I have a stupid question for you. What is the origin on your CATDOME tag at the bottom? I just assumed ya'll had a domed stadium but have discovered you don't. Just curious in case UMHB wins and we have to travel to Linfield.

Not a stupid question.  "Catdome" has been around for a long time and I really don't know when or who started it.  It means different things to different people/players.

When I first heard the term "Catdome" as a player in 1994 I thought it referred to the fact that teams that do play indoors (domes) have an advantage of playing inside all the time and that Linfield's Maxwell Field was viewed as an advantage because Linfield was traditionally a strong team in the late season mud and wet weather.  The mud and rain was just as much as an edge for Linfield as playing inside is for indoor teams.

However, as I was around the program longer I found that "Catdome" is said by folks to express a state of mind.  Linfield players, coaches, and fans truly believe in how the program approaches and plays the game and the unique bond Linfield people young and old have to the program.  The history and success of the program is the proof that "our" way works for us and the term "Catdome" is just a short hand way of saying all of that with one word.

Very well said Wildcat11....I was thinking the same thing!   :D

Leave it to criswyly to still have the word plague in his vocabulary.   :-*

Are you taking your Emergen-C and Airborne over there?

Business and life has kept me away from the boards the last month but I'm happy to be back.  Cats have a great test starting this weekend.  Let's keep an unblemished record with our Californian foe this weekend.  Go Cats!

It's been quite disappointing to hear about the low turnout to the CatDome.  If I was within a 1,000 miles I'd make it to at least a game or two.

My question to the posters out there is how can Linfield increase attendance at the games?

I don't recall ever seeing much publicity for the games around the McMinnville area.  I always wished we were more involved with the McMinnville community; i.e. visiting grade schools and the like.  Is there time for that?  Do other D3 schools do anything like that?

Back in the day, when Linfield was NAIA, the playoffs were all based on bidding to host.  Linfield and PLU must have known how to do a good job of bidding, or they knew they could sell out and make the NAIA a lot of money.  If it comes down to a bidding war this year the only thing Linfield has against it is a smallish stadium.

For a number of years leading up to 1981, the host team won all three rounds including the National Championship.  In an effort to eliminate the problem of buying home field advantage, the NAIA declared in '81 that a school could only host 2 games in the playoffs (only 8 teams so 3 rounds).  We were undefeated and ranked #1.  The team was, IMO, better overall then the 1980 National Champs.  Frosty and the administration made a tactical decision to pass on the first round "bid" and we were sent to William Jewell, the #2 team in the country for the first round, where we lost a heartbreaker of a game.  What we all missed was what happened when both teams in the National Championship had been host institutions for the first two rounds?  THe NAIA dropped that rule.  And in '83 we hosted all 3 games including the Championship in the newly built Tacoma Dome.  I believe the cost of the dome was underwritten entirely by a benefactor and he was allowed to advertise it as the Shakey's Bowl.  He owned pizza franchises in the area.  Unfortunatley we lost the only Bowl Game I played in.  If the NCAA is going to a straight "bid" system then all schools we be hared pressed to compete with St. Johns I would think.

A few observations:

Nice article by the Wildcat mom.

Toilolo is an awesome name. It just rolls off the tongue.

Back in the 80s when the schools had to bid on playoff games, I believe they had to guarantee the NAIA a certain amount of money. From what I remember, local business people in town backed Linfield up on that at least once, and said they'd chip in if enough people didn't show up for the game. Of course, attendance was never a problem.

PPJ, I didn't know that the RV park was so upscale. Sheesh!

Welcome back FarAwayCat and Ghost of Brig. The weather will probably be crappy, Brig, but come anyway!

Let's go, Wildcats!

DO.C.
Actually, I'm in Omaha until February...then return to Outer Mongolia....We do have a problem with the air over here during the winter.  400,000 people trying to stay warm in subzero temps, burning wood and coal in one small area...Maybe that's what's wrong with me. ;D

Bobo...the point is.....you guys won that game in the 2005 playoffs...but you weren't necessarily the best team...You were very fortunate to win.  I just like to keep bringing that up to remind everyone....cause this board isn't just about what's happening now.  Life has always been about the past, present and future.

Before the playoffs start there is usually a feature that d3football.com puts out...it outlines all the teams in the playoffs...their style of play, etc. ....has this come out yet? I looked for it but didn't see it listed anywhere. Anybody know anything?
