Embrace the present. :)

BTW, I see where Speckman is a finalist for the Portland State job.  The funniest part is see so many posters say they don't want him because he's only 2-9 vs. Linfield.

+K for digging that out. :D  As I think every Wildcat knows, winning games at Maxwell is special - which is why we'll remember that win for a loooooong time.

I was out celebrating my birthday with the family on Saturday, so I didn't see the Linfield/UMHB result until after midnight.  All I can say is :o.

Again, for emphasis: :o

Suddenly I feel a lot better about pushing the Wildcats to the brink back in October.  Since I haven't come out and said it before, it's now official: I'm on the Linfield bandwagon.  I don't have a car, but are there any Wildcats who'll be passing through Salem this Saturday on their way to and from McMinnville?  Bluenote and Tuxguy were extremely gracious in coming down to McCulloch for last years games, and I'd like to repay the favor.  PM me if you can find the compassion to give a ride to a Bearcat.

That's a great little piece by Carla Axtman.  I'll watch the Civil War on Thursday because it's going to be a great game and because it's phenomenal for the state of Oregon.  But, as Carla said (with a slight modification), my heart belongs to the Bearcats.

Update on Speckman: As far as I can tell, he's scheduled to be interviewed by PSU today.  The Collegian isn't printing this week, but the sports editor of the Vanguard at PSU has promised to keep me posted.  Whatever I hear will come straight here.  My gut tells me that Speck won't leave - the man has the Bearcat claw tattooed on his ankle after all - but I won't feel settled until the process is finished.

11 - maybe you know this, but am I wrong in thinking that Speck has more wins against Linfield than any other current NWC coach?  Or does Tully?

BTW, nice little article but you guys may want to chime in the posting section where a couple of posters are bashing someone being more interested in Linfield over the Civil War.

Most people who "big-time" college football rubes have never seen a DIII game, so they have no basis for comparison. DIII fans can always place things in a more accurate context because it's hard to find anyone who hasn't seen a "big-time" college football game.

Agreed, I had never attended a non D1 game until 2000, and the in game experience for me is actually superior. Fewer interruptions, less commercialism, and the people generally better. Could care less about the difference in level of competition.  I attended a Big 10 game this season, and it's just like the NFL. I'm a big pro football fan, but it's discouraging to see D1 sharing the same experience.
Another advantage the other levels of college football offer, is the old fashioned method of actually settling a champion on the field. I never played the game, but it would drive me crazy as a player to have a perfect season like TCU and Boise State, and have the chance for a national title denied by some idiotic formula.

Steel Curtain:
I agree with what your saying and I would also like to add the following. Back in the day our son was a member of the team, my wife and I were watching pregame warmups when Coach Locey came up to us and addressed us by name, talked to us about how well our son was playing, and asked how were doing. We got the same treatment from Coach Hire, Coach Powell, and the rest of the Linfield coaching staff. This type of incident happened every time we were at the Catdome and at the away games. We could also visit with our son on the Friday night before the games we attended (We were flying to Oregon from Arizona).

I talked to the parents of a high school player my son played with who received a scholarship to play at Stanford. We compared notes; His son was not allowed to visit with him prior to the games (they could meet for a few minutes in the hotel lobby the team was staying at), the coaches didn't know who he was or took any interest in how they were doing, and the coaches controlled his son's travel plans. He was going to go to Mexico one year for spring break and he was told he couldn't go. The coaching staff wanted him in the weight room and working out. The money his parents spent for the travel arrangements was lost. The personal touch we got from the coaches, staff, and the players made us fall in love with Linfield College.

B-Press,

Speckman actually has 3 (1999, 07 and 08) and Tully has 2.  It seems that Speckman has been flirting with other jobs for years.  If PSU offers him the job I don't see how he turns it down....

Welcome to the Linfield bandwagon.  We have plenty of room on the wagon for all wanting to back the 'Cats.

The Web broadcast this weekend was phenomenal!  Better than some small countries coverage of their own national sports team ( I know because I live in one).  It was the first webcast that I was able to watch without having any streaming problems.  The Dave and Ty show is also top class.  Ty adds a lot of unique perspective having just played in the program and being still involved with the program and it's players.  The only small problem was the volume of the audio attached to the webcast.  i had to plug in earphones and squeeze them to my head for 3 unbelievable hours.  What a game.  Glad I was able to partake!

All that being said, is it official that it will be webcast this weekend as well?

Linfield has traditionally have tough games with the MIAC schools they've faced and this should be no different.  UST is going to be another huge challenge.
I agree

I hate to ask, but maybe it can add some fire to our boys.  What is Linfields record with the MIAC?

How is the museum going?  I might have something for you...on loan...as the big museums do it.

I think our record is 1 win against Concordia Moorehead and 3 losses against the mighty Johns.
Don't forget your booties cause it's cold out there!

Just wanted to let everyone on the NWC board know about the DIII Playoffs Pool I'm starting this week. Details are in this post in the General Football forum.

I enjoyed the webcast as well, the only minor thing I didn't like was the occasional cutting to different cameras during a play. The announcers did a good job, interesting to hear Ty's analysis of quarterback play especially. Hopefully we can catch another installment this Saturday.

I think another word you'd have to associate with the program is class. It's a trait which has been the signature of Linfield Football, it's impossible not to root for the quality people who do things the right way. I'm a fan of the program, and never even attended the school, or knew anyone associated with Linfield College before 2000. You mentioned Jay Locey, I recall him taking the team to visit a children's hospital the week of the 2004 Stagg Bowl, that speaks volumes about some of the lessens players learn going through the program which apply to life after their playing career ends.
Obviously, there are a ton of great, high character people at D1 schools, but the incredible influence of money causes the inevitable recruitment of a few students who are majoring in football, and should not be at a college campus. Case in point, a Big 10 school had a football banquet recently, and later that evening, about 15 of those players donned ski masks and beat up some other students. But the outcry in the community has been muted, because many fans of this school want a BCS bowl bid at all costs. Another thing I've noticed starting this year, TV announcers calling D1 schools "franchises", which reflects the influence of money.

Good luck to Linfield this next weekend.  I sure wish you guys were coming to St. John's for another round of fun.  It's good to see Linfield back in the thick of things after a couple of non-Linfield-like years.  St. Thomas is a good team with pretty decent running and passing games so don't take them lightly.   Keep up the good and rabid smack.  The CatDome is a real fun place to watch a football game.

Wow, that's as many as Gagliardi ... but the percentage is a bit different. :)

I'd love to see that game but if the Cats prevail and continue on, I will be there in Salem.

Meanwhile, FWIW, a little ditty from USTd (and apologies if this has been posted previously).

Back from the Land of no computers (my Mom's apt!), I am so thrilled to see that Linfield came through so well this past Saturday!!  Much good luck for the following game.  Will it be in Linfield?  Against whom?  I feel so out of it as I usually know more details than I seem to know this go-round.

ALL THE BEST TO THE RED AND PURPLE!!
Hope to see a bunch of you'all soon in Salem, V-I-R-G-I-N-I-A!!
