About 10 years ago a coach moved from South Gate H.S. to Cathedral H..S.and took 7 of the best players with him. Their senior year they went 11-0 and messed up the championship game. I knew some of the kids when they were ten.
Looks like it's time for me to drop a couple LINFIELD brochures by the good Padres. Looks like the same for Mater Dei. Coach Bruce is an old neighbor.

It would be a good thing to do, but WU has a pretty strong connection with Cathedral:  A prominent alum and ties to coaches there...

Mater Dei is a tough nut for anyone up here to crack.  If they're not going to a D-I school, they're looking for the more "name brand" colleges.

Thanks Bearcatfan,

Either the horn and pot people were told to stop
or it was Oxy falling behind by a few Td's that made them stop.
Only at a D3 football game could you have 2 seats on the 50 yard line (2 rows behind bluenote) and have an obstructed view!
I love D3 Football!!!

...the lady with the big pot and the big spoon kept jumping up and clanging the dang thing in my ear! Jeez...it's still ringing!!! I was thinking it was dinner time for the team or something. Then some weirdy would sound off that blow horn and I kept thinking the quarter was over! That's a crazy bunch.... those CaLEEfornians.  :P

It's my understanding that the home team's security staff is responsible for removing artificial noise makers. Sounds like WU wasn't paying attention much like Hardin- Simmons and their oil drums. I've been in the stands when some parent is playing "more cowbell" , it's very annoying. California (the granola state)...land of fruits and nuts! ;)
Go Cats! Make it 62 in '17!

Nice venue, hospitable fans, and a great game.  Congratulations Bearcats and good luck.  Here are some images from the game http://gallery.me.com/aybates#100115.  From an Oxy Fan's perspective of course.

Especially Wu Woo running in front of the helpless OXY sidelines. DIII players don't pull a Woody I guess (Ohio State, you perverts).

A comment on the boards about WU big linemen being from California (take that OXY) caused me to unscientifically look at their roster;

seven (7) JC transfers

seven (7) major college transfers (do you consider Whitworth major?)

forty (40) California state players (counting some of the above again)

Is that serious recruiting or does everybody on the team want to go to law school?
If you notice, the majority of the CA kids are from Central CA. Speckaman grew up in the bay area and coached for a number of years at Merced H.S. winning several section championships. Merced was in the same league as the school where I Teach.  He still makes regular visits to the area and uses his strong connections with the H.S. coaching community here.

I noticed Juan Alvarado is from Franklin of Stockton. Franklin had some incredible teams. But last year it was discovered that the coach had recruited and paid for kids to come from Samoa to play at Franklin. The school received some severe sanctions. At first they were not going to be allowed to even field a team this year, but that was rescinded. Interestingly, a number of the coaches and players wound up at a Christian school in town and they now are being investigated. I'll bet Juan is glad to away from that mess and doing well with the Bearcats.

In these photos some of the Willamette fans have those thunderstix. While not as obnoxious as a kettle or an airhorn, if you happen to be unfortunate enough to be right in front of them, they are annoying as hell.

Something is amiss there, comrade. The coach is a LINFIELD graduate I'm informed.

Oh, I so agree!  I hate thunderstix!  Somebody always gives them to little kids who decide to have fights with them & bonk unsuspecting people in the head!!

The media guide lists him as playing for the 'Cats in 1984.

It's odd that spectators could take them into the game. My wife couldn't even take an empty travel mug into the Linfield game a few weeks ago.

Linfield has experience in crowd control.  Crowds at football games are sort of new to WU! ;)  I think the thunderstix are given to people in the Bearcat Club -- not sure.  So, they're already in the game!
