Pacific has really, really impressive numbers for a first-year program.  By my count, 145 puts them as the second-largest program in the conference - after Linfield but ahead of Willamette.

That's really a great sign.  Good for them.  However, I'll be curious to know what that number is at the end of the season.  They'll be a decent program in short order.

Wow...commentor 'Lori' is not happy with Pacific bringing back football....She lists out 18....yes 18 points about why football isn't a hot idea at Pacific.

I think "Lori" is definitely a member of the Pacific faculty who owns 20 cats, and hasn't been out on a date since 1973. Her 18 points are rubbish, especially this one "If a student comes for academics, how athletic can they really be?" You've gotta be kidding me! Talk about stereotypes, she's implying college athletes can't be smart. That's one of the most asinine comments I've ever heard.

Honestly, "Lori" sounds like any number of people that can be found at any liberal arts school, even one that has football.  I'm thinking in particular of the legendary quote wildcat11 found in the L&C student newspaper last season, but I definitely knew a few at Willamette and I'm sure I could find a few at any other NWC school.

On another note entirely, it looks like College of Idaho really, really wants to join the NWC - with or without adding football.

Edit to add:  Here's another C of I related story that also mentions a pair of Portland-area NAIA schools wanting to join the NWC.

I can only assume they mean Warner Pacific and Concordia, neither of which have football.  But if the NAIA Cascade Conference breaks up, could that be the push SOU needs to go D-II?

That is great that Pacific has so many students out for football. A better read will be who is left after the first few weeks. This represents a very high percentage of student participation. Add in the band, cheer squads, student trainers and all the other support staff,  such as concessions etc, it is unbelievable. Especially as a percentage of the entire student body.

>D3 is partly all about participation, and Pacific will have it.

>The author of the articles needs to look at the cost per participant and not the total cost. She will see that the cost per participant is in line with other sports.

>Football brings in larger crowds, both student and non- student, than any other sport. It creates an atmosphere not attaiined by any other sport.

>Alumni, and town's people tend to financially support football more than any other sport.

I am sure others can add to this list, but I feel the author of the article lacks in knowledge of the whole picture.

It was tough reading the lady's ramblings. But if she is going to comment on the academics that draw student to Pacific, she should set a better example of basic English and proof reading. This may seem picky, but it did bother me. I get all over my 9th grade science students about this all the time.

Judging from that first article, C of I has a decent case if the NWC is truly interested in further expansion. Since the Coyotes have brought up the issue of football themselves in recent years, joining the NWC can't hurt the momentum for bringing back their program. In the KBOI article the issue of travel distance is raised, but Caldwell, Idaho is closer than Menlo. Just out of curiosity, I checked, and the McMinnville to C of I bus trip would take roughly 50 minutes longer than Mac to Whitworth.

I don't know about any of you, but making out under the football beachers was about as romantic as it got for a high school student from my generation!!  ;)  ;)

Also, +k to cawcdad for showing off the results of a quality D-III education!

Thanks to Lori for today's chuckle.

I enjoyed her comment that football giving the school a shot in the arm means that the players use steroids. Yeah, that's code.

And how can she say football isn't romantic? Players get to slap each other on the butt and hold hands in the huddle.

She reminds me of the person who was interviewed in an article last year who said that football players would ruin the genteel atmosphere of the Pacific campus, slobbering Neanderthals that they are.
