As the clock wound down, a group of 30 Fox students who'd come down from Newberg started chanting "God still loves you!" at us.  I don't think students from PLU would do that (though I could be wrong), so that's where I see the difference.

I can remember being a student at GFU hoops games and our Linfield section breaking out the old hockey clap/chant of "Pass your curfew" at the Fox student body.  Guess that's part of the reason why they still call us "Sin-field"

I remember being in the face of a Willamette player exchanging a slight push and a few words just after the whistle blew.  Then he said something like: "Hey, you're not displaying a very Christian attitude...Frosty will be sad."  I was kinda 'heated' at the time - but looking back I admit that was very, very funny.  Smart-a$$ed Bearcat clearly 'won' our 'conversation' with those lines...my earlier lines weren't anywhere near that witty or creative.

I will not go too far over into Theology or I'll have to take this to another board....

When those coco and GHC guys were wearing their WILDCAT freshman beanies there was mandatory chapel requirement (or no transcript at graduation), females in at 10PM, males out all night if they chose, no beer (let alone alcohol) or removal from school, no touching at the one dance a year (on campus), no freshman allowed to have a car.
I, of course, got on the right committees and lightened it up.

Oh, and George Fox was that quacky Quaker school in the town that had the drive-in movie theater (but you still had to get her in by 1AM on Fri-Sat)     ;)

Yeah - being a Pacific Lutheran grad myself - that stuck me as odd when I first read it.  So I Googled the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities to learn a little more.  I won't try to re-hash it all here - but there was quite a bit about their "association of intentionally Christian" schools and their shared mission to "advance the cause of Christ-centered higher education and to help our institutions transform lives by faithfully relating scholarship and service to biblical truth."

While PLU is still very much affilated with the Lutheran Church (and has chapel services, campus pasters, etc.), I think the education provided is more mainstream and secular.  My professors certainly didn't teach the 'biblical truth' in class like some at these schools might.  There are just over a hundred member schools (not on the West Coast, but overall).  So clearly there are a lot more schools with 'Christian' affilations that aren't a part of this group.  I only saw two in IA, for example, Northwestern and Dordt. I think Bethel was the only MIAC school.

There's also a difference in student life at George Fox.  My girlfriend transferred to Willamette from GFU our sophomore year.  Chapel services aren't optional - they're mandatory.  As in, you have to swipe your student ID card upon entering the auditorium/chapel and there are consequences if you don't attend enough times.  Students also sign a "values contract" upon admission (no alcohol, etc.), and there are other restrictions as well: no coed dorms, no person of the opposite sex allowed in your room with the door closed, no men allowed in the women's dorms (and vice versa) after 10:00 p.m. ... you get the idea.

This is all in addition to d-train's accurate point about education.

I remember a basketball game last year when GFU beat Willamette in Salem - an unexpected loss to be sure, and us students were all kind of stunned.  As the clock wound down, a group of 30 Fox students who'd come down from Newberg started chanting "God still loves you!" at us.  I don't think students from PLU would do that (though I could be wrong), so that's where I see the difference.

I don't remember the chapel at PLU, course I don't recall the library either  ;D

1992 Linfield versus 2009 Linfield, who wins?

Say we had a time machine and transported the 2009 Wildcats back to 1992 to play the NAIA finalist Wildcats. Each squad has a full week of preparation, including video help, what would be the result? If we agree players gradually improve in strength and speed over the years, is that also true regarding strategy? If the schemes today are considered a little more complex, does that give the 2009 squad another slight edge?

Looking at this matchup, the 1992 Wildcats have by far, the best rushing offense in Linfield history, amassing 3739 yards. But that team could also throw, and their total offense that year still ranks among the top five in school history. How would the 2009 Linfield defense adjust facing an offense different from what they saw in recent years?

Of course, the 1992 Linfield defense would be challenged in facing the strong 2009 Wildcat offense. Don't have the numbers handy, but I think the passing numbers are second only to the 2004-05 teams. We also know they could run effectively, too. Would the '92 Linfield defense be able to slow down the '09 Linfield offense, or would they have problems facing a different scheme they didn't see back in 1992?

So there you have it. Would the 1992 Wildcats be able to use ball control to shorten the game and pressure the 2009 Wildcats enough to pull out the win? Or is the difference in players today, combined with differences in schemes, be too much for the 1992 Wildcats to overcome?

What do former Wildcat players think?

Steel,

I have no bloody idea.  I wasn't around Linfield in 1992 but I do know that team was chalk full of incredible talent on both of offensive and defensive side and this 2009 squad was pretty special too.  Maybe Coach Smith would be the best person to ask since he was a starting Corner on that 1992 team.  :)

Right you are sir!

*In 1954, Walt Disney signed Parker to play the title role in Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. Davy Crockett was a tremendous hit with children, and led to a merchandising frenzy for coonskin caps and all things Crockett. In 1964 Parker began filming his network television series, Daniel Boone. During six years as one of the highest rated shows of its time, Parker not only starred in the series but co-produced it and directed five of its most popular episodes. Parker continued to star in numerous box office hits for Disney, Paramount and Warner Brothers' Studios, while laying the foundation for his second career as real estate developer.

I do remember watching that show as a kid, along with Gilligan's Island,  F-Troop,  and Star Trek among others. Those were the days when parents didn't have to worry about what their child was watching on TV. When you'd wake up super early the indian test pattern was on the black and white TV. Those were good times, glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s as opposed to today.

1992 Linfield versus 2009 Linfield, who wins?

2009 team wins.   1992 was a very good team, but beatable.   They could not adjust  to Findlay's option run and pass attack.    They were vulnerable to Findlay's B grade passing game.    Last, Findlay's defense completely stopped LC's option offense.

2009 team almost beat WWW on their home field.    Findlay would have been hit by 28+ points from our 2009 passing attack.    2009 team ranks up there with the 2002-2005 powerhouses.    A very strong team, indeed!
