Did Boehme change numbers?

Naw...pretty typical for guys to have practice jerseys with different number than their game jerseys....no reason for it...most guys just grab whatever top they find.

Willamette actually puts names on guys' practice jerseys, though not on their game jerseys.

A nice little subtle change on the 'Cats jerseys this year is Linfield will finally be rocking the NCAA patch.  It looks pretty good.  You can thank the 'Cats top shelf equipment mgr, Mack, for the upgrade.

One of the aspects of the Linfield jerseys I wish other teams would adopt, is the size of the school name above the number. It's actually big enough to read easily, unlike the tiny lettering other schools use. Thinking of other college programs across the board, there are very few schools which use this larger style of lettering - Texas comes to mind in D1, and Montana in 1AA. Regardless of classification, I don't know why more schools don't follow Linfield's example. Could be mistaken, but I think Linfield started doing this in the early 1970s. I notice Mount Union has "Raiders" in large lettering on their jerseys, just like their helmets. Obviously, some school names are too large and can't be abbreviated for this to work for everyone.

The obvious answer to why other colleges don't block script their name above the jersey number and large enough to actually read is that they feel it doesn't look good or it's not part of their traditional style that many schools utilize -- considering the few number of colleges that do it would seem to indicate that, IMHO. Not to show disrespect to the Linfield uni lettering, but how many people outside the west, except those with a D3 interest, have actually seen a Linfield uni to use it as an example? I mean, they don't get the national exposure, being a small D3 school in the pacific northwest.  Personally, I don't care for the look.

I understand where you're coming from about tradition, but Texas has made the transition with ease. If the Longhorns could pull it off, why not Penn State or some other team without a school name or nickname on their helmet? Teams like Michigan State and Texas Tech still have their names on the front of jerseys, but reduced the size. Actually, the fact Linfield is a smaller school without national coverage is a good reason why getting the name out there is even more important, both locally and nationally. We have to remember game action video and photos are available on the internet, so anything which helps identify the smaller school can't hurt. For example, I had someone here in the midwest unaware of St. Johns, view a play from the 2002 playoff game versus Linfield. This person could see who Linfield was only because of the jersey lettering. They had no clue about the classification, but at least they had a name to work with. As for St. Johns, the remark I heard was that "it looks like they're playing Stanford".

Burnt orange uni's? I'm not sure Texas has pulled it off. Burnt Orange has got to be one of the ugliest colors there are, except in Texas dirt and sunsets  ;), but not in football jerseys. To me those things are uglier than sin. The logo is cool, but that's about it.
To me the best are Alabama or Penn State. The best uniforms are the uniforms that have had little to no change over the years. Penn State's classic blue and white uniforms, home or away, are what a college football team should look like. There isn't a football fan in America who couldn't instantly recognize it. Same goes for Michigan because of the helmet. Delaware look similar, but lose because of the colors. Simplicity wins out over the Nike look that has given the same uniforms to a bunch of teams, just different color schemes. That's why they have to put the school or nickname on the jersey.

Personally, I don't like it when I don't know if that is USC or Minnesota playing for a moment.

For those interested, college football in Oregon officially kicked off yesterday with Southern Oregon @ Eastern Oregon.  SOU trailed 30-14 with six minutes left but scored 20 points in the final five minutes to win 34-30.  SOU visits both Willamette and Mary Hardin-Baylor this season.
