. . .Any idea why northwest schools seem to have a hard time keeping football programs going while we don't seem to see this in other parts of the country.  Cost? Lack of history? Anti-football students and/or faculty?  Linfield/PLU being TOO dominate and multiple losing seasons leading to cancelling program?  Or is my premise false to begin with?  How many other small schools have dropped their programs since say 1970?  Pat Coleman, do you have any data on that?
Speedy, it isn't just northwest schools. CA used to have a great bunch of D-II schools and they all dropped football at the same time. They were all state colleges, Chico, Sonoma, Hayward, SF State. Then we had a bunch of small D-IAA schools drop football, Santa Clara, St. Mary's, Pacific among the private and Long Beach and Fullerton among the state schools. They all cited money as the reason for droping the programs. I used to love having so many schools to choose from to see football on a Saturday afternoon.

This Morning's Dawn Patrol: Clean, inconsistent little lines rolling through here and there. Weak/mushy overall and looking best for a longboard.

Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!

Proud Papa Joe

Good morning Cat fans and everyone else. After 10 days, over 1500 miles, and 2 Cat football games we are home. It is nice to be home.

Didn't have a computer to keep up on all the posting so I have done some reading this morning. Some of it is good, most of it is bla, bla, bla, endless. Is there just alot to talk about now. Seems like some of the post are very long.

So I will keep this one short. Great games. Everybody should be at full speed for Saturday and yes it was nice to see all them "cat backs" play. Some were very fast and Some were powerful. And the QB's looked good. Nice to see them all get some time.

Go Cats

THe mention of NAIA brings up another question:  how long will the NAIA exist?  Is it dying a long, slow death?

As for WU vs. PLU - The Lutes really came out flat, and just never seemed to get in sync.  The home stands were empty too, to my untrained eye maybe 400 fans, tops.  Their biggest stretch of momentum was on a series of classic Lute trick plays. Man is it frustrating to give up yards that way.

Bearcat Press

Just got back on campus after a long drive up to Puyallup yesterday and a today at home with the family.  Easily our most complete game of the season so far.  Either PLU's pass defense is atrocious, or the Fly has literally started to "fly."

I'll most more thoughts on the game later, but before I do, I have a blanket question for any of the Wildcat posters or Willamette lurkers out there: does anyone out there have photographs of past Linfield/Willamette games - especially games in McMinnville - that they wouldn't mind the Collegian using for my special "Rivalry Preview" article this week?  My deadline is 5:00 pm tomorrow, so if someone has a picture (I promise you'll get a photo credit) that they could e-mail me before then, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please send me a PM if you've got something.

Thanks!

Early weather report is showing 62 and partly sunny.  We all know how that can change in 6 days but it could be a prefect late October day for the NWC game of the year.

Go Wildcats!

Foss

Rankings out. Appears it will be #16 vs. #23 for likely the NWC title this Saturday. The least amount of points Willamette has scored in a game this year is 31. The Bearcats league leading offense (42/game) vs. the Wildcats league leading defense (14/game) should be more than a little interesting. This should be a dandy!
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

Wildcat'64

A CLASSIC Battle is upon us.....The old adage may apply to this game...."Offenses Win Games, Defenses Win Championships"!!! Guess I'll have to pick the Wildcats this week to prevail!
LEAVE NO DOUBT

(509)Rat

The Rats rolled the loggers and i came away impressed with a few things:

Defensive front seven: played a great game.  Neutralized the logger running game and a few guys who have struggled this season (especially Hadley) stepped up and stuffed UPS.  They really tightened up down in the redzone with a couple very nice goal line stands.

O-line: Maybe it was because the UPS d-line was overmatched but this was another unit who finally lived up to the pre-season expectations.  Opened up huge holes for Anderson and Nelson and gave the two freshman time to throw.  Hopefully they'll continue to move the line of scrimmage this week against Menlo who typically has some talented D-linemen.

Freshman QBs: Jansen and Durant both played well and showed the ability to run the football.  Jansen didn't have a pick so I'd give him the nod for the game (both looked better than Peck) and he very well might be the starter next week.  Durant did have a nice TD run that was called back, and Jansen had a big 3rd down conversion on a 99 yard scoring drive.

Play Calling:  Did I see some throws that actually stretched the field on first down? And a few play action passes on second and short?  I liked that Whitworth opened up the playbook a little bit and gave the QBs a chance to get into a rhythm without having to always throw against a secondary with 5-6 DBs.

Good game by the Pirates...too bad it didn't come a week or two earlier.
