when I get the chance.

So 11, when was Willamette last "significant in football"?  I'm confused now?  I suppose as a Cat Fan we could say they were significant last year but that doesn't fit with your previous statement!

How about we go with the last time they won an NWC title...that's a pretty significant accomplishment.  1999.

Hey Cawcdad---how about a preview on the Oaks for us Cat Fans this week---who to look for, strengths/weaknesses, types of O/D etc.....  Whatcha got for us?   ;D

I like B-catPress. He rolls with the punches around here. Plus he's good for an injury report or two.

w11,

Why are you hating on kickball, man? It's a serious sport among the Portland hipsters:

Guh.

11, I know that, but someone said 1997 was the last time they were relevant and I was disagreeing.

I like B-Press too.  He's much better than some of the Willamette clowns that have appeared during the traditional 2-week window.  Speckman's son wasn't too bad of a poster but I know he's on Dad's staff now so he can't post anymore.  I'd bet $100 he's a major lurker though.

I take back what I said about kickball because I know Portland hipsters are 2-steps ahead of what's cool.  :)  I know that I'm auto disqualified from being cool because I like PBR draft when I get my double w/fries at the Deluxe....and I run my own fan site so that kills any chance of me being cool.

I'm still on the fence in Whitworth vs Willamette but I'm leaning towards the Bearcats due to they have been getting it done all year long.

No!  Pick against us!  We don't stand a chance! ;)

BPress,

I'm sorry man but I'm going to have to pick the Bearcats.  I know the last time when Willamette was really significant in football you were still playing kickball at recess and collecting pokeman cards so it's taken a little bit of time for me to believe they are a good team this year.
If I'm not mistaken, you played against that significant Willamette team 11, no?  1997?
Actually, it was me who indicated that the last time Willamette was "signifcant" was 1997---  I didn't say they weren't relevant.  :)  Then again, winning the NWC only to lose in the first round to another NWC team (do you get to keep the NWC title after that?) is not that significant at least in the national scheme.  But I suppose it's all a matter of perspective.....right?

Ha ha....not to mention you sell T-shirts for your own fan site.  What does that make us guys who buy the shirts and go to the site.....  Uber-not cool?

I don't know, w11. You might just be cool without even trying. PBR is Portland's unofficial hipster beer, and half the town runs their own blog. You are so close! Just trade that double burger in for some Thai food or sushi and convert your dad's old 10-speed into a fixed gear bike.

And, yes, of course Lil' Spec (brig) lurks...

Hey Dee,
  Two words

   MORE COWBELL

Oh and on Willamette, they just had a 10 year reuniun of their 98 club and all they talked about on their site and local paper was the frickin chick kicker.  I can only imagine that all of the boys that returned to town really like the idea that their idenity model doesnt have balls.

I would say that being the only team to beat the national champs that year made them significant.
