I don't know where a school the size of Menlo gets the money to hand out the number of scholarships required for NCAA Division II membership.

Thinking out loud here...what is the chance that if Pacific brings back football that the NWC dissolves the football only membership with Menlo?  Is Menlo looking for a back-up plan (DII-GNAC) in case their program is sent back to the ranks of DIII Indy status?

Honestly, I don't think that would be very smart of the NWC. Even if Pacific brings football back, scheduling enough D-3's will still be a challenge for some teams - and L&C is far from stable.

100% agree but I'm concerned why Menlo would even explore DII options.  I talked a little about it on my blog but the DII conference that Menlo would have to join for all non-football sports (Pacific West Conference) is spread all over the western states and has 4 teams in Hawaii.  Talk about an increase to the athletic budget if the moved up.  Crazy.

L&C going away is very scary.  If they continued to get hurdles* placed in front of them by their admissions department/administration I don't know how they make it.

cawcdad,  two schools from Menlo's (other sports) NAIA conference are heading up to DII? How many schools does that leave?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. Looks like 10 teams right now, so there would be 8.

Let's hope all they have is huddles placed in front of them.   ;D

Hi-Yo!  +1 D O.C.  I've been in a football frenzy overload of news the past couple of weeks.  Huddle up!

You'll let us know as soon as you hear something about Pacific, I trust? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them, and for L&C to have a good recruiting year.

Pacific's board of trustees is expected to give the final thumbs-up/thumbs-down on football at its spring meeting, which I believe is in April.

All of the discussions I've sat in on indicate to me that the NWC would keep Menlo as an affilliate member in football, even if the heavens opened and GFU and Whitman joined Pacific in bringing back football.  The NWC needs Menlo to survive (and thrive) as a DIII program, as we do any DIII programs on the west coast.  Losing Colorado College hurts.

Thanks Steve for the update and inside info!  I'm 100% with you on keeping Menlo as part of the NWC for the long haul.  I think it would take more than an act of God to bring football back at Whitman.  Without a doubt Whitman has the funds to do what they want but I see Reed College having football before Whitman.  :)

An 8th football member would be great but how about a 9th?  Can anybody put in a call to Marv out at College of Idaho to see if they are going to be leaving the NAIA anytime soon?

It would probably be 2011 before Pacific had football even if they approve it in the next couple months.

I knew absolutely nothing about football before I came to Whitman and to my surprise, I can now proudly call myself a linebacker! As Whitman doesn't have a varsity football team, everyone comes out for the intramural football championships and roots on their friends in this high-energy, flag-pulling extravaganza. My all female team takes it very seriously - with our own uniforms, cheers, pre-game traditions, and even a secret practice location. Football season is definitely the highlight of my year."

TDT,

I'm sorry that we're not talking about Hamms, Ice Fishing, or about you being the Mayor of your local NAMBLA chapter.  Keep filling up JR's tailgate tip cup and we'll keep talking about football.

D O.C.

Since we cannot even talk spring football yet....what was the reason (s) Colorado College did not look West for their conference affiliation?

Did TDT crawl out from a crack in the ice?  I saw where the Brewac board was wondering where he was.

In the 1980's, before CLU and Menlo were available, each SCIAC team played one SCIAC team twice to fill out the nine game schedule.  Each game counted as a half game in the standings.  That is one reason the SCIAC was one of the first leagues to opt for the tie breaking system now used by the NCAA for all games. It was  optional for each league at that time.  Usually these games were split with a win for each.

I hope that the economics don't make the SCIAC or NWC go back to this.

Reed actually has a rugby team, but after Willamette beat them 60-7 earlier this year in Salem, they cancelled their second game against us.  Whoops. ::)

If (Albertson's) College of Idaho ever rejoins the NWC, I might just have to take a trip to Caldwell.  My best friend was recruited there to fence - despite the fact he'd never fenced before in his life.
