Wow, the board is imploding. Are there any grief counselors available for Spirit & Blue?

QuoteLinfield has won 5 NWC titles this decade.  Your favorite player, BE, was only on the team for 2 of those.  I don't know why your obsession with this guy continues.  I'm pretty sure that all of us linfield guys know he's not coming back.  But since you seem to bring it up time and again I'm assuming you must still be trying to convince yourself.

That's good and all but every season the Cats don't make a deep run into the playoffs half of the posters act like the sky is falling.  Winning NWC Championships is great but it didn't necessarily mean much on the national level in terms of playoff implications (see Whitworth '07).  Now the automatic bid fixes all of that nonsense.  The 2004 championship is NOT the norm for Wildcat football, yet everyone on this board expects it?  The talent on the last few Linfield teams has been nowhere near that of the early to mid 2000's, so why the high expectations every year when you claim to realize that?  You know that Whitworth is going to field a very competitive team each year (since the success during the clark and allan years) and you know that Willamette has the talent and scheme to beat you on any given week...so why has it been such a huge surprise the last three years when someone else has won the championship and Linfield has failed to make the playoffs?

Touche, WC11.  As for the issue of class, I don't care.  I just thought it was funny to see that as the topic of debate.

SJU played Whitworth the year before last and they were a very good team.  I was amused by the streaker though.  I think it's a matter of Linfield expecting to be there every year and being disappointed when they're not.  It's kind of like at SJU.  When SJU does not make it, I am surprised because they usually have the talent to at least win the conference even in "down" years.  I don't consider that to be a disrespect of the other conference team or teams who may make it during those years.  It's good when a program and its fan base have those expectations.  Hopefully, Willamette can do some damage in the playoffs this year and get its name out to the rest of the country and garner some of the type of respect that LInfield has.  In '99, it would have been interesting to see how SJU stacked up against you had PLU not won against you first.  The Linfield people have an unusual  and hyper-vigilant sort of support and respect for their program that kind of reminds me of the Packer-backers in WI.   They could have four wins and they'd complain and analyze to death but they'd still fill up the stands.  Unfortunately, I don't think that even I'd have that kind of tolerance or fortitude.  I like to give their banter back to them, too, and I know where it comes from.   While I've been an SJU fan subjected to it a few times and while SJU does not play them every year, it seems to me that their fervor is out of pride for their program rather than an insult to other teams.  SJU gets pretty much the same arguments.

On a side note, I think it speaks volumes for a program when a Brett Elliot bolts a d-1 program and decides to go there.  I am sure Allen and Carter and Russell and Ford probably could have played at higher levels, too.  The same holds true for PLU and Anthony Hicks and probably Chad Johnson (of course, he had his grandpa to play for).   It seems to me that PLU had a couple of really good receivers back then and a good running back in 2001 but I forget their names right now.  Personally, I like to see the banter because it shows pride for a program.  No harm done.

This talk of classless fans from the Linfield guys is laughable.  I'm sure some of you remember the tool with the bullhorn at the last Whitworth game...at the Pine Bowl.  He was wearing an old Letterman jacket and obviously couldn't let go of his old glory days as he was yelling at the Whitworth players and coaches.  While most of it was appropriate (just annoying) he was heard yelling obscenities through his bullhorn that could undoubtadly be heard by anyone within a 200 foot radius (meaning there were plenty of women and children exposed).  Pretty classy if you ask me.  Wondering what the reason behind it was, since WC11's assumption that these types of things stem from an inability to understand how to win could never affect the faithful of the storied Linfield Wildcats.

(509),

That's fair.  I really was embarrassed about the bullhorn deal.  I hated that happened because the folks up at Whitworth have always been class fans and welcoming.

I'm just happy that Willamette gave you the outlet to lash out at Linfield since your boys couldn't supply you with the ammo this season.  ;)

Whitworth was very gracious to us SJU when we were there a couple of years ago.    The streaker, as I've said before, was not class-less.  Rather, it was pretty funny.  I'm still surprised he did not impale himself or tear something off jumping over that fence beyond one of the end zones.

Wow, this is getting crazy. To quote my wife "remember how adults are supposed to act".
These are all great programs that everyone is posting about and everybody should calm down.
Linfield folks should be proud of past success and anticipate future development.
Every team has jerks on the sidelines. Last year we attended the Linfield Lewis and Clark blowout and I heard a constant on slot of vile (and accurate) heckling from the Linfield student section.
The Willamette kids at the end zone were taunted by an "adult" Linfield fan.
Relax ADULTS.

We can't stop now it's my turn to pipe in.

As for the fans in the end zone, no one has brought up the fact that a WU Professor was with them and did zip. When asked why he didn't do anything his response was.......I just work there  ??? Nice one teach.

As for the constant get over it Brett is no longer here..........If you don't expect to win it all every year don't show up to play.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Brett played in 82..84..or 86.

My problem is the fair weather fans, when you win they come in bus loads, have a bad year and they disappear. At Linfield I can say we follow our team through the highs and the lows. And I'll say it we are spoiled. From the Coach's to the players and fans when our team takes the field we expect to win.....every time.

Thank you, that said....big win Saturday for the Bearcats, and congrats. A few, or lots of unruly fans doesn't take away what the team did on the field. As much as the last part hurts me to say good luck the rest of the way and enjoy the ride as we can tell you ......enjoy it while you can.

Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!

Any truth to the fact that the head ref was a Willamette Grad?  ???

Just heard it from a D3.com source that will remain anonymous  ;D.

That's quite an accusation to make -  you claim it's a "fact" but do you have anything to back it up? The name of this so-called professor? Or even a description?

Unbelievable -  let's try for some clarity here, shall we?

You ask a question and phrase it as "Any truth to the fact that the head ref was a Willamette Grad?"

Facts ARE Truth - there should be no question. Posting as such in this forum without  corroboration is simply deflamatory.

So, Tuxguy - who in this list is a WU Alumni?:

Referee: Michael Batlan  •  Umpire: Paul Collard  •  Linesman: Jim Richards  •  Line judge: Rich Troyer  •  Back judge: Gerry Rasch  •  Field judge: Bob Rose  •  Side judge: T. Migchelbrink •  Scorer: Tom McFadden  •

Facts..... Truth
You Won the game...........enjoy it!

So Mike Batlan (the referee)  is a Willamette grad.  Bigger importance is Linfield's approach to "The Fly".  Almost every team that play against it plays zone - Linfield went man-to-man.  Makes no sense when WU is quicker and faster - so after beating his match up the WU player was free to run.  2nd play calling.  Linfield's 2008 offensive personnel are not suited to make up a large deficit with the play calling from the press box.  As I said 10 days ago the game would be decided on what went on upstairs - in the press box.  Smith shouldn't go but Nagel needs to be replaced - playcalling terrible, terrible, terrible.  Does Linfield have enough inside to go to Puget Sound and redeem themselves or will they toss it in.
